I was having quotes from 9-12k for the garage doors.

    Windows will be 50+

Are you kidding? Now granted it was a few years ago and shit was cheaper 3 or so years ago, but I got all the windows in my 2100 sqft house replaced with dual pane aluminum low e windows for just under $4k.

How many windows? Large? I could get low quality low e windows, but not 19 large and 5 standard size ones.

I have to custom order my windows and need something that can withstand the elements we get here (not that these Kolbe windows did). My walls are 8" thick.

Ok, never mind, I only have 7 and were all stock sizes. A few were larger, but no custom sizes. And holy fuck, those are some thick ass walls.

Trust me, I'm pretty sure I sharted when I got the first quote of 96K.

If we build our next home, more standard size windows will be installed. This has been ridiculously expensive.

In our area, 2x6 construction and 2" foam insulation is pretty standard due to weather. 2x6 construction is also code.

Almost finished second run on the planter...have to break a cinder block to fit (hid by the mixer). That finishes the lower end, then I'll step it up as it approaches the deck at the back. PXL_20240210_214538387.jpg

Ugh. I want to replace my double pane, builder grade windows but I really don't want to get a quote. Especially since I want to go triple pane and I'd have to do 7 windows, including the big kitchen one with a slider in it.

I'm having a new front door and back door installed this week. A little over $4000 by the time the dust settles. The front door will be solid with no glass, but the back door will have a triple pane glass window in it.

Building hand rails in the snow. Not great....but I'm on a deadline now.

We squared up the top handrails and mounted the lower posts.

    IMG_3490.jpg IMG_3491.jpg

Then started on the stairway rail.

    IMG_3489.jpg

I'm done freezing today. Spent a few hours on the tractor plowing snow.

The representative from Sierra Pacific doesn't even recommend triple pane glass anymore with the coatings and technology of today's windows. Then again, you do live in a cold climate as well.

My expense is also stucco repair...fyi.

Check the build link in my signature.
Our high was close to 55 today and sunny. I got all the debris that was in the front yard from the recent storms burned - probably about 18CY worth of branches, boughs, and other stuff. Took nearly 8 straight hours of cutting, hauling, and burning (with a blower running on the burn pile all day - 4 batteries).
    IMG_0989.jpg

At one point the burn pile pipe was glowing cherry red

Made the most of a record warm February day. More overhead work than my shoulders are used to, but we'll worth the $500 savings by doing it myself.

Complete maintenance on both overhead garage doors. Everything replaced except for the tracks and openers. This includes bottom seals. Fairly certain this is the first maintenance in their 30 years.

Finally won the battle replacing a shower valve. House is a little over 50 years. Had a two valve shower control in the walk in shower. It finally got to the point new seals and new seats just wouldn't close off the hot side. So I bought a MOEN single control and their 2/3 knob adapter plate. What none of the instructions said was you need to have the depth gauge 3/4" proud of the finished wall to accomidate the plate. And add in that the shower wall is 2" thick, made of steel mesh, concrete and tile and cutting the hole was no fun.

Luckily the wall backs up to a closet where I could open the wall to replace the pipes.

Did I mention there was a stud directly behind the valve.

Our double pane windows will ice up in winter when it gets really cold. Like, 1" thick and 3" high from the sill up...

What do the window reps around you say?

One of my buddies built his own storm windows to help mitigate the heat losses. They work well for the winter time.

get a dehumidifier and run it directly into your basement drain. Or an hrv but dehumidifier is inexpensive

sounds like you have a newer house that’s pretty sealed up.

They say its a common issue here due to our wild temp swings and that triple pane helps. They could just be trying to sell me new windows though...

Yeah, house was built in the last 15 years. We run a dehumidifier in the main rooms, it helps but doesnt solve the issue.
