obviously, we have different perceptions of shortchanged, which is fine. you seem to think its a total shit show and I think its a nice truck and worthy of the next gen tundra model.

so, explain what in your eyes the mid-sized tacoma model has that makes it look like to you the tundra engineers shortchanged the tundra full-size. Mid size is typically geared for more off-roading since they (or at least were) smaller and can fit more places, full-size are geared towards hauling and towing within the 1/2 ton platform limitations, so what else is on your list?

it has higher payload, higher towing, rides better, hauls better, tows better, has way more features, gets better MPG, emissions are lower, has more HP, more torque, lower torque peak, more options for bed length and cab configs, hybrid option, more gear in the trans, than the outgoing model, whats missing besides tow hooks for a toyota truck.

I bought an F-150 and still think the 3rd Gen Tundra is a nice truck.

Had Toyota had this engine when I replaced my Tacoma in 2018, I probably would have gone Tundra and never looked back. MPGs are what kept me away from the 5.7 since I drive 22k miles/year. Instead, at the time Ford's EcoBoost was the answer. This time around, it really just came down to being accustomed to some traits of the Fords that the Tundra doesn't have that I didn't want to give up.

    totally understandable and reasonable

Im not a MPG guy, but my 2016 5.7 was a total pig, this one gets a ton better which is a side benefit for me.

I like sport+ with AVS and the boost response, they set that up well when you want to have a little fun, steering is weighed nice in that setting as well as are the shocks.

I don't worry too much about it, but I remember at the time the EPA combined number was 6 MPG apart between the two trucks, so I was talking 35 extra gallons of fuel per month.

My work commute is rural roads without much stop and go so I don't usually drive in a very spirited way. I've only really put my foot down in this PowerBoost a couple times, but boy is it fast. Motortrend got a 5.3 second 0-60, Car and Driver got 5.4. In the 80s, those were Lamborghini Countach numbers. It's amazing how far things have come.

When my PB is in sport mode it behaves at a stop at idle like it is straining at a leash at all times and will keep spinning into 3rd when I floor it. I don't do it often as fuel economy sinks down to below what I got on my 09 5.7 in that mode. Even not driving crazy you can almost see the needle move as you watch. But it's quite a feeling.

It is most certainly as fast or a bit quicker than my fat booty 2016 Challenger RT 6 speed. Both by feel and by the numbers.

I just find it interesting that Toyota apparently couldn't meet CAFE with the 5.7 when they only sell 125k Tundras a year. Vs Ford, Ram and GMC, which pretty much only sell trucks these days.

I've never tried sport in 2WD - mine switches to 4A automatically when I put it in sport mode so I'd have to change it back. 600 ft lbs of torque can definitely make for traction issues.

Rams v8 is cut as well, its all going that way, ford doesn't offer a large V8 either .

well see what GM does with the 6.2 in the next few years

not saying I like it, I was always a V8 fan, but it is what it is. The upside is these newer boosted motors have a ton of power and torque more than the V8s did with even lower torque peaks

I’ve posted before, but replaced my 2017 F150 EcoBoost which had 3 engine rebuilds (2 under warranty) plus numerous other issues. NHTSA lists 15 recalls, 665 complaints, and 300+ mfg communications (SB, etc). Seriously? Quality is not Job 1 there… nor Job 2.

And my FIL's friend acted surprised when I chose not to buy his 2017 EcoBoost.

My understanding is that they don’t want to pay the penalties.
Sometimes its easier to just pay the penalties and retain your market share.

    https://www.reuters.com/business/au...million-us-fuel-economy-penalties-2023-06-02/

Toyota is great business company. Their stock is consistent. Its consistent because of activities like moving the mid and full size Truck and SUV platforms to the same platform. Efficiency and profitable. It was a business move. Shareholders love this kind of stuff. IMO Sure - they could have included the V8 option and kept that group of loyal owners happy for a few more years. But when Toyota overall went with that platform direction, and then you have new "left wing" engineers in charge who went to such extremes (the list is huge) to meet mpg with the Tundra – there is no way the venerable 5.7 V8 was going to be even a passing thought.

Its all like a big Joke anyway. The way they calculate mileage estimates isnt real life conditions, and many owners of these Tundras just end up reversing any MPG gains buy jacking them up and or taking off the MPG compliant stock tires.

Also I can tell you that the family member that switched his F150 3.5 Limited for the GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2 liter engine, is loving it and he puts a lot mileage on his rides. If he found out they were getting rid of that engine he would not be happy.

This thread seems to be a catch all truck thread, so here it goes:

Anyone have any experience with a Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel? I am taking a very seriously look at them and so far I can't find a single owner that doesn't love them. The ONLY issue i have come across is that they tend to get hot towing, which is something I've already battled with my F150 Ecoboost and become accustom to compensating for.

Literally everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, who I have talked to that has one is like, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Problem is my trailer is a bit on the big side for a mid-sized truck but I was already looking for smaller trailers before I got this idea.

I will shed my 2 cents on the gladiator as I have now moved from managing ford shops to everything that is Stellantis (jeep included). The 3.0 eco first gen is one of the worst motors ever built, constant high pressure pump issues (recalls issued on all 3.0 now). I literally, hand to god just finished up our 2nd gladiator 3.0 motor today (have pics to prove). They are leaky bastards as well. Also if you are going manual there is now a recall on the clutch assembly (19a I believe). With all these massive recalls they are on a “parts no eta status” to which you can only get 3 a week sent to your shop, leaving many grenaded units taken up my back lot.
Now as far as simply power, ruggedness and the “jeep thing” pretty awesome and sought after.

*** remember I came from ford, am a former Toyota tech and now work at dodge lol. So not too partial just had overwhelming good luck with Toyotas.

    hope that helps

I second this… 10 speed was a co development with GM products and it too has suffered massive recalls for the transmission. Which of course ford tells you to throw a valve body in first to “fix it” then reprogram only to have the vehicle come back needed a full rebuild or now mainly a new black box.

I miss the 6 speed ford I had in my power stroke myself

the Gladiator Diesels that are shipping have had the recalls done on the CP4 AFAIK. They were on stop sale so any units in transit to dealer now are updated.

Also, I heard the 3rd gen EcoD has been a pretty reliable motor. I am well aware of the faults of the 2015-2019 Ecodiesel. I test drove one back in early 2015 and decided to go with my Ecoboost instead. I also had a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD with the older 2.8L VM Motori motor so I kept a pretty close eye on the 3.0 Ecodiesel. I have not heard a bad word about this latest gen that is in the Gladiator besides the CP4 pump issue.

Plus it comes with a 5 year/100k mile warranty so I can leave it in the shop if I have to. If I really need to go anywhere I will catch an uber.

Did you actually love it? Im genuinely asking because I am about ready to pull the trigger.

Jeep is offering 15% off MSRP on top of whatever the dealers are doing to clear out 2023's. So $66k trucks are listed for 51k right now.

Well sir you are one of a million people that understands dropping a vehicle off for service as that is most certainly not normal so hats off to you for being a good customer! Yes the stop sales are still a pain to deal with and it depends on build date actually as I still have zero mile units awaiting certain recalls as take the clutch 19a recall has changed 3 times already and as recent as 12-16 to where the recall parts changed and went from available to order to……. You guessed it no eta. (Now this only effects a weird gap of wranglers and gladiators to which some Benefit I can make them happy!!)

again I have no hatred towards gladiators and I see them dolled up everyday and wow they are sexy!

** side note I will say the 3.0 is 10x better than 3.6 and it keeps getting worse

I had my Ecoboost blow up on me in July of 2022.(Before anyone judges, it was my own fault, I had it tuned by some questionable tuners and towed with it >10000 miles in some of the harshest environments in the US).

I sat around for a month just trying to decide whether I should replace the motor, and then it was another 2 months before the new motor was delivered and installed. I got my truck back in late September.

Maybe I am weird, but I can deal with that stuff.

Again that’s awesome man, makes us service people just want to take of people like you that much more! In my case a random “loaner” would have appeared that may have not been there for all the a**hole customers lol.

Also one of my advisors blew up his eco for the same thing towing from lake Powell so I feel you there on the tune!!

When the new motor went in they tried to start it and it ran like crap and they got a bunch of fuel pressure codes. Turned out the original hpfp was bad so they replaced. So the though is the hpfp failed and caused the motor to go lean.

The scary thing about the whole situation was that the truck ran EXACTLY the same after the motor replacement as it was up the the second the rod went through the block. It never indicated anything was wrong. No knock or anything. Smooth as butter and then, bang! So its slightly aggravating that there was not a difference.

And dont get me wrong, both engines ran great. Its more that there was no warning that freaks me out. But ive put another 4k miles towing on the new motor and its solid.

Still haven't drove in sport mode yet ... Normal seems more than enough. Eco on road trips is fine as well but do like the idea of an 'Italian tune-up' per the car care nut and don't drive too conservative as it's actually worse on engine in the long run.
