Unrealistic expectations has sure led him down the wrong path of ownership.

What expectations should a Gen2 Tundra owner have when purchasing a gen3?

In the context of his story he bought first then did the research of what he needed. Should have been the other way around.

Friends, I have the 2023 / 1794 Edition and it is the most remarkable vehicle I have ever seen in my 66 1/2 years on the planet. The only issue I had was the front wheel alignment was off pulling a little right. Other than that it is quiet, has a plethora of features and rides very smooth. My gas milage has gotten better around 18 / 19 average. Less when towing. I could push the mileage higher but using the shutoff feature while stopped. I am a little Leary about having a turbo charged engine but am changing the oil frequently and hoping that I wouldn't have to replace them before 200 K. I love this truck and everything about it. No wind noise, no rattles, smooth running and luxurious inside. The sound system is insane. Would buy another one without even looking at another truck if this one got wrecked. Zero Complaints....

I feel the same. Wish there were more vocal positive people on this forum! From what I can tell, the few bashing this truck are less than 1% of the population. The rest are just the quiet majority.

To be honest, I think a lot of this negative chatter is because the US Truck manufacturers are doing so poorly and their trucks are very unreliable that they have trolls slinging bad press about the Tundra. Quite frankly they are selling Tundras but the lots are full of Ram's, F150s and Silverado's. Have friends who have dropped more than on trans in the Silverado's before 50K. Look at how quickly Toyota resolved the limited number of waste gate issues. Yet consumer reports is still giving the truck a black eye over it. I have 17 k on my truck and unless something bad goes wrong in the next 50K miles this thing it utterly amazing.

So many shit birds with no Gen 3 on the forum. I too wonder about the the trolls. Clearly Reddit and Facebook point to this site so the internet is casting a wide funnel back to here.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my truck and couldn't imagine going backwards.

My 24 Platinum is my second Gen 3. Purchased my first one because I couldn't find/get everything I wanted when I bought it, and really needed to get away fro my Gladiator. The Platinum I have now have everything I originally wanted. Couldn't be happier with either of them or any of my Tundras for that matter (I've had 4 total). Why? because when my battery died in my 2017, their free roadside assistance came and helped me. When I was having weird gauge issues in my 22 Tundra, they flashed my truck with the fix AND called me back in a week to see if it was fixed. Whenever there's an issue like a recall or something, they're on it. If I were to say anything that they need, it would be communicate more with the dealers. I learn stuff on here that when I mention it to the techs that have no idea what I'm saying until they look at what I'm telling them. I currently have no interest in buying or driving anything else. I've put up with waaayyy too much nonsense from other makes/dealers.

Edit: As far as driving and owning the truck itself, there are many nanny annoyances. All vehicles now have 'em. Turn off what you can and deal with the ones you can't. Life is like that. Mine is a hybrid which there's no way to turn off the auto stop/start. After owning it for 3 hours I thought - duh! that's the whole point of owning a hybrid!

Some of you have missed my points, despite the fact I'm trying to help you. It's easier to attack my intelligence (I have a 138 IQ and MANY patents) or write me off as someone who doesn't know how to shop for a vehicle or simply failed to do my homework. I could address each of your questions and demonstrate YOU don't know what you are talking about but I won't waste the Forum's time. The 2024 has virtually no semblance to the prior generation quality. Period. I spent 40yrs proudly test driving and owning toyota trucks. I've built engines for them, transmissions, axles, custom suspension, steering, custom AC, and tons of body work. I even built a class 7S race truck. Yeah, I'm a big dummy for wanting another Tundra. I researched specs vs other trucks, prices, AVAILABILITY, I test drove them to the point I thought the dealer might report the vehicle stolen. I drove hundreds of miles just to test a couple of them 2 states away. Gimme a break. The surprises im realizing as a new owner of a 2024 have been shocking.

After 3 months and 5000 miles, here's what I can highlight.

This week I finally figured out how to change the FM radio station. Not that I didn't almost have a number of accidents trying to figure it out in the intended touch screen menus while driving. I've attempted over and over. I watched online tutorials (they were wrong) I spent a lot of time with the manuals before I learned the secret. WHY? What were they thinking? I've rented 10 other vehicles in that time with zero problems.

The lights are completely fantastic at night, as long as you don't have to slow down and turn. The cutoff of the field of illumination is so sharp, there's literally no light whatsoever in the direction of your turn. There are big ditches on either side of my country driveway. I have to guesstimate where the driveway is and proceed on faith, and that's my most familiar 90 degree turn. Much worse in parking lots or the clearly unintended off road situation. I added ditch lights to help my 2016 Tundra and it wasn't half this bad. It's 100% dark 45 degrees from the forward direction of the headlights.

I have to retry connecting my phone 3 or 4 times every time I get in the vehicle before it actually works. Never a problem in any other vehicle. That's when I WANT it to connect. I use an Android for personal and an iPhone for work, so sometimes I want the iPhone to connect. When i DON'T want my Android to connect. Then it will try. It doesn't matter which device is selected as my primary. If I power down the android or turn its Bluetooth off, my truck turns it back on! I have to make the vehicle forget my android altogether if I don't want the truck to turn it on. I paid for a lot of computer chips in a chip shortage to make my truck do crap like this.

The fit and finish are in a league not resembling prior generation toyota vehicles in general. Body panels do not match neatly and some trim pieces look like a temporary or aftermarket setup. The rockers under the doors look like they are missing trim parts or something. Interior feels like really cheap plastic. I led an R&D group for automotive interiors, working for a major manufacturer you all know. I am qualified to recognize the difference from the prior gen Toyota trucks.

I love the range of the big tank. I drove from Johnson City TN to Cleveland OH on one tank last week. I've only burned 92 or 93 octane so far. Hoping the mileage catches up to the published ratings at some point but it's still a little better than my 2016 Tundra's 5.7L V8 with 125k miles.

After 3 months I was able to order my 2nd key fob yesterday. The dealer will program it for me hopefully this weekend.

One comment said something like im too cheap or scared of my wife so I wont buy the tow hooks or skid plate ive been ranting about. Yeah, my wife manages our finances. I work 7 days/wk, often till wee hours, incl holidays and vacation. After financing a 24 Tundra that cost nearly twice what my Last Tundra cost, we don't have thousands in cash to start buying the parts Toyota FORGOT. Basic stuff like skid plate protection and tow points. Bumper, skid plate, tow hooks and turning lights are a $2000 - $3000 investment on top of the $60,000 I paid for a white basic model SR5.

Now that I'm getting acclimated to the new truck, I realize I love how it looks. Once the public starts figuring out its nowhere near the legendary quality of prior Tundras, that will wear off. Its nice to flaunt that i could afford $60K but after 40yrs of advocating for, working on, building and driving Toyota trucks, I regret to say I'm finally done. If I can find a truck with practical off road capability, reasonable power, fantastic durability, comfortable seat and good visibility while driving, without 10s of thousands in unecessary infotainment crap, I'm ready to switch. Thats not crazy or weird. Its why we've all loved Toyotas until now. Skid plates, tow hooks mandatory, locking hubs and a Posi clutch-pack carrier would be nice. Posis or a locker (without a bloated off road package) allow some advanced driving techniques in off road or extreme weather conditions. ...and if only the truck could stop beeping at me, giving me error messages, asking for passwords and turning on my electronic devices without my permission. It's supposed to be a darned TRUCK. Not a cyber nanny.

I used the Baja designs squadron lights on my last Tundra as ditch lights. They were mounted from the hood hinges. Neat fit and I found an illuminated switch marked "ditch lights" that popped into a factory knockout in the dash. They blocked some of the drivers' view ahead of my factory towing mirrors but I was satisfied with the durability and function. I'd appreciate if someone has a recommendation for the 2024. There's no visibility to spare, so im thinking of under mirror or some other type of concealed mount for ditch lights or cornering lamps.

After reading through most of this thread I'm afraid to ask if I should continue with the planned purchase of my 1794 soon to be delivered. I need to move out of my very reliable '09 Titan at 77k miles mostly because I need the new tech especially the proximity sensors, blind sport monitoring, and backup camera and to cover me as probably my last truck for the next 10-15 years.

I figured out how to tune the radio at less than 5000 miles. Does that mean my IQ is 139? Maybe we could patent the "hey toyota" method?

I rarely say "hey toyota" since you can just say "tune to 92.5 FM" and it magically does it. I'll pay attention next time for voice changes. And since both methods work, maybe we could get two patents?

OK. Enough salt. I'll lighten up. You guys are funny and I can laugh at myself. My 2024 purchase wasn't the first time I was blinded by love.

Hey, PGW85706, make your own decision about the 1794. I'm sharing MY point of view about the things I've learned in the first 5000. You may be delighted with the 1794 but be sure to do your homework. Some of us care more about one thing than another. I've tried to carefully qualify my background the context of my comments to be helpful. I hope by the passion of my prose, you can judge the things I care about in a truck. If you are like minded, you may find my observations helpful. From this thread, you can see we differ on the things to be improved for 2025.

SoapDodger - I share most of your view points. I am a mechanic, a shop owner, and I wouldn't consider anything else when I bought this Tundra. I have a fleet of 200k-300k toyotas, but sometimes we go long distances with the boat - and I just needed a newer Toyota. Then, after a few disappointing months, I was regretting this Tundra. The interior was cheaper, the wiring harness is micro-diameter, the electronics were glitchy.
So I went to the Chevy dealership and drove a Silverado. Holy crap - it was so inferior to a Toyota.

Old Toyota doesn't exist. But it's still a better truck than Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Dodge.

    Lots of stuff!
I haven’t tried the voice commands on the Tundra but do use it on the VW ID.4 and it is really good. You can do everything with the voice commands. Like turn on the seat heater or change the radio. The target audience for the ID.4 wouldn’t be the same as those looking for a truck.

If it actually worked, @Eurodriver could say “Hey Toyota, take me to the wild boar”

But it would probably just eject the engine and flip on its side!

Thx jeffcoseo. I appreciate the perspective from someone who knows what they're talking about. I've done some electronics engineering and built harnesses for some off road trucks and bikes. I like your comments on wire gage. In my industry, supply chain issues have created massive challenges for everyone. This has to be much worse for the complexity auto makers must manage. In their defense, Toyota managed to deliver a 24 Tundra with attributes that can be loved in some way by many of us. I'm hoping our collective voice will help others with their buying decision and be respected enough to affect a course correction by the legendary truck manufacturer we've learned to revere.

I wear rose-colored glasses when I speak about my 1st gen Tacoma, 3rd gen 4Runner, and 4th gen 4runner. Those trucks were designed by saints who wore halos. 1969 Camaro and 1972 Road Runner 440 were softly dropped out of heaven.

Doesn't matter. You can't buy any of those new from the dealership.

We can work with this Tundra, the most technologically advanced pickup in history. And yes - it does have some low-lights along the way. Or ... shop around... the Tundra still wins against all 1/2 Ton trucks. In my opinion.
