So after all your stored food is gone and everyone in the lower 48 killed everything in the woods and only dogs are left. What type of dogs can you eat. We all know that dogs can be prolific breeders just like pigs and rats.

I'm sure if it came down to do you could easy any type of dog. personally there are certain types animals i won't eat unless there is nothing else. Dogs being one of them

 

Yeah I here ya but I asked the question becasue in my past employment, I worked with someone who would eat dogs in his home country and he mention you can only eat certain type of dogs.

Let me look, I think I have a recipe for that around here.

 

What we've got is 7 gal pails of various grains that are nitrogen packed: lintels, wheat, rice, pinto beans, corn. These will last over 10 years if unopened. The beans seem to be tough after that, so cycle them. Pantry is full and we've 2 deep freezers. If the power outage lasts longer than the generator fuel, we will use the pressure canner to preserve all the stuff in the freezers. The house is on propane with a buried 500 gal tank, so the stove will work for about 8 months if we're not using the gas for heating water. I've got several water filters and am not too far from the river. As long as I can get home I'm probably good for a little while.

 

We would need to get a Huey to carry all your messages, haha. I hear they are affordable nowadays...

I used to shoot pigeons off the power line with a pellet gun and eat them. I've tried garden snails, snake, horse and mud turtles.
If I'm hungry enough I'm probably willing to try dog. Remember though, that in a survival situation a living and loyal dog could be worth his weight in cigarettes and coffee!

Interesting....little did I know when I started this post just yesterday, that we would be a down range probable target of Irma...the attached model does not look good and pretty much reflects that we very well may be.
Lots of prayers for the people of FLA, GA, SC the loss of life for those who think they can ride it out will be staggering in the coastal regions. Hopefully they will listen and evacuate. We have contacted friends in Fla and Ga and offered them a place to stay.

So mean while back here at our ranch, we are keeping a close watch on Irma here in Western NC. I am in the process of staging and excersising our Honda 7000EU Generator, Gentent and checking our fuel supply. The Honda is an amazing generator, I will leave it at that, it's a Honda. Our fireplace, heat, cook top, and hot water heater Rinnai (Rinnai on demand hot water heater) are all natural gas. These appliances do not tax my generator, I specified Nat/gas as a requirement when we custom built our home. And NG is clean burning and fairly inexpensive constant fuel. Checked to make sure our vehicles and motorcycles, and chain saw have a full tanks of gas as well. Many neighbors have large trees looming over their homes, I will be there to help my neighbors with my Husqvarna saw if the call comes, it's just what neighbors do. The wind and soaked ground up end shallow rooted trees of all varieties.

Checked several full propane bottles for the bbcue grill, the Traeger smoker is electric and pulls little power, only a fan and auger after the pellets ignite.

Checked all of our emergency food and water located next to a "safe room" in the basement. The basement is 2600 sq ft with two of our four exterior walls below ground and a walkout patio to the back yard and densely wooded ridge. We built on a ridge so flooding is a nonplayer. All water drains from the high ridge into a 1700 acre fresh water lake below.

Checked to make sure I stow and secure in the basement garage anything outside e.g. Lawn furniture tables etc..that could be come a flying missiles. Fortunately when we built we had all really super tall pine and wild cherry trees removed, trees falling on our home nonplayer. So no minimal threat there.

Monday and Tuesday it could get pretty dam ugly here in Western NC with rain and hurricane force winds. I have gone over all my emergency check lists and preparations and am confident I have done all I can do to prepare our home. This could really put our preps to the test.

We have plenty of food, clean water, gen power and heat, it was 58d here this morning. I like the cool temps, but having heat is a plus when you need it. Our home is open to our neighbors if the power goes. It's just how I am wired pun intended haha. Gotta take care of your neighbors.

So the next two days we have we can tweak our list wait on Irma to make her way.
We are not perfectly prepared, but I feel like we at least have a plan.

We have planned our dive, and now we will dive our plan.

Just ordered this today...Bounty Hunter Land Pro with 11" DD "waterproof coil". I already have a Teknetics Gamma 6000 and a Fisher F2. (and a vintage mid 70's White's CoinMaster that stills works..no CPU.. you truly need to know what you are doing.... without a CPU you really need to know what ground balancing is all about. Especially in mineral rich soil found here in CO.) What does a metal detector have to do with being prepared?? Think about it.................locating underground pipes, buried beer stash, property markers, old underground missile silos, where you buried your Bouncing Betty's or someone else's, "forgot where I ran my Claymore wires".... ..heh..heh... More seriously ......A good way to spend quality time with the grandkids.

If a nuclear attack happened in Southern California I'd rather the nuke hit me and my loved ones square on the head. I'd rather be gone than try to live through some catastrophic scenario. I always think of that scene in "The Road" where the father shows his son how to shoot himself if he needs to... thanks but no thanks.

 

The odds are probably much higher of an apocalyptic earth quake hitting CA than a Nuclear weapon. Like the one that just rocked Mexico. Sitting on a fault line.

Agreed that natural disaster has more chance of triggering a mild SHTF scenario, but short of yellowstone finally popping, any natural disaster should be regionally impacting rather than global or countrywide meaning that help to some degree is on it's way and you just need to get by until it does.

In no way do i want to trivialize that though... looking at the aftermath of Irma in the Caribbean, even with help on the way, the situation turned desperate very quickly with people having to defend themselves and their supplies with machetes and sticks. Someone earlier said they'd prefer the nuke on the nose... I have to agree, i don't really want to live in a post apocalyptic world, but I'm highly motivated to get through any natural disaster that comes my way provided i have tundras.com and a cup of tea afterwards.
