Glad she is ok. It really is one of the worst things to hear as a parent.

I’ve spent WAY too much time the past two weeks researching crash test methods, how vehicles are designed to protect the occupants (often at the expense of the vehicle), designs of reinforcement, crumple zones, kinetic energy absorption, etc. I know that people complain about how much damage happens from seemingly “minor” crashes but there’s good engineering behind why, and the safety of the occupants as demonstrated in carefully designed and conducted crash tests has been a driving factor in those engineering changes.

My daughter (same one) and wife were in a car accident in 2018 while my daughter was learning to drive. They were in the same Forester actually, going about 20-25 mph, and a girl pulled out in front of them turning the other direction. The front of the Forester looked similar to your daughter’s car - airbags didn’t deploy but it definitely smashed the front up. The insurance company elected to repair it (likely because the car was less than a year old at that time) - the total repair bill was over $17k.

This past New Year (2023 NYD about 1am) that same daughter was hit by a drunk driver when he ran a red light. He hit the front passenger side of her 2011 Subaru Impreza at about 35 mph and ripped the front bumper off, damaged the front fender, bent the hood, etc. We were able to drive the car home from the accident, but the insurance company totaled it out after appraising the damage.
