Stock, with a few cosmetic mods.
I think some tollbooth scofflaw in NYC just got busted with one of them cruising the ez pass lane for a real long period of time. Oh, and most certainly illegal.

You had think at this day and age, anything electronics can and will be hacked at one point or another.
Not if, just a matter of when.

I love that they have photos of usage for speed and red light cameras in their lifestyle photos, but if you scroll far enough it says

    "
    1. Is this street legal?

Our plates covers are intended for off-road use only. It's up to the buyer to research their local laws to determine if our covers are allowed on public roads. By purchasing any aftermarket performance product, the customer takes full responsibility for any use, and/or misuse of the product."

Then that begs the question: Why do you need to blur out your plates during off-road? If you are afraid of getting bent, you need something else than this to protect it.
Now, if you don't want people to film you during your off-road fail, that's a different story....

I could see this being useful for ppl who routinely take pics of their ride where the plate comes into view but they probably have a cosmetic plate or no plate at all.

I'm shocked that a state with as many automotive/safety restrictions as CA has is allowing digital plates to be legal.

I routinely remove plates when taking photos and videos of our products on trucks. It's not difficult and takes maybe 5 minutes at most if I'm not using a drill. Using this one a vehicle would make it way uglier for content. I'd rather remove it, hit the area with armor all and cleaner and start shooting.

We're in CA and I see them all the time. Just because it's electronic doesn't mean it's hackable. It might just be an LCD screen with 0 connectivity unless you plug it into something. Like those blinking keychains with your name that they have at tourist traps. I don't know for sure though.

Not to disagree, but if you think on the fundamental of how they program that thing, reverse that, there you go.
I am not saying it is easy, nor quickly done. It might take 10 years, but it is do-able. Nothing is completely proofed to be inaccessible.

True, and it looks like it has a wireless activation so that in itself is hackable.

Yeah, that kind of nails it. I wonder why CA DMV was short-sighted on this? Silicon Valley is only a 2.5 hour drive away... surely they could have consulted with some engineers

:stirthepot: Hackers have hacked Tesla's paywall to permanently use features that only Tesla can "open" up. Those new fancy Chinese IC's going into Tesla’s will potentially open up a control hack can of worms too.

    Too many, but not enough....
what a world we live in. Back in the day, if you wanted to blow a toll booth, you got your ass out of the car on the shoulder, a half mile from the booth, and put a towel over your plate. Spoiled kids these days..............

I'm sure they did and the engineers likely said "Awesome idea! And you can also make so it can transmit owner info, speed, and GPS location to law enforcement." Software engineers get paid good money to develop this stuff and if it gets hacked they get paid good money to update it. It's the greatest form of job security ever.

:stirthepot: I'm a Metrology Engineer, going on 45 years now. It seems that many Tesla owners are blinded by science and more into Elon's gimmicks that seem to appear daily. Ha!
AI is not your friend. Especially Chinese AI...
Hint. Elon is in bed with them. $$$$$$
Puts a new face on what's illegal.

Not to change topics here, but Elon hires hackers to try and hack his stuff. He holds a contest and whoever can hack it, wins a free Tesla, and a job.

But....does he hire Chinese Hackers (our enemy) that try to stop Elon's people trying hack their chips Ha!
On topic now.. defeating the tolls here will get you nothing but a hefty fine using a plate blackout. You are caught on candid camera. Hefty fine

I have no idea. I wish I was intelligent enough to be one of the hackers, but I would have no idea what to do and just end up cheating from the other guys
