Ive searched my book and this Forum and can't find my answer. My previous 4x4s were both manual trans and I could shift in 4L range and drive easily to 20-25 MPH. I just noticed that the '23 Tundra when in 4L stays in 1st gear only. Is that the norm? I seem to remember old GM 4x4s we had a work many moons ago shifting in 4L range with an Auto trans. Thx

It’ll shift into other gears when in 4L. Are you selecting S1 gear? If you do that it won’t shift out of 1st.

Nope. In Drive/Norm. No Crawl or Hill Decent turned on. Reved it over 2000 rpm and it never shifted. Now Im wondering about 4H. Gotta go test.

It will hold gear much higher than 2,000rpm in 4Lo on all my vehicles. Give it some gas and see what the shift point actually is.

Yep, shift is consistently at 3000~3500 rpm for all gears. It’ll get up to the speeds you want.

Thanks All - @xc_tc @PapaDave418 @KNABORES for responding. That was it! Uses a different shift program. It hit 2nd a little above 3000 and 3rd near 4000. A real head banger when it slams in!! Thanks again.

    Question for y’all,
When in low range 4L I cannot manually go to 1st gear (for downhill crawling), the lowest it’ll go is 2nd.
Can any of you confirm that for me in your truck?

I’m talking about starting in 1st gear to go down a cliff. I manually try to put it in 1st gear but the lowest it’ll go is 2nd gear 4low.
Is y’all’s the same? Can you set yours to 1st gear in 4low?

That’s for confirming, kind of relieved but also wish we did have 1st gear for the rough downhill stuff.

Wise move, especially that gen3 axles are tripod ones.

Not entirely accurate. The TRD OR/Pro axles are double offset.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to go 20-25 mph in 4Lo.

Also will be a handy noise maker for when your turbine spindles finally seize up.

Which should be sometime this year. Please have the missus (or hubby, I dunno) verify there are sufficient quantities of cocoa in the larder in advance of said disaster.

When you pull the shifter to the left, Sport mode, the gear shown on the dash is not the gear it’s in. It IS in 1st starting out and will only go up to the gear shown unless you shift it higher. Works the same in regular 2wd driving. Might be different with the full digital dash. That might have an actual gear position indicator.
