Disappointed. 2022 Tundra double cab SR

There are several recalls on this model of vehicle, and it is quite confusing. I have here the most recent letter from Toyota which says a remedy for the recall XF5 is available at my dealer now (letter dated December 2023). When I called my dealer for the repair they were totally confused. As a matter of fact the service gentleman I spoke with over the phone just whistled, and said "Wow, I have never seen anything like that" referring to the number of recalls on this vehicle. It took him 5 days to get back to me to say they could fix it, but it still isn't clear.

It appears to me that Toyota is totally overwhelmed. I regret buying this truck. I am very very disappointed in Toyota and will consider any further purchases.This is my 4th Toyota truck, all bought new at local dealerships through the years. When I was younger I drove a Celica and also a Tercel for some years. As you see, a loyal customer.

My evaluation of the truck itself. It has much too many electronic safety devices which tend to make my drive more dangerous than improving safety. And it is hard to figure out all the controls. I have to admit, I am old school. The back seat is much too small, making it almost useless. All the safety controls and gadgets on the vehicule make it impossible to service the truck at my local garage. It forces me to go to the Toyota service center about an hour's drive away. There I have to wait for the repair, as Toyota offers no courtesy car even when the reason for my visit is totally Toyota's fault (recalls). A very frustrating experience altogether. Another sideline complaint... My dealer over the past couple of years has greatly expanded its show room and sales capacity. It is very impressive. But the service department remained the same.

I would say, don't lose hope just yet. A redesigned unit with new power plant and more electronics will bring growing pains with it. That laced with the return to an effective work force post covid lock down have compiled failures across the board. When I bought my 07 in 07, I had a laundry list of things that needed to be done, and issues came up during the first few years. For Example, electrical issues kept getting dropped off in random dark places, a water pump, a new drive shaft, new rear transmission shaft x3 it just kept leaking, ECM and TCM re-flashes as the transmission would slip in 1st gear and 15mph under 5k miles, Driver side and passenger side bed had to be stripped and repainted since the paint flaked off with running water on both sides. There are other things I don't remember, but at the time it was the brand-new Texas plant where the Tundra's were rolling off the assembly line. I've had my opinion with paint quality Japan vs the US, but that's another issue all together.

 

Welcome aboard! Sorry you seem to be disappointed with your poorly researched purchase. Seems many come on here now and complain about things they decided to purchase. You complain of the small back seat room, but you chose to buy the double cab and not the crew cab? You complain about the safety features that are driver selectable in most cases. Read your owners manual and learn how they work and how they can be turned off if you don't need or want that feature. The 2022 model was the initial offering for the brand new design of the Tundra, it's gonna have some growing pains and recalls to address them. Could have purchased a later year model and avoided many of them. Hopefully they get your truck sorted to your satisfaction and you can enjoy it.

 

Nice first post. If it is this bad what took so long the Troll Post? Sell it and move on. Maybe a Yaris fits your need.

Random thoughts: I been thinking of 3rd gen Tundras since they landed. Been reading and watching. It's normal to see some issues with a new model, but with this one, there's just too many issues for me. I'm still driving my '14 for now, and not planning on any changes just yet. The new Tundras have too much in the way of gee whiz electronics.

 

A hater could really use a "Dislike" button on you non 3rd Gen guys . They've cleaned up quite a few bugs/issues since the 22, trade in for 24.

 

traded my Gen1 4RNR for a Gen2 4RNR. Traded that for a Gen2 Tacoma which I traded for a Gen3 Tacoma - which runs circles around the Gen2 in every way. According pre Gen3 owners on TW I had made a colossal mistake. Eight years later I have no regret. Now have my Gen3 Tundra - and yes it has a few minor issues which don't amount to a hill of beans and Toyota is taking care of them. Love the truck and everything about it - in fact it is way better than my Gen3 Tacoma and gets better mpg. The ride is amazing and the basic bells and whistles I have work perfectly. Seems like a lot of owners just can't live without not having every option and comfort feature - luckily I'm not one of them.

Wondering about all these options - how many are installed while on the factory line and how many are added at Port. Seems like Toyota may want to see if Port installed options are the root of some of these issues.

 

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I am sorry about your issues, but this was the first model year of a completely brand new design, inside and out. AND every truck built in that model year was negatively affected by Covid and the supply chain issues. Later model years seem to have corrected the vast majority of those issues, so my advice is to trade it for something newer, or older. Either way, get out of the '22.
