I recently purchased a 2018 Double Cab. I was in the process of buying it as a nasty storm was quickly approaching so I did a quick check of the frame from the sides, engine fluids, and interior. Long story short I crawl under it and discover that the skid plate is not installed.
Can anyone point me in the right direction where to purchase one along with the hardware besides directly from Toyota? They looked to be stupidly expensive there.

Unless it was a TRD Off Road or TRD Pro, it never had a skid plate. Those wheels look like the steelies, they would have been replaced with an Off Road package, so you're not actually missing anything. If you want to add the basic stock one that came on the TRD off roads, you can probably find one pretty cheap in your preferred classifieds. Be warned, the basic skid blocks access to the oil filter so you need to remove it for each oil change, and it's rather thin. The TRD Pro skid is thicker and has an access door for the filter. Again, best bet if you are on a budget will be buying used, as most new ones either Pro or aftermarket will be over $300.

It's an SR5. My last truck was also an SR5 and had one.

The SR5 is the trim. The skid plate would have been part of the TRD Off Road Package. That truck in the picture doesn't have that package, so it never had the skid.

    Pic for attention...not my truck.
My 2 wheel drive 08 had one of these so I was thinking the 18 would.

That is the same front skid that my '18 platinum has, but my son's '15 SR5 did not come with one. You can find them for about $140-150 online, but they are a pain in the ass that has to be removed with every oil/filter change. I would spend a little more on something with access doors. RCI or TRD skid.

I'm not sure if the 2nd gen trucks had the skids locked in a package like the 2.5 gens do but, the point stands, that 2018 did not come with a skid. Was your '08 a Rock Warrior, or TRD Off Road?

Being an SR5 doesn't exclude it being a TRD Off Road. You can get an SR5 TRD Off Road (I had one), a Limited TRD Off Road, etc. TRD Off Road is a package so it can be on many trims and the truck is still stock.

Definitely not equipped with the TRD package.

Must have been a change they made on later model years, then. Still, the basic plate on the 2.5 gen is very thin and won't offer much protection. There are loads of aftermarket skids or the TRD Pro skid that will provide more coverage, be more robust, and offer the oil filter door/hatch to make maintenance simpler.

It really doesn’t make much difference, but my 2018 came with the basic black sheetmetal skid. CrewMax Platinum, and definitely a NON-TRD package. Black shocks, no stickers.

To the OP’s question; I’d use an OEM one if I could get it for free. If money is leaving your pocket, I’d recommend an RCI. Much nicer when it’s time to change the oil and it might actually do its job if you hit something!

Is the white truck pictured the one that you bought? If so, that is a Crew Max, not a double cab. Anyway, I recommend going with the RCI skid plate.

Someone recently posted a TRD knock off skid plate they got for $200 that looked well made. Don’t recall who posted it.

TRD Offroad skid is made of beer cans. Essentially it is a dust shield. Buy RCI steel one. I have it one my Tundra and love it (besides it all rusted in 2 years in New England and I had to fix it and repair). I think it is even better than alu TRD PRO on wife's Sequoia.

It's probably worth mentioning, while on the topic of skid plates, a full engine/transmission/cat protection system from @Talon2006 would be a good idea.

Living in New England, why didn’t you opt for the aluminum RCI? I’m in the PNW and mine still looks perfect (minus a few scuffs) more than 2 years and 60k miles later. I just inspected it when I dropped it for my trans service a few weeks ago. Aluminum was a bit more money, but less weight and longer lasting in the harsh elements.

Yeah, my 2018 (2wd with TRD Off-Road Package) came with engine and tank skid plates.

I'm offroading, I bent even RCI steel skid plate. When I was offroading in my Volvo wagon (well, trying to) I had to take out its alu skid plate and hammer it flat almost every time it was in the woods. It is about as thick as TRD PRO skid plate, maybe tad thicker.

No, those are aluminum wheels available on some models. I found a set for my 2018 and replaced the TRD off-road wheels with these:

Aha. I see your point there. Worth noting, the RCI aluminum model is 1/4” thick. Not saying it can’t be damaged, but you’re gonna be doing something really cool or really dumb!

Among my 3 vehicles I have 2 alu skids and 1 steel. So far in the bushes I prefer steel hands down. In fact my Tundra has steel all the way up to the transfer case including, and it can winch high-centered self through the muddy harvested forest, taking abuse from boulders and stumps with nothing gone or broken. Well, RCI I did manage to bent, yes. It can be made of a thicker sheet, yes, like 10GA.

I may need to upgrade tank skid to steel as well.

Also aluminum corrodes as hell in our salty winters. Wife's Sequoia has alu cat shields for about a year, they started to do that in the places where a crappy powder coat is gone.

The strength between the RCI alum and steel are very close due to the increased thickness used for the aluminum. The real advantage of steel is it slides on rocks easier - downsides are weight and corrosion. I’ve beat on my alum RCI skids and they’ve held up well.

It had the sheet metal one. Oil change place probably forgot to put it back on. Co Parts salvage yard or ebay if you want on. Mine was missing one screw and plastic insert which I replaced. I would call it more of a grass guard. I did install a Talon trans and aft cat shield as my truck had original cats still on and wanted to keep it that way. I rarely leave the roadside with it.

I do believe Toyota calls the sheet metal version a “splash” guard rather than a skid.

"Engine Skid Plate, Fuel Tank Skid Plate" is what is listed on my door sticker (post #21).
