Got a nice little EDC folder for Christmas. We traveled to Knoxville, TN for the holidays and visited Smoky Mountain Knife Works while we were in town, such a cool store.

We were there for the holidays so stopped in for the first time as well. That place is huge! I think we spent 2-3 hours there and that wasn’t nearly enough time to really look at everything!

No, I have not. But it seems pretty straightforward. Since I am pretty much focusing on pattern welded Damascus it looks like a small canvas to display a pattern.

these two were pretty difficult;IMG_0877.jpg IMG_0878.jpg

Ah, I didn't think about displaying a pattern. It's a simple design, but may not be worth the trouble of doing it in damascus.

Depending on price, possibly 2. I'd be looking for it to be around 5 to 6" long and roughly the same design, though an RT flair would be neat. It'd be used for paracord and up to 1.5" rope in my case.

I'm honestly not super concerned about having an eye popping pattern on it. They're like $30 for mass produced stainless ones so I just figured paying a bit more for a cool RT one would be better, and if it has a bit of a pattern thats just a bonus.

Maybe a group buy would be possible if others on here are interested and it makes it worth the effort?

I always just used the spike on my spud wrench when I had to make Molly hogans for rigging out of wire rope cables. Of course, these days, site built rigging is verboten!

I still get a lot of pleasure from using this knife. But I had a question come to me. I've only had to sharpen this one once and I used a stone. Question for Ray @gosolo , would it be ok to hit it with the steel occasionally? My Gerber kitchen knives are SS, I think 440A, and I run them across the steel every time I use them, my exectutive chef doesn't, so it's maybe every fifth use or so. They stay shaving sharp. I'm not sure that the carbon steel would really be affected by using the steel.

I know what a Molly Hogan is, though I've never actually done one myself.

I've touched up my @gosolo knife with my steel a few times without issue. I generally stick with my ceramic honing rod and give it a few swipes each use. That keeps it popping sharp.

The effectiveness of a steel depends on the quality, just like with knives. I use my own knives in the kitchen most of the time and it seems like I take them to the shop and whetstone maybe twice a year to make the edges perfect and restore the profile. That’s usually good for a month or so but then I will occasionally use a few strokes on my steel. My steel is a very good one, bought separately from any set, at a high end knife shop. The steels that come with the stamped stainless steel knife sets are usually very course and low quality.

Knives are addictive! They can be beautiful! They can be dangerous! They can be useful! And they can be fun. But worst of all is, they can be expensive, lol.

What knife does your daughter carry? How old is she? I will be working on a knife this year for my granddaughter’s 18th birthday.
She wants a double edged neck knife, like a small dagger.
