Driver Door Wind Noise/ Hit Run

Parked, lunch, back to truck, some meat head caved in my drivers door. Shop repaired, now brutal wind whistle at 70kph and up. Sounds like its coming from the corner of the drivers door A piller. Door has been taped, no effect. Mirror taped to no effect. Driver door seal replaced, no effect. Window seal replaced, no effect.

I and the body shop are at a complete loss -

One observation is folding in the mirrors eliminates the whistle. Putting the interior cab on recirc air mostly eliminates the whistle.

My opinion is folding the mirrors just alters the exterior wind flow and air pressures on the side of the truck. The mirror has been fully taped

Any ideas?

 

I have a whistling noise in my 21 Platinum, same thing in that folding the windows in eliminates the noise. I have tried taping up the gaps and the drain hole but it did nothing. The only thing that helped is putting the AC on recirculate. Still does it occasionally though.

 

same, recirculate air diminishes the whistle, but does not fully eliminate it. What bothers me is even when the truck was damaged, it didn't whistle, in fact was a very quiet truck. I just can't stand it. Still investigating - but this isn't normal.

Has the windshield been replaced recently?

 

Did the shop get a new door frame to replace?

 

I had a 2013 that would whistle terrible bad. I found that lowering the window like 1 mm made it go away. No idea why it helped. But it would most certainly stop. I was so happy my 2019 doesn’t do it.

 

It sounds like it's air escaping that's causing it. Aren't there vents behind the back seats that allow inside air to be released? I'd look for them and see if they are stuck closed. Usually slamming the door with all the windows up keeps these vents working.

Its a Feature, they all do it, just under specific conditions. Usually for me it takes strong winds coming from say about 2 o'clock while I'm also traveling at least 70 or more, any other wind direction won't do it. Google it, there are so many that complain about this noise, some with solutions that work for some folks. Luck.

My story is here. My wife's Volvo was T-boned, not bad one, driver's door dented. Body shop inspected and quote was to replace the skin only. Just a few days before we brought the car to the shop, there was a rain and water drops are seeping from the door. Told that to the shop and they change the plan to replace entire door frame.

 

I am happy to report the problem is solved. I pulled the mirror off and found a household-like weather strip (appears to have been the tech that did this). I taped the mirror holes, and drove it, no wind whistle. I doubled up the weather strip, and reattached the mirror, no wind whistle. I attached a picture of a factory mirror, see the foam weather strip around the bolts, see mine - nothing. Here is what happened. The body man removed the mirror for door repair. That compromised the original weather strip on the mirror, allowing for an air leak. The air leak was confirmed to be coming from air inside the cabin being drawn out, not external air. We are going to try and replace the mirror weather strip, if that fails, then replace the mirror. I have to say to those who also experience wind whistles around the mirror, that these weather strip seals have very low tolerances. They may pack out/ compress over time just enough to allow for an air leak. In my case, it was the removal of the OEM mirror that compromised the seal.

 

Great info! Do you have the part number for the weather strip or did you just use generic roll of weather strip?

 

What I did was add another layer of weather strip to the existing seal, so effectively doubled up on the weather strip - 1/4" readily available at Home Depot. That eliminated the whistle. However, this is a bit of a backyard fix, but it works. If you don't get it right, your mirror will not sit tight/ flush to the door. I left it to the body shop to see if they can order a seal kit for the mirror, failing that, a new mirror will be installed.

 

I took off the driver's side mirror this weekend, cleaned the seal and tightened everything up. So far, no more whistling noise.
