Construction Technology conference part of the week (my line of work), meetings with our sister companies the middle of the week, then touring some fabrication shops in Atlanta. A few really good meals intermixed and probably a couple shows. And in Atlanta I’m staying with my friend who has a 1400 bottle wine cellar and she wants to talk shop (we’re in similar lines of work) and drink wine…

The genie asked, "What’s your first wish?"
Steve replied, "I wish I was rich!"
The genie nodded and said, "What’s your second wish?"
Rich exclaimed, "I want lots of money!"

In my union wee have two groups of peoplez. Prof’s (stands for Professionals?) that have engineering degrees from accredited programs. Tech’s are basically everyone else.

Profs (like me) are salaried, but we still have to itemize our time and OT is our “hourly rate” + $6.50. Maybe more on Sundays and holidays…not sure. Techs are true hourly with 1.5x pay for OT (more on weekends and holidays). Generally speaking Profs have better base pay than Techs, but not by much in some cases.

Travel is where things get interesting. In my contract, weekend travel and anything over 8 hrs during the week is “free”. It is Saturday morning here in Dublin and I checkout soon for home. All is “off the clock”. I can shift my calendar, so today is technically a normal work day (8hrs) and I get Monday off.

If I was a Tech, I could get paid OT for my entire return trip…17hrs. Many of our trips can last 25-30 hours each way. Years ago I worked with a few techs and they always pushed to travel after a workday or on the weekend. Smart move on their part…

    Deal Google,

If you want more effective ad revenue on Youtube you should fire the algorithm monkey serving up my ads.

You know I am from America and in Dublin…what makes you think I speak German or that I need to send money home “fast and easy” to Africa!?

We have this interesting contract agreement for travel pay. OT no matter what over 40, but only during normal "office hours". So if we fly out for training on a Sunday @ 0700 and check in at the hotel @ 1630, it's all paid for. You fly out early or get in late, oh well.

Not a terrible deal, just weird

Mine is way simpler. Anything over 40 hours in the same Sunday through Saturday week is OT paid x1.5 hourly rate. Any and all travel is paid time and eligible for OT. If you use your own vehicle you can get reimbursed for mileage (don't know the rate because I don't travel in my position), and any training or convention stuff is considered working hours.

Love handling immigration before I depart. Thank you Canada and Ireland.

Confirmed this trip a rumor I have heard about for years. The “one bottle of alcohol is duty free; gotta pay taxes over that” rule is more like “just buy less than how lazy you think the Immigration agent will be”. I put my two bottles on the counter and said “I will pay the taxes” and all I heard was “Pfffft”.

They have much better things to do than dig around for paperwork.

Next trip the wife is coming along. Guess we will be replenishing the entire liquor cabinet.

Only time I've had to travel was for training when I first started working for the state. You would have to travel up to the Center of the Universe (Phoenix) for classroom training. You could either take a state vehicle or drive yours and get reimbursed, I always took my truck because people love to call and complain if they see a gubment vehicle picking up a 12 pack at a grocery store, even if you are off the clock. They would reserve you a hotel room from Sunday night thru Thursday night and you work 40 hrs M-F with Friday being a 1/2 day to account for travel time. Also, we have to front the money for meals (within a set limit) and get reimbursed when you turn in your travel form along with your vehicle mileage. It really sucked.

Yeah, that sucks. When I drove for my current employer hotels were covered, and lunch and dinner were too. Meals sucks because I was in a department with a micromanaging dick wad who set specific limits per meal, including tips. Before he was in charge it was just a general "Try to keep the meal expenses below $40 a day." That was back in 2010-2012 times, so $40 a day was pretty solid. Also had a company card, so just had to do the paperwork.

The limits on how much liquor you can bring back into Canada vary based on how long you're out of the country and I always have trouble remembering what they are.

.67 / mile now. When I had local clients in my state I worked in a fuel card + $500/mo vehicle expenses. They didn’t manage my fuel. They only said “just don’t take a road trip for leisure and ur family and ur fine.”

high of 50* today. I have a clients car to get done today, so I’m glad it’s warm out

My last employer they did not care what I spent the fuel / alcohol anything. The one I’ve been with wine April of this year wants it at no more than $75 a day / no alcohol. (Obviously no problem there) if I want to fly to WA, I can. I just prefer not to because we’ll….its WA and more stress / anxiety for me to travel more. I have done plenty of travel before so it’s a pass for me unless I need to go (I try to keep it 1-2x a year)

I have not worked a job that provided an hourly wage or overtime since the 70s.

Given your profession that's kind of expected though. Certain jobs aren't ever hourly.

We're at $80/day Per diem. We can choose to get it paid on the check before the trip, which is kinda nice

You know who hasn't shown up in here for a while?

@Lovetrucks where are you at? How's that gorgeous Ram treating you? Any cool adventures with it lately? How's life going?

@APalmTree same for you. You've been absent a while. Everything going smooth? Cool stories to share?

@RichterScale and @Tripleconpanna you've both gotten quiet recently. You still alive and kicking?

@rons23 you still crankin' the tunes while knockin' the hell outta the fish?

@SwitchThrottle I know you said you weren't coming back, but I'm hoping you've changed your opinion?

Any other hooligans that used to play here that haven't been back in a bit? Tag 'em up!

I've got a NCCCO crane/rigging class coming up, down by @RainMan_PNW
Going down near LA later this year for some VEGA look down transducer training, looking forward to that one!

Plus we manage other remote hydros that require maintenance.

I haven't posted much because everything's been mostly negative lately and I don't like to bitch (unless it's sardonic humor) and bring everyone else down or tear jerk.
But I'm usually on here, monitoring.
