Unless using something like POR15 suggest removing before painting. If the wire wheel isn't working can try one of or abrasive discs or sandblasting. Either would likely take just a few minutes to clean that up.

What about adjusting the mounting brackets so you have 1/8-3/16" gap?

I would attack that more. Needs to look more like what the top side is like in your previous picture.

I don't see how they could be adjusted. It bolts directly to very specific points on the frame.

Yeah I was being lazy but you guys convinced me to stay at it. I may have to make another China Freight run. Made more progress though.

Make sure to use the POR-15 metal prep for adhesion on clean metal if using POR-15 otherwise it’ll start to flake off in a week.

Grind a slot in the bracket where the bolt goes through.

Using a wire wheel or cup on a drill might help too, you can run it both directions unlike the angle grinder, I’ve had good luck dislodging rust that way.

The power will be the same, but where it comes in and the torque will be much better. Similar to how the new Tundra barely has more HP than the outgoing V8, but is loads faster because of where the power comes in and the 10 speed transmission.

Yes it is possible your wire wheel got tired and no longer has bite spinning in the same direction. Did you get the knarly twisted end one?

I really don’t like the harsh edgy body lines of the new Taco.
