I'm in the process of building a shed for all the lawn equipment, and I'm curious if anyone has used 84 Lumber. I have a Lowes and Home depot that are cheap but sell shit material as well as a local independent lumber yard with great lumber but high prices and crap customer service if you aren't buying enough lumber to build a house.

how have your experiences been at 84 lumber in regards to customer service, quality of materials and price?

Ok by shed I mean mini barn.... it is 12'x16' with a full gambrel roof so just over 13' high at the peak. It will run me somewhere around $1800 to buy the material and build it versus between $4k-$5k to buy one that is of lesser build quality. Plus I really enjoy building.

What I've usually done is culled the stuff from Home Depot myself. If the lumber package is big enough for an order at the contractors desk and a forklift delivery, I cull it on site and haul the bad crap back and exchange it. I have never had any argument.
I've never dealt with lowes on any large orders.

We have 84 Lumber here in Central New York. I have purchased from them and they are much more knowledgeable than the big box workers. Plus they have helped me pick through their stock for lumber that is true and with minimal blemishes.

I built my own shed a few years back - 12'x10' - and I actually overbuilt it. It is better constructed than my house.

I bought a bunch of 2x4's recently at home depot for an addition we were building and I was amazed at how straight everything was, nothing was bowed or twisted. Then I got it home and realized that they coated the cut ends in wax to keep the moisture in.

That's why I want to build it myself, Most the prefab stuff is 24 OC with 1/2" flooring and the floor joists are 2x4's spanning up to 5 foot. We get some pretty significant snow loads and I would prefer to have it built right.

Much prefer 84 lumber then box stores for big projects. Used them for my 12x12 shed I built a few years ago as well as my fence. Was cheaper and quality was better.

Yep, the snow loads here get substantial. I prefer not to have to rake the roof. My roof is built with 2x6 trusses 16 oc (I built the trusses) with a 8/12 slope. Roof decking is 3/4" plywood, not osb, but real plywood. My walls are 2x4 16 oc. Floor is 3/4" treated ply with 2x8 floor joists 16 oc. I was excessive and it cost me about $1800 in materials back 14 years ago. However, the shed has held up very well. No issues at all. It pays to build them right the first time.

The only thing I wish I would have done was put a metal roof on it. Where my shed sits, its very shady, and moss grows on the shingles. No leaks or anything, but I don't like the look of the moss. The shingles will probably last another 10 years though. Maybe I'll put a metal roof on it at that point.

Damnit now you have me looking at metal roofs.... its next to the wood line and will get a fair amount of shade on the back side.

Sure is brotha. Been doing it for 12 years now. We compete with 84 from time to time. We have a store in Lakeville, CT. Not sure how far that is from you but we deliver quite a ways away.

Its about an hour, but I'd rather send the business to someone I know.

84 sells eastern spruce and some doug fir. We sell a western spruce. Its a higher quality product, but a little more expensive. If you've got a material list, shoot me a PM or text and I can hook ya up w some pricing.
