What was a fact you were taught in school, that has been disproven in your lifetime?

I know this isn't what you meant, but the way I read this makes it sound like he woke up from having CPR and there was nobody there, like, his ghost gave him his own CPR or something - spooky, not gonna lie

Pronounced dead and dead may or may not be the same thing. Depends on our understanding, which is most certainly limited and possibly even flawed. I'd find that no more convincing a lack than I find bad things happen to good people.

It just doesn't measure up to the disproven level the thread inquires about.

Edit: I should clarify that I am not preaching or anything. Purely pointing out that on the best day there is no definitive undeniable proof for or against the existence of God. You do as you wish on the matter, as everyone should.

not here to talk religion, simply saying that school tried to push religion on me and nothing of what the stated as fact has ever been proven to me.

Totally understandable, but it's not disproven as the thread requests.

I'm just playing devil's (or God's) advocate for fun because it's a little slow in the office. Don't take me seriously.

I do agree it is hard, if not impossible to disprove the existance of god. Can we apply the same inability to disprove to Ogopogo or Sasquach? Maybe Pierre Noel needs needs to be given a little more credit?

I found that not having a degree prevented you from even being considered by HR for technical positions if applying out in the cold. If it was not for people I knew and worked with, I would never have been given engineering responsibility and advanced up through high-tech companies (HP being one of them). I retired at the top of my game as an R&D Mechanical Engineer designing gas phase mass spectrometers and gas chromatographs for the world leading company.

I LOVED my jobs since first joining an R&D department at a small company back in the late 70s. There are thousands of drawings with my name on them as responsible engineer in use today manufacturing products that I designed. A few patents also.

I could not have had it any better.

    Too many, but not enough....
I cant say that I experienced this kind of brainwashing that financial success is only possible with a degree, it isnt, but i will say that college was beneficial to me. I dont think most people will come out any worse by taking some critical thinking, personal finance, social psychology or problem solving classes. People dont really talk about money in a way that helps people understand what it is. I can honestly say, the most helpful classes for me were finance, psychology and philosophy critical thinking and problem solving classes, as well as physical sciences. Also, the social aspects of college does mimic things in the corporate world like teamwork and dealing with non compliant people in general. Is it 100% the only way to get exposure to things like that or learn those principles? Of course not, but i feel that I came out with knowledge I needed and used alot earlier than I woudl have otherwise picked up on it on my own and time saved and or negative experiences avoided is worth more than money.

Absolutely. There's not proof to confirm or deny the existence of the skunk apes, though I've met some people that make me think there might be crossbreeding happening!

To circle back around to @ColoradoTJ's point about his wife, the principal she applied was work ethic and having a plan. Neither of which is taught in college. Because we can also look at his own path where he too is successful. You can't teach work ethic. That's on us as individuals to have it or not.

No degree here, just a trade and 15+ years experience. I make significantly more than nearly everyone I know with a degree. I make more than the P.Eng guys I work with.

Hard work, perseverence, some good choices and a little bit of luck got it done for me. It would take a pretty drastic economic downturn for me not to make over $100K and an even bigger one for me to be unable to find work.

My grade 10 math teacher can stick that in his pipe and smoke on it.

Not to cherry-pick here, but "pick pluck pick pluck"

First, your numbers are reversed. 4 years of med school and a minimum of a "simple" residency like internal medicine or family practice for another 2-3 years is very, very easily 400k in debt. And completion of those "simple" residencies aren't paying $250k/year, unless you're living in some relatively cosmopolitan area where your cost of living will more than eat-up that. And that is if you complete residency and hang a shingle. Working in a hospital setting you can expect about $50k less or more depending on location/demographics. And shittier hours, "intern!"
Back to private practice (hanging a shingle): Building's aren't free. Building them out to suit your practice isn't free. Malpractice insurance isn't free. Are you buying a practice from a retiring physician? Expect $500k-1mil purchase price (again location) and that price is figured on Gross revenue; Can you run a million dollar practice by yourself? With just some exam gloves? Nope, equipment & employees cost money. Good luck hiring minimum wage staff too.

Sorry, not trying to patronize you or anything, but just wanted to dispel the myth of doctors just balling out immediately out of school.

Also, the loans to buy buildings and practices aren't 30 year mortgages either. More like 10. Changes this monthly payment a smidge.

The best part of my day is when some Uber rich person is on a ski lift with me. And inevitably the question comes up, where are you from? When I say I live in *****, they always respond with you're so lucky, it's so amazing here. My response is pretty standard at this point since I've been doing this for almost 26 yrs. It's a choice, luck has nothing to do with it. Just like you made a choice that lead you to be able to afford skiing here even though you don't live here.

Edit: Tying this into the college is the way mentality I can say I'm happy I made the choices that lead me to where I am today.

I get you, you arent wrong, i was just throwing out numbers for an example. My brother is a resident right now getting paid 60k and getting ass packed with shitty hours. His debt is no where near 400k because he did alot of community college and went to medschool in the caribbean. But yes, you are technically correct for most people. BUT even with that, you dont have to open your own practice, you can just work at a hospital and stack overtime or go help out other hospitals or doctors.. It all depends how you go.

I am not even 40 and I still write checks and yes, in cursive too lol. There are still a surprising amount of people that want checks, namely government related things. Also, I like paying with checks sometimes if its an establishment that I dont trust with my credit card or something.

Us calibration folks did just that. We use SI units and the old school SAE.

It wasn't to protect you from a nuclear explosion. You'd be dead instantly. It might help you if far enough from the shock wave when it hit.

Yes you can. Doesn't matter if someone is there already. Columbus didn't discover America. There was no America. He and crew did discover what eventually what was the gateway to America. Named after Amerigo Vespucci. But there was Eric the Red, Leif "Erics"son, and company long before the Spanish hired the Italian that sailed west, what eventually led to the the raping, pillaging, disease, theft of riches all over South America. Why does Spain get a pass. Spain didn't discover shit.
