Hi I have a 2017 Tundra 1794 edition with TRD dual exhaust. It also has a Magnuson Supercharger. The exhaust is making this strange puffing sound at idle. The sound persists when the vehicle is warm and can be heard clearly while driving at certain speeds. It's been doing this for about 2 years. This sound is only present on the drivers side exhaust tip. The passenger side does not make this sound at idle. Pretty annoying in the summer time when all of the windows are down.https://youtube.com/shorts/-aZlLNqYOpE?si=HtEC6baB8BLf6zg7

Do you have a crossover pipe?

No I don't. It's a dual TRD exhaust. Each pipe runs independently from the headers all the way to the exhaust tips at the rear of the truck.

Right. If it is the stock TRD the two banks are independent.

It is recommended to run these with a crossover pipe. It helps with low end TQ loss and tone.

I don’t have a crossover pipe on my TRD duals either but I do recall hearing this sound before, but not recently. I do think a X or H pipe would get rid of it. I think it’s related to the exhaust pulses on that bank, which would probably be resolved by connecting the two banks together. Are your gaskets leaking where the catback connects at the flanges after the cats? Mine were pretty toasted and I had to replace them recently and it got rid of my ticking exhaust leak sound I had going.

Now, Im confused because my trd exhaust is only from the cat back, its not true duals from the headers...what gives ?

I have had the TRD Cat back dual exhaust on two CrewMax and have never heard that and have never run a cross over. Sounds like a leak to me. I would get it up on a lift and check each clamp and make sure everything is as it should be.

    This is a good point.

I smoke tested mine in a parking lot, it took 5 minutes to find a leak and the machines are pretty cheap if OP doesn't want to DIY.

Thank you everyone. I think I will start by looking for a leak! I highly doubt that this exhaust requires a modification to stop that sound or there would be a whole lot more complaints about this setup.

There are. The most common is the helicopter chop sound.
The loss of low end torque is also well documented on these forums as well.

Completely normal. I know three Tundra owners personally that have this system (myself included) and this is normal from one bank to another without a crossover. You normally hear this helicopter sound driving at highway speeds but once the engine is warm you can also hear it in park.

I have heard an H or X pipe helps this as well as the torque loss. I personally just went back to stock and feels like a new truck. May end up going with a dirty deeds or corsa system in the near future.

@FollowMe21 What did you remove to go back to stock? Just a crossover pipe? Or a whole TRD true dual system? I have the TRD dual system and am thinking about having a crossover pipe installed, but am nervous it's going to wildly change the sound

What ever happened with your setup? Did you find a leak or go with a crossover? I just ordered an x pipe and I’m going to install it after the cats and then run duals out the back using some dynomax race bullets.

    see sig for mods.....
The OEM TRD PRO is a true Dual Exhaust. I hear that 'fip' noise occasionally from one side to the other. I'm at 96K miles now, and the Helicopter noise has been gone since 10-15K once whatever they used in the exhaust cans packed down. It has also gotten quieter, but still sounds great.

The lack of a crossover (H or X pipe) has always intrigued me.....
