Another day, another issue. 2024 really needs to be gone by now. Just NOT my car year....

Was at friend's house on Sunday for kid's birthday party, an hour after arrival I went out to move the truck to the driveway (was parked on the curb) to get out of the traffic way (road is wide enough but a lot of traffic, since one car only on the driveway, why not?) and the truck would not start.
Insert key, turn over, one click, you can hear the electricity current but no dice. Had insurance emergency roadside assistance come and jump the car (I thought it was a battery since it was reading 11.2V) but no dice. Had a friend come out with his Taco and tried various things, nothing. Had to leave the truck and have it towed back to the dealership near me, and by end of Monday (yesterday) they said it was a bad starter (kinda in line with what my Taco fiend and I discussed) but never seen/heard a starter crapped itself at less than 3 years, under 34K miles.

Anyway, they found out that I had extended warranty (surprise, I didn't remember at all) and this will be covered under the extended warranty. My question is, since my car is less than 3 years old (2021 Tundra, bought 07/02/2021 and under 36,000 miles, currently under 34,000 miles) wouldn't this fall under the original factory warranty? I tried the Toyota Owner's site but it was not very useful. I am stuck at work today and phone calls will be very limited and short, but I plan to ask if this should have been covered under the original 36M/36K? Just so that I don't get scammed out by the dealer using my extended warranty (which I don't know if I have a deductible, but sounds like not)

    Too many, but not enough....
Whats the difference how they choose to cover it as long as they do?

Deductible. I am not even aware I have extended warranty, and if it does have a deductible on it.
If there is a deductible, I am liable to pay that first vs if this falls under the original 36M/36K warranty then I should be paying $0 out of pocket.

I dont think I have ever heard of a deductible on an extended warranty that is sold from toyota. Where are you seeing deductible?

    I have no idea.... :anonymous:
Like I said, I didn't even know I signed for an extended warranty.....

I guess I can rest easy in this case then.
Time to find out what kinda extended warranty I signed for....

Did you buy the truck brand new or was it used? Sometimes used cars come with the extended warranty.

Yes - it should be covered under the factory warranty.

I bought it new. I guess I signed without reading too much into it.
I was just reading to see if there is an early payment penalty, most times there isn't but don't want to be in a bind when I do pay it off early or switch the finance to a CU for lower rates.

Maybe the dealer is trying to do something extremely rare. Fleece the customer. Telling you it's covered under an extended warranty (with deductible) and turn in the repair to Toyota for full warranty payment.

They also may be able to get parts and labor using the extended instead of flat-rate from Toyota.

You might consider reading documents thoroughly and make sure you understand them completely before signing and entering into a contract.

    Here's a good laugh:
Just got off the phone with the service advisor (I am at work and getting off by 4PM, need to drop wife's car for her to take the kids to other activities, so I haven't seen the guy in person)
He said master tech said I had an aftermarket AMP installed and the fuse was drawing 100W, thus, killing the fuse and starter as well.
But, a. I don't have aftermarket amp, I wish, but nope. and b. what kind of fuse would allow up to 100W?
The only variable I know is the GM diode that I installed for the AGM battery. They are insisting that I take it out and replace before releasing the truck to me.

None of the above make any sense, except somehow/someway I blew the GM diode without knowing how and it in turn killed the starter..... fun times.

2nd update, it was a 100 "amp" fuse that snapped..... or by the picture, the casing snapped....
what on earth is this fuse doing?

Where is that fuse at? That's like a 1950 fuse. More details please.

^ same. I highly doubt that fuse was in a stock truck.

Look, I ain't calling BS but they didn't tell you where it was located at? That doesn't sound right. Also, just because it's a fuse from the 50's doesn't mean it's not available. You can pick those up pretty much anywhere or order them.

This story makes less sense with each post. Not blaming you in anyway OP - just bizarre. They offered no insight on what caused it to break?

    None....
If its under 3 years or 36k Toyota will pay for the repair. No deductible!!!! Sounds like a scam. After marker warranty don't kick in untill factory ends.

So looking behind the fuse at the paperwork the dealer is going to charge Toyota for replacing the starter? But they only replaced a fuse that doesn't look like a fuse on the Tundra? What's this Dealers Name? Capitalism at its best I guess.

Yeah, my OCD got the better of me and I ran outside to my truck. There is NO 100amp fuse. The biggest was a 50amp and it wasn't a 1950s fuse. OP must have had 1 to many today when writing this thread.

Something tells me that this tech doesn't like this advisor and possibly for good reason. So, he found an old fuse in his junk drawer and set out to make the advisor look like a total clown. All too often somebody gets a job because of who they know or blow and not because of what they know. Then there comes a time when good people don't give a damn because they are about to walk anyway so they play a few games on their way out. Just bad to need services and not know wether or not you might get caught up in the BS.

the starter is good and the battery is bad with 11.2 volts. Most small batteries like the one from your buddy's Tacoma will not be strong enough to jump the V-8 tundra

Just an FYI for everyone. If you have the extended platinum warranty, the deductible should be $50.

You ask "What on earth is this fuse doing?". It's posing as an imposter. That's what it's doing.

A glass fuse rated for 100 amps? No way. A glass fuse in a Tundra? Same thing. Unless you happen to add additional electrical equipment to your truck in your sleep.
These glass cartridge fuses only go as high as 30 amps. Speaking of high, that's how I would describe the tech that's spewing this load of BS.
