I really wish Toyota considered the joints a re-buildable component and sold the parts. Hopefully they start selling the remans again at some point.

I told Casey I been driving the 03 like a BMW or Porsche owner since we redid the rear suspension. Sometimes no blinker, bouncing from lane to lane and crossing two or three lanes sometimes

    Original owner!

Me and my 21 year old son just did both sides on his truck tonight. Only took about 1 1/2 hours. Both inner boots were split and slung grease all over. I also used the extended travel Trakmotives from Rockauto since OEM is no longer available. He did most of the work and I “supervised”. We will see how they hold up. I will hold on to the stockers and possibly rebuild them when the boots on these eventually tear.

I've had those once, think they were $80-$90ish around the time I bought them. Not bad... i mean, it's a cv axle, not much to them...just started to rust a lot quicker than I expected. Not about that life.

    Don't forget the dust seals!

That doesn’t help if the joint is worn though. It seems like that’s the one part Toyota doesn’t supply. I’ll hafta look back at the exploded diagrams again and see, I don’t think they sell just the joint. And I’m not sure what specialty tools may be required to replace the joint. I’m wondering if that’s part of the reason Toyota is opting not to rebuild these days.

Damn. I wish there were more photos of our DCs with the OEM rims with tires and lift when I was looking. I went back and forth with keeping mine, using a spacer and powder coating them or buying new with the proper offset for lift and tires. Went with Level 8's but these look goooood. Any rub or issues?

Uhhh, cotter pin? And why does it look like the castle for that UBJ is weird? Like too tight or something, looking at where the cotter hole is. I’d need to look back at the instructions to remember how the insert goes in, pretty sure the way you have it (insert from bottom) is correct but the castle nut should be in a position to be held by the cotter, which looks to be missing from your UBJ stem.

PS - Double-verify the UBJ top nut is torqued to spec, I think it’s like 148-150lbft, I’d need to look at instructions again. I re-verified every time I got an alignment. I don’t trust anyone touching my shit. :)

That’s gonna require torching. If that doesn’t work, then cutting out the cancer. :sawzall:
Maybe even welding a nut if you get to clean metal.

Do you plan to wrench it free with heat once the bed is off? Maybe there’s a spot to grip it from underneath with some giant vice grips or something.

If all else fails, maybe pouring some muriatic acid down the hole to eat away at the rust overnight and rinsing out in the morning. :notsure:

We're down to one stubborn stripped bolt. @des2mtn has been a big help. We made a harbor freight run based on his advice. Trying to use an extractor set on this last one.

No clue yet. Two have broken so far. Once we have the bed off we'll have to see what our options are. We're considering cutting the head off this last bolt. We got it to budge but nothing since then.

750 mile check-up on the front end bits.

everything is tight, grease stayed where it was supposed to, all is well.
