Math class about imaginary numbers was a waste of time. They don’t exist in my checkbook.

    Too many, but not enough....
I don't agree with this as I have seen it hold people back at my company. Guys excellent at his job but he maxed out his department because company requires a degree for the next promotion. They won't budge on it as it's corporate policy. It happens.

But is that the exception in the market, or the rule? Also, he's maxed out in his department, but does he make good money? They pushed so hard when I was in school that if you didn't go to college you would be stuck at burger king for life, and that trades weren't reliable or profitable. That was complete horse pucky.

I wouldn't say that's complete BS. Unless it's changed, people with a degree do make more in their lifetime(on average). The lie was them telling an entire generation that you HAVE to get a degree to be successful. There are plenty of successful people that didn't go to college.

I picked a useful degree(supply chain) and it's been good to me. A lot of people with degrees are not doing well though.

Some kind of advanced education after high school is beneficial. A job at the fast food place should not be a life goal. Granted, I live in coal country & oil and gas country. A kid right out of high school can make a lot of money but they spend it as fast as they get it & buy toy after toy (motorcycles, jets skis, snowmobiles, 4-wheelers, campers, new vehicles). It’s amazing how many kids with $1500 truck payments end up at the local soup kitchens when they get laid off.

Our company is the same way. One can get to superintendent level without a degree. That's around 140-170k a year. For the amount of hours these employees work....F that. Hell I'm knocking on the high end of that pay scale and only work 6 months out of the year.

Do I wish that I had a worthy degree? Yes I do. It may have opened doors that are closed to me now. My wife has proven that a few times in her career and now clears me hourly by 8.00 an hour.

I do believe that the degree dream is pushed inappropriately in schools. It is taught that going way deep in debt and then spending 10-20 years paying it off is normal. Now college bound young adults have to prove they are self sufficient for over a year to get student aid or the parents have to co-sign. If you don't have medical insurance, they add it to your tuition at around 700.00 per month. What a racket.

All of the school debt to go with it…fuck that. So make the money to get the career, and then spend most of your life paying it back.

I work in science, this hits home and it's pretty saddening. But the dumbing down of schools was gonna come at a cost, and now so many can't tell the difference between science, technology and magic, genuinely think it's all about opinion, and that having one makes it valid, or that cherry-picking results somehow builds a case to support a position... It's been a bad post-2019 world for anyone that knows their virology & immunology.

Well... and now we are all paying for a lot of folks' advanced education; 'forgiveness' sounds great, but the debts are still being paid by the tax payers

not trying to derail the 'spirit' of the thread... but to me, this and many other 're-directs' that are similar in nature, are what I've learned as an adult are contrary to what I was taught by our educational systems early on

This question probably needs a qualifier to the era you attended school. When I attended school, we were taught that Communism and Socialism were a scourge on the human spirit that killed millions of people in its wake. Today, its openly taught in our classrooms and universities.

Oh, one from the very young kindergarten/elementary days: If you are in trouble find an adult.

Yeah, not now days, and even then it's not like an adult has any more idea of how to handle situations than anyone else.

The main issue is that a degree in a low desired or paid field can cost the same as one where you go in clearing 100k out the gate. Also tuition nowadays is ridiculous. I came out of school with some debt, but it was less than 20k. I remember paying like 40 bucks a semester for parking and now its like 350 bucks, like wtf lol. Paid that debt in a few years and it was not a burden to do it. Being in debt 250k when you are a doctor making 400k plus is nowhere near the same as being in debt 100k+ and making 19 bucks an hour talking about art during the french revolution. Regardless of what people say, one must do their own research and planning. It comes back to the same problem in our society nowadays, personal responsibility. There will always be people trying to "sell" you something, be it snake oil or the promise of a financially secure future.

I dont know the answer to that, but what I think the answer will be as we go into the future, companies become more corporate, corporations buy out the little guys more and more, and there are less private or mom and pop style business' that this will start being more and more the case.

He absolutely makes good money, but lets be honest, most people want to continue to grow in their careers, and hes not an old guy, meaning, he would be working for alot of years getting minimal raises at his capped pay bracket.

Trades are and have always been viable fields, and are necessary and pay just as good as alot of other jobs. The main thing with trades type careers is social things over the years. One decade trades are hyped where as the next decade they may be seen as less desirable. I think it comes as goes related to the perception or cost of college and the economy in general. Everything is tied together somehow.

We'll gang, we got into the nuts and bolts pretty quickly here. And we're right on track with the most disillusioned thing that our tax funded school system teaches us that is no where near true; That going to college will be the only path towards gaining financial freedom.

Even though I have a college degree, thank you gi bill, I've learned more about humanity and winning at life in the suck than I ever did in any classroom. And in the end trades kept me finically secure and I never bought into the American dream that more is better. I never became fulfilled by promotions and titles.

I am one of many stories that college wasn't what lead us into financial freedom. And that success isn't defined by our peers or how much money we make.

I could care less about any title. Whether it be college graduate or some bullshit senior level manager in some bullshit company. What I do care more about is living a quality life balance of freedom from the masses that overrate these titles and still being able to afford the things that keep me smiling.

What they teach gradeschool/highschool level varies wildly by the state - and what the media tells people they're teaching.

Amazingly, the anti-woke states scour the bottom of the barrel in educational levels en masse too, but that's none of my business over here sipping tea.

I could go on rants for hours about this. Not sure I'd be able to access my account anymore though. So I'll keep it simple and stay within the coc.

I can't speak for other states or even other counties in my own state, but I know our school board adopted new curriculum based on standards that were passed down from the governors office. This curriculum, has more to do with a focus on CRT, gender identity and bringing non English speaking students up to speed than it does at maintaining or elevating state standards in science, math, and reading/writing comprehension. Our schools in my county used to be meeting state standards and now we are well below that threshold. Now I'll be the first to admit that I think standardized testing isn't a good way to measure teachers success. And I'll add that dumbing down those core subjects and switching the focus onto subject matter that isn't founded in rules but rather opinions is asinine.

I can't believe what tuition costs either. One can go to a state school for pretty reasonable (under 9500 per year), but some of these other schools I see 30k or more per year and they are not "Ivy League" at all.

For some reason people think they need to go to school right out of HS and do 5 more years right away. There are other ways to get your schooling finished without mounds of debt. My wife is a good example of this:

-She had a 3.8 GPA out of HS, but that wasn't good enough to get any real scholarships. She applied for every grant available to her and paid for her first year. She was also working 3 jobs.

-She continued down this path and purchased her first home at 19 or 20. It was a nice two bedroom townhome.

-At 21 she was hired on with the company she still works for and will retire in 3.5 years. It was a labor job with a shovel, but it paid well and needed to save up more money for school.

-a new vehicle was needed and she had her eye on a Tacoma. She started saving for that and school. At 22 years old she purchased a new 2000 Tacoma TRD and paid cash.

-Her focus changed a little when we met. Guess she was sidetracked a little with all the snowboarding, mountain biking, motocross, etc. nonetheless she was still saving. We were married before her 24th birthday. We spent 4000.00 total on the wedding..rings included.

-School was still a priority to finish her Bachelor degree. She was in an apprenticeship, and going to school (our company pays for related schooling up to 4K a year). We paid out of pocket for the rest of her schooling.

At 26 years old my wife had accomplished a metering apprenticeship, lineman apprenticeship (required for the meter tech position), and a Bachelor's Degree. This allowed her to do the following:

    - Meter division supervisor. Degree required. This paid over 100k twenty years ago starting.

-Field Engineering. Degree required. This also paid over 125k ten years ago starting.

-Economic Development Specialist for the city of Colorado Springs. Degree required. This pays very well and I now have a sugar momma.

She came out of this without a penny in debt and did so much more by planning, saving, using resources that were available to her.

Yup. Like @MadMaxCanon said, personal responsibility is a big determining factor in success. She didn't do stupid shit and expect the world to pick up the tab. Well, except marrying you. That might not have been smart! :p:boink:

I'm definitely not saying that some degrees don't open doors, but the BS they pushed was that the only path to financial solvency was to get a degree and that any degree made you more desirable because it showed you had commitment and work ethic. Absolutely absurd. We have an engineering department at my company and about two thirds of the engineers are great test takers with great degrees, but know nothing about how to do their jobs or make anything work. On top of that, they have shitty attitudes of entitlement and try to push of the actual work of their job to "lesser" people who aren't engineers because it's beneath them. Then, they argue with the people making it work because they don't understand it and they try to wield the degree and title like it somehow makes their stupidity less stupid.

Degrees, some at least, do have a place and purpose. @ColoradoTJ showed a perfect example with his wife's career journey, but a degree in underwater basket weaving and gender arts is laughable and should be mocked.
