    What’s wrong with stock?
Took my 22 in for the warranty work and recalls. I asked them to order the parts for the repair as I didn’t want to leave the truck twice. They told me they couldn’t do anything unless a tech checked it out. So I reluctantly left the truck. This was the outcome:

    1. They ordered new fog lights as water as getting in.
    2. The tonneau cover repair was done. We’ll see if it leaks or not.
    3. The service campaign for the E-Brake as completed.
    4. A new seat panel was ordered.
    5. Gas leak - more on this in a second.

I understand that I will have to return for the fog lights and seat panel (warranty) as the parts need to be ordered. What gets me is how they handled or didn’t the repair of the gas leak recall. This is what I was told:

    1. They couldn’t check if it needed the fix because I had a full tank of gas.
    2. I have to reschedule for the repair when I have less than 1/4 tank of gas.
    3. They will then do the temporary fix and order parts after for the permanent repair.
    4. The permanent repair can only be done after the interim repair is complete.

Does #4 sound right. It’s like putting a band-aid on a broken arm and coming in a week later to put on the cast. I doubled down a repeated that I will only be bringing the truck in once for the repair.

I know vehicles have changed a lot since i started working on them in the 70’s. But can’t the final repair be completed without the interim done?

    Lots of stuff!
I feel your pain, I am going to take mine in soon and I am looking forward to the SA just not giving a damn. I don't know why service has degraded so much? Sort of like we are living in the COVID aftermath and haven't recovered. Just blame the crap service on COVID and move on!

I fully expect them to tell me that they can't work on my truck because it has a skid plate on it.

It's my understanding that the permanent fix is a completely re-designed and re-routed fuel line. So, IMO, there's no reason the temporary fix has to be done, if you're willing to wait for the permanent fix to be available.

Your dealer is lying to you. The fuel line recall is a RECALL. It isn't up to the discretion of the tech. Toyota and NHTSA have stated to get it done, so it needs done. If you make an appointment then they should've ordered the parts. The dealer has 0 reasons not to have the parts ready to go if you made an appointment. They also should have warned you to have the tank closer to empty. It's a heavy tank. I understand them not wanting to take the tank down if it was full, but otherwise they absolutely should've done the temp fix without pushback.

They also can't order parts for the permanent repair because they don't exist yet. Currently summer is the estimate. If the permanent fix is a new line, I see no reason why the temp fix would have to be done prior (but you should do it anyway).

Maybe they only meant the fog light/seat plastic, but I was reading it as they had to check the fuel line before doing the recall work. So I can concede that I suppose, but technically I'm still not wrong since they can't order the permanent fix yet.

    To me:
    1. They couldn’t check if it needed the fix because I had a full tank of gas.
Means they wanted to confirm the fix was needed. It's an open recall so it's needed. Maybe they had the parts ready and just didn't want to lower a full gas tank. But if they hadn't ordered the parts yet?

I really don't think the temp fix is required prior to the permanent fix either, but since we haven't seen the official permanent fix yet it's hard agree or disagree. Logically, if someone waited, would they require an install of the protector kit on the fuel line, just to replace the fuel line? Basically I think points 1, 3, and 4 are all false.

I have both remedies in my Toyota app. Does not indicate on final fix remedy that the interim has to be done prior to final. I will have to check with local dealer but they might say something similar to the above just to add hours to service dept bottom line. Don't know but just guessing but why go in twice?
