There will be lots of stuff to clean up this spring. And lot's I'll just leave out in the woods too.

Kiddo is healing. She's fighting with some numbness in the left leg that we're trying to figure out, but otherwise pain is improving and PT is scheduled to start in a couple of weeks. Her BF finally had surgery Monday to set/pin his arm, so he's doing better on that front. Still haven't gotten any answers regarding the MRI on his knee other than it sounds like it might be a torn MCL, some micro fractures on the bottom of the femur, and possible some tearing of whatever holds the patella? We had actually brought her down to stay with him on Tuesday night, so she wasn't stuck at the house through no power and tons of snow...

Can you process the wood for burning? Campfire or fireplace if you have one?

Well that's good news that they are both on the mend. I'm sure she was glad for the change of scenery. Numbness sucks. I hope it's just temporary and not something with a pinched or damaged nerve. Props to you for keeping it all together. I'd be a nervous wreck with the last few weeks you've had.

I'll process the easy shit to reach for some outdoor firewood. Most of our 5 acres is wooded and sloped enough that accessing it isn't easy and not really worth the risk of trying to get to or drop the leaners. Alders are dangerous to cut when they are standing straight, much less when they are leaning or bent.

This has us looking (again, only this time I'm starting to wear down the wife a little more) at retrofitting a wood stove into the house. Lots of things to consider, but I think I can make one work without too much crazy effort. Also backup generator considerations. Comes down to us making the decision if we're going to stick with this place for the next 18 years or try to find a new spot to build. We've got 18 years here now, and we're looking more seriously at finally building a shop, then finishing out the basement as a separate living quarters (likely my MIL will end up there) which would entail some considerable dirt work and removing any trees that are still a risk of hitting the house to make room for a lower driveway to access the basement (I have a dirt path to it now that I will drive on only for about 9 months of the year).

Glad she was able to get away and hang w/him for a bit. One of the best ways to forget or mitigate your own pain and struggle is by helping someone else w/theirs

Just FYI... You should have that part by tomorrow (depending on weather); it was sent to the street address (not the PO BOX). I wasn't sure which one you'd prefer! Again, no rush on the project at all; just let me know if you think it's something you can work with or not...

Anyhow, stay safe w/the storms... We've got another wave of wind pushing through here that should end by 0300, but it may be pushing south of you.

are you looking for a wood stove solely as a backup source of heat? I put in a gas fireplace last month, and that thing fucking cranks... it was much cheaper and easier than a wood stove, but it does require 110v if you put in the blower (which is just a small metal fan, using minimal electricity and makes a huge difference in heat output), so that would require a small generator... my wife and i always wanted a wood burning fireplace, but when we moved no houses we liked had one, so i was going to put in a wood stove in our new house. Once we moved in and were here for about a month or two, we realized that it wasn't feasible because of the location it would have to be in the living room and the size of the footprint it would take up after building a platform and getting proper wall clearances. We always said gas fireplaces were stupid, but since it was our only option and it was relatively cheap, we gave it a shot. Boy were we wrong, this thing is amazing and everyone who has seen it, loves it. There's no mess or smell from burning wood (I love the smell, but apparently a lot of people hate it). I hit a button on the remote control and I have instant heat. I hit a button on the remote control and it's off with no residual heat and can leave the house with no worries, also don't have to worry about the kids burning themselves on a cast iron wood stove. I also live in the high desert and have zero sources for firewood, other than purchasing.

Yes - looking for a backup heat source. For me, it's a little bit of a "be prepared" thing (Boy Scout motto). It is rare we lose power for more than an hour or two, and the recent 16-hour outage was the longest we've encountered in the 18 years I can remember in this house. But it's still a reminder we aren't as prepared as we should be. And I like the idea of being independent of the grid if ultimately necessary...

When we built this house in 2005, we originally put in a free-standing gas stove in the living room that direct vented out the wall. It was OK, but left a lot to be desired - including it staining the side of the house (and window on the story above). The location in the living room wasn't ideal and it prevented us from putting a larger window in that wall which reduced the natural light. After a couple of years, we took it out and framed in a window and have a much more flexible layout in the living room now and much better lighting.

We are also out in the sticks, so natural gas is not an option. We have a 500gal propane tank that feeds our tankless water heater and our 5-burner cook top. I can go a long time on 500 gallons of propane when only heating hot water (provided I use a portable generator to run the tankless heater and the well pump) and cooking - we rarely go through more than 100 gallons in 6-8 months. But trying to use propane for a fireplace would put a bigger dent in that supply much faster (though still not without constant use for several months).

Looking at zero clearance wood burning units it looks like we might be able to work one into the room/house without too much difficulty, and it wouldn't look a whole lot different than what you have there.

OK folks - After snow, power outages, wind storms, and sub-freezing temperatures, I am finally getting caught up.
Everyone who has already received their orders will be getting an envelope in the mail (they will go out tomorrow) with the missing RMF slap now that I finally got proper ones in my hands. Those orders that are currently in the queue will get a slap in the order. Those should go out in the mail tomorrow as well (depending on the next weather event they say is going to hit us here the beginning of this week).

I'm glad I came across this thread as I had only seen pictures of the one with the top mount screw holes. I was going to make my own with underside mount and then I found this. Perfect. Sent payment and filled out form. Thanks!

Quick update - between snow storms, wind storms, and ice storms, the area around me has been a mess. The main E-W interstate that feeds most trucking into the area was shut down for several days, and so supplies were slow getting here.

Finally got the missing parts I needed to get the most recent orders wrapped up. I'll get tracking numbers on those before the end of the weekend, and they will be in the mail on Monday. Sorry for the delay.

The good news, however, is that I've had the printer running a bit and am getting closer on the Scosche/Magsafe adapter release. I still need to sit down and figure out exact pricing and details, etc., but I have been getting the parts printed for the first set of them.

I'm also working on a minor change to the front camera mount based on some research that will hopefully eliminate the need for the extra screws in the YotaLED plate. I've got all the parts I need to test it except the extra YotaLED plate (which is on the way).

Regarding the Platinum shifter trim switch panel - I'm still waiting on that part to get delivered now that things are thawing out around here...

We just moved this past May after almost 20 years in our last house. Moved to the country with 2 acres on a dead-end street. So quiet and peaceful. It was difficult leaving that house after all those years but you could literally see the area starting to decline. We definitely made the right choice. Had a whole house generator installed last week. Best investment for peace of mind!

Regarding the cam spacer, is the cylindrical protrusion supposed to key in the hole of the yota led plate?

yes. But you will need to open the hole in the Yota LED plate up a little.
It ensures that the camera is positioned as high up on the plate as possible and keys everything together more solidly.
