Watching westerns was something pops and I used to do when he was on earth.

I didn’t think I’d ever like them when I was a child but man some honesty and integrity was in those shows. They have some of the best lines of any modern movies I’ve watched.

are you a fan of westerns?

Grew up on some. My Dad was a John Wayne fan, and I like lots of Eastwood's spaghetti westerns.

My wife and I like them, but we watch other stuff, too.
All the Clint Eastwoods...Spaghetti westerns, High Plains Drifter, Unforgiven, etc.; 3:10 to Yuma (original and remake), Magnificent Seven, True Grit (really like the remake).

Grew up on John Wayne and Clint Eastwood with my dad. Think I’m gonna flip on some Rio Bravo tonight once the kids go down.

Oh, a couple untraditional as Westerns, that I still think are good, if you haven't seen them...
Quigley Down Under - 80s, Tom Selleck is a sharpshooter, takes a job in Australia.
News of the World - Tom Hanks is a Confederate vet in Texas, just travels town to town reading recent newspapers for change, gets caught up in doing the right thing. Little slower, but well done.

No mention of Blazing Saddles yet?

Mom was a big John Wayne fan, so I saw a lot of that growing up. My favorites John Wayne movie is and always has been Big Jake.

Our TV also saw a healthy dose of The Rifleman, Bonanza, and Gunsmoke too.

As for Clint Eastwood... how many others here liked Paint Your Wagon? I'm not big into musical style movies, but I liked that one. Lee Marvin as Ben Rumson is a hoot! And Clint has a few sly, funny lines in there as well.

If you're into less serious comedy/western spoofs, Rustler's Rhapsody was entertaining. It had some decent talent in it; Tom Berenger, Andy Griffith, Patrick Wayne, Marilou Henner, Sela Ward.

If you want a comedy western, have you seen "The Villain" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kirk Douglas?

For comedy Western, I agree on 'Support your Local Sheriff', and there was also 'They Call me Trinity' I remember being pretty good.

As a Humphrey Bogart fan, I have to throw out "Treasure of the Sierra Madre". A dark tale of greed, madness, treachery and murder. The ending was censored for being too graphically violent at the time.

The Cowboys was my favorite when I was a kid. Every time I see Bruce Dern in a movie. I remember that A-hole killed John Wayne.

Sat my boys down to watch it when they were young and they said it's one of their favorite westerns now.

Can't believe none of you "girls" haven't called out Lonesome Dove! One of the best out there watching Duvall do his thing.
    upload_2024-1-15_19-12-54.png

I've read that they once tried to make Streets of Laredo with John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart. Stewart being the McCrea character. Now that would have been interesting.
    upload_2024-1-15_19-21-58.png

Speaking of the MAN's MAN Jimmy Stewart you can't say you're a western fan if you haven't seen "The Far Country", "The Naked Spur", "Bend of the River". He always wore the same hat and rode the same horse.
    https://youtu.be/OA1pcNFRhXY?si=AC7ercoZGOOvxS7t

Then there's the all time favorite.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Then you got John Fords Cavalry trilogy.

You guys catch up on these then we'll talk partners... :quickdraw:

While we're at it, we can talk about one of the greatest western stars in my humble opinion.
    Ben Johnson.
He was a real cowboy who was making money as a wrangler for John Ford production and Ford saw him jump in front of a runaway horse and stopped him from hurting himself. Ford started putting him in bit roles. Johnson said he was a terrible actor, he always just played himself.

He was in a Bonanza episode, I always thought it was a pilot for a failed spin off but can't recall the name of the episode. In it there's a scene where Johnson is trying to get across the ranch and he's running two horses. The premise was that he'd swap horse for a fresh one to keep speed up. He did the swap, at full speed, himself! Wasn't a stunt man because he was a stunt man!

Sorry guys, touched a nerve. I love the old westerns, they can't make them like they use to.

I was born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s, and have a distinct memory of being laughed at in school haha

We had one big old box tv with no channels unless you count the two fuzzy ones that barely came in in weird colors with ants crawling all over them.

So nothing to do in winter I’d watch my Pop’s VHS tapes all season long.

Elementary teacher asked everyone what their favorite cartoon is to make a point and called on me first. I didn’t know what to say so I said, “Clint Eastwood?” and everyone laughed at me haha. Good times :)

Ed Harris and Vigo Mortenson as “the good guys”. Jeremy irons as the villain. Renee Zelwegger as the leading lady. Pretty realistic gun play and lots of tough hand old western interactions. All great performances. Some great quotable lines in it too.
