Procyon lotor is the Latin name for the raccoon, and lotor means “the washerman.” If you watch raccoons eating you'll notice that they often seem to wash their food before they dine.

 

Anyone here ever used one of those sites to look up your family history? I know my family is originally from Cork, but I'm starting to finally dig deeper. Thoughts?

Never have. I'm weird I guess because I don't really care much about it. Same if I found out I had a long lost brother that had been adopted before I was born. Zero effs.

You're not curious of where you came from? My family is a little odd because its mostly Irish/Scot but my Mother was Italian. I have tons of info about my Irish side but very little of her side.

Not especially. Like I said, I'm weird. My ancestry has nothing to do with me or who I am. My identity as a person is based on me, not what genes I have.

I have a very slight passing interest, but not this burning need to "find out who I am and where I came from" that I hear people talk about. Aside from the medical aspect I find ancestry borderline useless.

If I had heroes and kings or beggars and thieves in my lineage it doesn't affect me one way or the other. I think assigning a bunch of value to what people did or letting what happened to them 200 years before you were born is a bit counterproductive.

Look at the fools who feel guilty because their family had slaves or who feel like they suffered trauma because their family were slaves... stupid for both.
Learn from the past, but leave it in the past.

I hated most of history class, too. Lol

We had a long term sub in 7th grade history class.
He hated me.
I incessantly asked him questions and corrected him.
I finally stopped half way through the year when he had a red-faced, yelling, nervous breakdown.

 

I got to a point where I understood how it worked well enough that I could make my point to the person.

No idea. My ancestors came over from England and landed in Spaniard's Bay, Newfoundland in the late 1600's, early 1700's. Some of their cousins landed in the US around the same time as well. The English don't play well with Frenchies.
