Discounts on every day goods is a given. I get that. Fortunately my grandson doesn't have a clue that his generation is getting robbed. Meanwhile the Swedish and UK Defense Ministers are warning their folks to prep for WWIII against China, Russia, Iran, and N Korea by 2025. Maybe the CT can be militarized.....food for thought.

Back then we had our own supply chains. With everything. We won the last world war because of that. We weren't beholden to anyone back then.

True. Problem is many folks got stranded this past weekend. Not just EV rides of course. Lots of ICE's too. Lots! But, it does seem that Tesla didn't respond to well when people requested help through the "app". I get why, but that Tesla app can't be relied upon when things get a bit too cold it seems. No one is coming. Me, I would have stayed home unless an emergency at work. Unfortunately, Leo's and 1st responders have no choice. Props to them helping folks out the last few days.

Meanwhile, more than 7-in-10 working and lower-middle class Americans making $30,000 to $50,000 a year said they are not considering buying an EV, including 46 percent who said they are “not at all likely” to buy an EV.

Not to be a dick here, but usually that salary only goes so far with how they were brought up, and the mindset they have. EV’s are not for everyone, in every situation. I agree. However; I can happily say I’ve spent $0 on any maintenance on my Tesla in the 1.5 years I’ve had it. On an ice vehicle? Nope. Hell, in savings alone from not having to fuel up. Look how much I’ve spent on electricity in a YEAR.

I agree of course, but Hertz is selling 30% of their Tesla rentals due to "upkeep" issues. I get that too, but that is a big hit.

Damn good! Unfortunately so many of Tesla competitors aren't near as good. Rasmussen polls are a pretty good indicator of what folks are thinking now. Not knocking Tesla. But EV's in general are definitely becoming a hard sell. Especially how badly they did in the cold that's been widely reported from many sources.

Ya I get it. In extreme cases of subzero temps, you may use up to 40% more energy. The larger the battery, the more it’s going to take to heat it. Although, in traffic, “idling” it’s pretty much zero

Not so much as ev tires (although, weight does play a role in it) but the instant torque will cause those tires to wear out quickly if you’re continually hitting it. :anonymous:

That's pretty obtuse, IMO. I came from exactly that, or less, and I'm not limited by it. This whole notion that how you grow up determines everything you can do is silly. There are people who are in that situation that subscribe to that mentality because it removes the personal responsibility, and that let's them blame everyone/everything but themselves for the situation.

That said, in that income bracket, not wanting an EV has dick all to do with "how far you'll go" or any instilled mindset. It's the fact that making $30K-$50K you can't afford a $700 a month car payment on top of all the other expenses. The argument about the maintenance cost savings being less money overall is akin to a millionaire saying that making money is easy. Well sure, if you already have a lot of money then it is easy to make more because you can invest it, but if your every dollar goes toward daily needs you can't spare anything to invest and make that "easy" money. Same goes for the car. If you can't afford the upfront expense of the EV, it doesn't matter that the overall cost over the course of 10 years is less. You have to have that initial starting point to get in the door for it.

We’ve gone over this, and came from very similar upbringings; and you changed that- just like I did.
What I’m saying is, even if an EV was the same price as an ICE for the budget of the salary, they would still be geared towards ICE, in my opinion. Then again, 30-50k isn’t shit for most of us, and in country like Vietnam, you can probably live like a king but that’s good money out there.

Dang it! My Tessie left me stranded! I can’t drive it to work tomorrow morning.

    IMG_2973.jpg

    Oh wait….

    IMG_2972.jpg

I guess it doesn’t matter. ICE vehicles are subject to freezing rain.

Fun fact: one of these two can be scheduled to defrost from my phone at any programmed time. The other one will cause me to get up twenty minutes early to start my inevitably shitty day.

Actually, $50K is above average. Most people make less.

My biggest opposition to the EVs is the cost of a good one. If you could get an AWD Tesla with similar performance to a WRX for the same price as a WRX I'd be on it in a heartbeat. You can't though. I get that Teslas are ultra fast, but that matters so little to me for the price. You can get into an AWD fast WRX for $33K. Show me an EV that matches it's performance and range that isn't $20K more. EVs simply are not affordable for the average income.

Oh I get that. I’d like it too, but would not like their software compared to what I’m used to. Tesla is apparently working (there’s been a few photo leaks) on their $25k EV. I’ll see if I can find any

If they can pull it off in AWD with 320 miles of range then it'll be a viable comparison. I'm betting it'll be more like the Leaf from Nissan. A tiny, underpowered, and low range compact for urban use only. But I'm a cynic.
