In reality most people don’t need a truck so perhaps that is the answer. No one buys a truck, or changed a truck to save money on fuel.

Trucks used to be a out the cheapest nice vehicles you could own due to low depreciation even with higher fuel costs. Inflation of purchase price may impact that going forward

Yep. Not only that, but diesel can also be more expensive than gasoline.
Regarding the maintenance aspect;- if you don’t use the diesel truck like a diesel truck, it’s going to clog shit and you’ll be out even more $$$

Tire size math question: I’m running 295-18’s (34”) which is 5% larger diameter per online tools. Just took a 220 mile drive (per Google maps) and my odometer read 206 miles. 14 less miles traveled because of larger tires. How does that calculate mpg conversion?

    220 mi. ÷ 206 mi. = 1.067

On your next trip/tank, multiply your odometer reading by 1.067, to correct it to the actual mileage traveled.

Then divide that new "actual" mileage by gallons burned for a fairly accurate mpg.

It was pushing 6 out there in September when we camped near Truckee. Luckily my 36 gallon gas tank allowed me to fill up in Reno, climb the hill with my trailer, drive around all week, then tow back down to Reno without filling up in CA :bananadance:

Not that Reno was cheap, I think it was still over $5. Anything in the west is relatively expensive, even in a red states like UT. We were up in the $4.40 range at that same time.

Complaining about gas mileage on a truck is like someone complaining about their Prius being unable to tow a large trailer, or a Vette not having enough room for a long trip.

To hell with that. My time is worth something, no way in hell am I going to drive 55-60 MPH on a highway in my AO. Two lane highways are 65 in SD, and 70 in WY interstates are both 80. Only inconsiderate turds do that kind of dumb shit out here unless weather dictates.

LOL, last time I was in Canada I was losing my mind at how slow you guys and gals all seem to drive. I’ve become very accustomed to cruising interstate highways at 85 MPH in the SS and covering ground on our glorious low traffic roads around here.

The point of driving is to catch up with the car in front of you :anonymous:

    No.

The point of driving is to pass the car in front of you. If you’re driving fast enough to catch up, don’t slow down and be co-dependent moron. Keep going fast and pass.

I see a lot of drivers from more populated places speed up to catch up with me or some other local, only to sit on our back bumper for reasons unknown even with perfectly clear roads. Does it freak them out to not have someone to tailgate or something? Afraid they’ll get lost, or worried they don’t have cell service?

Anyone from California or the east coast have an answer for me on this one? You guys will be crawling along on a two lane highway below the speed limit, I’ll pass you, and then within a few minutes you guys get lonely or something and will legit hit triple digit speeds to catch up and play follow the leader. What gives?

I don’t complain about my mileage if I set the cruise at 85 MPH to transit the state. Keep in mind the speed limit on I-90 is 80 MPH so 5 over is simply flow of traffic. Roads are wide open and you might be several miles from the next car or semi ahead of or behind you. Around Rapid City, or Sioux Falls there is more traffic and speed limits are lower accordingly and they are enforced.

Otherwise: put your favorite pair of driving glasses on, pick out a nice playlist of music/podcast/audio boook, set cruise control and try to be courteous to your fellow motorists. The left lane is for passing, turn signals are your friend, give semi’s plenty of room etc. Enjoy covering ground.

    Agreed.

I am not a proponent of road rage, I haven’t shot anyone since 2004 and that was in a foreign land fighting a rather pointless war. That said the people you describe exist, and at a minimum need to be beaten about the head and neck with alacrity.

I was like that, but one night I saw half of the bear on the highway and guts trail to the other half in the bushes. And in a couple of years I actually hit one. Good thing I wasn't going 85, so it only cost me a bumper, fog light and dirty pants. So I'm not in hurry anymore. It takes what it takes.

Around $3.10/gal in Boston burbs. My engines are all thirsty, but both drivers WFH for years, so who cares?

My nemesis on the road at night are elk. Never seen them on 4 lane divided highway, but the two lane I drive to and from work this time of year especially I see them frequently. Big herds standing around in the middle of the highway.

I know where and when to expect them after 17 years of driving this particular road. I still get worried when I see them because they’re unpredictable in behavior and harder to see than deer because their fur is darker.

I’m not rolling around at night on rural two lanes going 85, don’t be stupid. The speed limit works just fine.

    Conditions dictate.

Bizarre. I get a consistent 20+ MPG running in eco mode to and from town eight miles away. 35mph speed limit roads. Stop and go driving in town. What is the cost of diesel on the left coast? And the cost of diesel extortion fluid? You certainly won't recoup any money that way, or so it would seem to me. You own a (hopefully) reliable Toyota. Perhaps the best option is to put stock size tires on it, and drive conservatively. Then work on a plan to move to the United States.

    Just a couple of comments...

I own the same truck (2023 Limited TRD OR non-hybrid) and I'm getting 17.5-18.5mpg out of every tank on stock tires. Flat highway I'm getting 22-23mpg. I would strongly consider swapping back to OEM tires.

I also live in California. I just paid $3.59 in Morro Bay, CA. Looks like most of San Diego is in the low to mid $4s. Prices have been coming down lately.

I'm filling up every 10-12 days for around $100.

As someone above pointed out, you will lose the amount your truck has depreciated plus the taxes you paid on the truck. For my situation, that would be about $12,000. ($5k depreciation, $7k taxes.) $12k would buy you 83 full tanks of fuel at $4.50/gallon. That would pay for 3 years of fuel for me. Even if you fill up every 4 days, that's 11 months worth of fuel for you. Your break even point is 11 months.
