Speaker upgrade

Hi All!

I’m relatively new to the forum which I’m enjoying reading all the information available!

I’m interested in upgrading the stereo and or maybe just the speakers. I don’t have the JBL system. I’m basically looking for a little more pop when turning it up occasionally.

I have a crewmax HV, unfortunately no extra room under the rear seats for a small sub or whatever.

I would love to hear what others have done and or suggestions.

The JBL system puts the sub behind the back seat on the driver's side. the amp is under the driver's seat. I suppose you could do something similar.

 

Do you have the JBL? If so, can you take a picture where they are both located please.

Factory amp/sub is trash. I was really let down. My 2012 factory sub pounded the bass out, the 3rd gen......more like rumbling thunder. Its like no one set the crossover frequencies at the factory

 

I agree. Why mold build install this custom sub. And then not have it hit. Does make me wonder if it’s just a tweaking of the system and not a full replace

 

I can't speak for the gen 3 system, but I've found with. most other vehicles I've owned that came with a factory sub, adding a new amplifier will liven things up a bit as long as you can get a clean signal to the new amplifier. The downside is, most factory subs are pretty limited on excursion, so you need to limit low end a bit or the sub goes Ker-thunk instead of thump thump.

That said, I always prefer an aftermarket sub. Flat subs have come quite a ways the last few years.

 

I've already purchased two sets of component 6.5s for the front and rear doors. I haven't had time to install them yet. I've been looking at subs and an enclosure that would fit. I was curious as to why Toyota would mount the JBL sub the way they did as I have never seen it before. I learned that there's such as thing as "free-air" mounted subs. Read more articles and watched some YouTube about the subject. As with anything, there are pros and cons to it. There was a review about a Pioneer sub (TS-Z10LS2) "An absolutely stunning subwoofer. I compete in national sound quality events and this sub provides unbelievable accuracy and impact. I have it mounted in a free air configuration and it's able to deliver gobs of bass without filling up my trunk with a giant enclosure." So, with this new info, I decided to pull the trigger on a Pioneer TS-D10LS4 shallow mount and see it'll fit the existing location and see how it sounds. I also have a mono amp (Pioneer GM-D8701) ready to install if necessary.

 

A sub that can be used in free air just means that the sub doesn't need a specific enclosure volume or sub box; BUT, you do need to separate the back wave of the woofer from the front wave via a baffle. 6x9 speakers in the rear deck of your sedan in high school is the perfect example; you could get some pretty thumpin' bass from a set of 6x9's on the rear deck, but the speaker was actually using the the trunk as the enclosure. Usually, as subwoofer box acts as an air spring and bolsters the speakers suspension, which consists of the surround and spider (cloth thing with ridges on it like a potato chip that sits on top of the magnet and is connected to the speaker voice coil at the bottom of the cone). Being free air capable means that the suspension and magnetic system behave in a such a way that it doesn't need much assistance from the air spring of a tuned enclosure.

But if you don't separate the back wave of the woofer from the front wave, they will cancel each other out and you will get no bass. For example, if you just put the subwoofer in the middle of the truck without any box or baffle, it will make some noise but you won't get any bass. Years ago, a friend of mine had a little Nissan king cab pickup; the stereo shop build baffles for the floor behind the seats and mounted his subs in those baffles. There was no box to speak of, but they separated the back wave from the front and used a free air compatible sub (an old Pioneer IMPP, actually) and it rocked.

I have used Pioneer gear for years. The D series is a pretty good value for the money but you will need an enclosure for it. IIRC, the 10" shallow mount only needs something like .5 cu ft sealed and it will thump. I ran a 12" Pioneer shallow mount for several years in several different enclosures and sealed honestly worked the best. Even ran it off a Pioneer 8601 (the same as your 8701, but with a different cover on it..). Should work great for you.

I don't have the JBL system, but here is what the enclosure (if you want to call it that lol) looks like with the trim panel removed. At best (from looking at a picture) and I'm being generous that enclosure is.5 cu ft or less

Wow, it makes sense now that the sub doesn't have any authority or real accuracy. That's kind of embarrassing. Hopefully someone will come up with an actual enclosure that can fit in the same spot.

 

There are options, depending on whether or not you have a hybrid, you can get an enclosure for under the seat, or if you want to pull the plastic trim panels off the back of the back of the cab permanently there are options for behind the seat

 

I'm hybrid so I'm guessing the removal of the plastic trim would be the route I would have to go. Just got the 3rd gen this last Saturday, it's a lot to take in coming from a 2.5 gen Tundra and 3rd gen Tacoma.

 

I had a 3rd Gen Taco and I thought space behind the seat was a premium until I got my Tundra. My JL Stealthbox from the Taco was no where close to fitting based on the depth and angle of the seat back. The Tundra behind the seat boxes are limited on sub use, very shallow. It's not really the end of the world not having the plastic trim removed, unless you are are planning on always having the seats down where you can see the bare metal

 

you can always cover that area in carpet as well.

when I put my stuff from my 16 back in , Ill have a new box made and go back to my thin mount JL 10".

it offers real and plenty of punch
