Crazy for wanting 2.5 TRD Pro over 3 TRD Pro?

I bought a 2000 and then a 2012 new. The 2012 is such a good truck I still have it going, but selling my hunt ranch and it is very beat up.

I do like the new Tundra, but I can't get over I still like the 2nd gens more. I like the look better and after sitting in a 3, the 2 just seems more roomy/comfortable.

I know users will love the 2, love the 3, or love both and it is personal tastes. Maybe I should just look for a 2018-2021 good condition 2.5 at $40-50k and then see what happens with the 3 coming years.

Not really following what your actual question is.

But yes, folks tend to either be more of a fan of the new 3rd gen truck or the previous V8 version. Really depends what you want to do and how long you want the truck. Drive both, and buy the one you like.

 

Another thread that is about to take off….HA! I think you may of answered your own question. Pretty much everyone that owns a 2nd Gen is going to tell you stay put, and anyone that owns a 3rd Gen is going to tell you how much they love their trucks. I will never knock any Tundras cause I love them all. Your going to spend an extra $20-$30 K more for a new Tundra Pro compared to a used 20 or 21. If your cool with buying a truck that’s pretty much the same as your 2012 then it’s a no brainer. You really should drive both because they are so different in so many ways

 

Get yourself a 2.5 Pro and a supercharger and experience true happiness.

 

2.5 gen supercharged here, and absolutely love it ... I do like the new ones however but would never get one! Not a huge fan of turbos or v6's and I love having the last 3 v8's from Toyota ....def not hating on the new tundra though it is a very nice truck but just not for me

When did you buy that? How did you find a 3 year old truck with only a 100 miles on it? I think I drove 100 miles today alone. Ha

 

Did you do the TRD Supercharger through your dealer or was there a factory 2.5 Supercharged like the 1.0 had?

 

Just pure luck but had to do some research and social engineering Got it November and I now have like 3600 miles on it...

The 2/2.5 gens have a drivetrain that may be dated, but it is proven. The Gen 3's have not had time to show what kind of real reliability they are capable of. I would definitely go with a 2.5 gen. I'm one who drives it until the wheels fall off. If you get a different vehicle every 3-5 years, it really doesn't matter. But from you description I don't think you do that.

 

No not through the dealer, not sure and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the last year for dealers doing the TRD blower was 2015 the one I have is right from magnuson but I do no there are some dealers that will install it for you I just would never let the dealers around here do it lol

 

Quite the contrary, I think it shows that you're of sound mind.

I loved my 1st gen, '00 SR5 w/TRD OR Pkg 4X4 w/4.7 and upgraded to the same model & trim in a '19 CPO specifically because I wanted the 5.7 V8 and I personally don't care for the looks of the 3rd gens.

They look a little better lifted w/37's but what doesn't?

 

I bought a 2021 instead of waiting for the 3rd gen because it is has all the characteristics of my favorite Toyotas: old school, bulletproof, less efficient, go anywhere, take any abuse, dependable for 10+ years.

Is it slower than the 3rd gen? A bit. But definitely not with a SC.
Is it less efficient? Yes, but not by as much as we were all expecting before the 3rd gen debuted.
Does it need to rev higher to make it's power? Yes, that's what a naturally aspirated v8 is meant to do.

Does the 3rd gen tow more effortlessly? No, it has a smaller engine under a far higher level of stress. It is expending a great deal more effort. It feels less stressed because it makes its power at lower RPMs, but it will lose the longevity battle to the 5.7 every time.

As someone on here said (I think it was @joonbug), you can't mod for reliability. Start with the most dependable platform and customize it however you want.

I kept my 2001 for 10 years after I got the 2012. I think my father in-law is still using the 2001 to push cattle into pens.

I hate the look of the 3gen and also the turbo engine. Trucks deserve natural aspiration and that’s what I buy. Pretty obvious that soon we will have to buy turbo so I Hunted for a while and found a clean low mileage 21. Don’t plan to buy another truck for a long time The 5.7 may be dated but it’s reliable

There is one major thing I look for in a vehicle and that is the reason I drive what I drive = reliability.

The meme is still correct, as a higher displacement boosted engine operating at the same pressure ratio as a smaller displacement boosted engine will still make more power.

I was more going on the comparison of people using that phrase for a NA V8 vs. boosted V6. But we could keep building on this, going as small as a rotary with a huge turbo.

 

The 3rd gens do look kinda doofy stock but with some tires and a few appearance mods I would say they look better than a 2.5.

Also, if you tow, I would personally pick the 3rd gen unless you plan to supercharge a 2.5 gen. The turbo V6's just pull so strong down low that it makes it much more enjoyable.
