I've seen something somewhere that when people have had their front axle replaced by Toyota for the bad needle bearings that the problem has been fixed. Is that just until it gets bad again or did Toyota fix the problem?

It’s the whole diff, not the axle. And it’s a total crap shoot whether it will ‘fix’ it or not. I think the Toyota logic is to replace everything, the carrier, needle bearing, and the kitchen sink in hopes the tolerances will be tight enough cumulatively that the harmonic woosh will go away.

Get the ECGS if you want it to actually go away. I replaced mine with the ECGS and it’s smooth as glass now.
