The problem with this is that used Toyotas are going for almost the same price as new. I eventually want to get another RAV4 for my wife but the 2-3 year old ones are maybe $3,000 less than new. At that point I'd rather just buy new so I get a full warranty and lower interest rate. The price doesn't really start to drop until you get closer to 100k miles. We also tend to keep our vehicles a really long time. We bought our current RAV4 new in 2012. I will probably keep it even when we get a newer one.

 

It’s really hard to let go of a paid off, well maintained vehicle. But I’d sell my 2019 tomorrow and not feel a thing.

 

Other drivers dont pay enough attention to own a compact car. Sometimes a full size truck isnt enough. Buy her a tank.

Something sketch with that listing. It’s missing “rebuilt title” or something. Too cheap for 200k miles. Also listed as 2000000 miles. Like 200k even? Probably not. If it’s legit, $3800 is a smoking deal.

 

Good advice @Tundra2. Alternately, if you can sell the car private party for same or more than that CarMax quote you get, do that because it's the easiest. Then take any cash you clear to add to down payment on anything you finance.

If what you're not saying is, you cannot pay what is owed on the old one, and must roll it into a new loan, this advice (above) wil help you keep track of what you're "really" gonna pay.

Nobody wants to tear apart their transmission if they don’t have to do it. You need to be meticulous about labeling parts and where they go (this coming from a coworker who did transmission repair in his past life).

BE aware that Toyota had sludge issues. I want to say the 6cyl motors mid or earlier 2000s, but that might be off.

 

I was gonna reply, then I saw @KNABORES reply here and it covers all the bases.

I've driven up to Carmax in the past and let them make an offer on my car. Painless process. But if there's any visible damage they'll nickle and dime you to death. It's great way to see if you're upside down.

There's also private sale, but if you know there's an issue and don't disclose, there's always a chance for legal recourse on the part of the buyer, and that's not what you need right now.

Sucks the deal on that Camry fell through. Solid little car that'll run forever. Whatever you do, don't take out a note. What ever happened with the Subie, did you sell it? Could she drive it as a stand-in for a minute?

 

Oh, and I typically don't buy cars from dealers. There's almost zero to gain and everything to lose. It's like gambling in Vegas. The house always wins.

NEW cars to us: 2020 and older. Should have prefaced. Yeah, the camry fell through. It ended up needing too much work that I just don't have time for ATM. I sold the subie for a few hundred more than I paid for it. I ditched ALL the shit I'd accumulated with Bastard.

Based on what I'm seeing online, I can tell we are just about upside down in it. I hate it.

With us having a split household because of my big boy, she needs a car, and can't be without one so there isn't an option of "We'll sell it, and then buy something later"

 

I’ve been on the hunt for kid friendly cars and looking at lots of Scion, Prius. Lots of stuff out there under 150k miles for $4k or less. I was surprised. But I don’t know what to look out for on them, so I haven’t been dabbling much. I prefer buying from known entities if I can.

 

If I were Noah, I’d probably shop for a 4th gen RAV4. One of the best gen’s in my opinion and most popular.

Do you mean 3rd gen? I thought the 4th gen less popular. I would try to get a 3rd gen with the V6. I wish I had gotten that engine but the 4cyl has been fine. 152k miles on ours now.

 

The 3rd gen is more affordable but the 4th gen is more popular (at least around here). Plus they have fewer bad years with problems. You also want to consider mileage.

 

Dude will be here around noon on Saturday to pick up the SHOs. It's gonna be nice having my driveway back.

Real question is ‘what do you need’? The allure of ‘new, modern, powerful’ is real, but if you can resist it, do.
I’ve been looking for a newer car for our family and am thinking nothing past about 2010, maybe mid teens for the right vehicle; they’re still fairly DYIable, but also modern enough to be safe, efficient enough and parts are available. Most newer cars are getting beyond working on at home (or in the tent of pain ;-)
I also don’t do debt as much as possible, I won’t buy a car I can’t pay cash for. I don’t like to give advice I may not be qualified to give, but I’d be looking for something mid 2000s to 2010ish that’s well maintained more than newer with lots of ‘features’.
You know not to be scared of higher miles (at least on a Toyota, maybe a Honda), and for a daily efficient (I know you know this, hence Corolla), a little due diligence on a model you’re not familiar with goes a long way too, that’s how I found this forum before buying my Tundra.
I avoid dealers too, but sometimes there can be deals, or if you need to do a trade in.

Is it worth taking current car (what is it btw?) to a shop for a better diagnosis? Might get enough additional value out of it fixed if it’s something simple.

 

Grandma's '08 pilot has been great. Its awd, and doesnt get the best mileage, but its easier on her than the '06 f150 she was driving. So far, she has lost the spare (cable broke) and when fitting new tires discount broke a tpms sensor. Everything else has been great and its near 250k. Still fun to drive because the j35 is a beast. Wouldnt wanna have to rebuild the fancy rear diff though.

i'd drive the spit out of a mr-s, but i wouldnt put my dog in anything less than 2 tons. No OD to keep anyone from speeding, and no a/c & a manual to instill a sense of urgency & duty into the driving expierience. All my gf's have driven a motorcycle, regardless if i've trusted em with a hair straightener.
