The injuries suck. But with that damage to the car that's a positive outcome. I had a displacement fracture like that in my wrist. Afrer getting it set right and about 6 months of PT it was good. The process was a bitch, but the end result was good.
    Best wishes.

    Yes
    For the most part
The longer her transfer (and subsequently her surgery) pushes out, the more agitated she’s getting. She’s been confined to a bed with excruciating low back/pelvis/tailbone pain now for more than 48 hours. No position is comfortable for more than 10-15 minutes and she can’t push with her feet or really roll over/around at all (and no weight bearing on her legs at all - full catheter for bladder draining).

he’s been able to come up and visit her once yesterday and once today. He’s in a little less pain and has a clear road to recovery already, while we don’t even know when her surgery will be much less what the recovery will look like afterward (how long in hospital, how long of non-weight bearing, how long of using a walker or crutches, etc)

Man, I can't imagine how hard that is for you. I understand her side of it, because I've had debilitating pain and not known how long it will last, but I can't begin to know how it feels to be a parent that just has to sit and wait while your kid goes through it. Keep your chin up and help her do the same. You'll all get through this.

All jokes aside, I’ve now been personal witness to more significant vehicle accidents involving loved ones than I really like to admit or want to remember. I’ve consistently been amazed at how the Subaru’s have faired regarding protecting the passenger “space.” I’d heard it talked about when we bought this car. The dealer pointed out many of the specific features and reinforcements (and I could actually see some of them exposed in the wreckage). Then we had a neighbor who was a firefighter, and he refused to put his family in anything else after how many accidents he had seen/rescued where the car saved the passengers.

Portland vegan lesbian stigma or not, I’m shopping for another one right now.

That was definitely a 'potentially fatal' impact. Taking the majority the force of the hit on the corner helped displace the energy. If that impact was deflected by the actions of your daughter's boyfriend, he may have saved her life.

So, the horizontally opposed engine that Subaru catches some grief over for not moving away from after so many years allows Subaru to engineer even more 'downward projection' of the engine compartment in the event of a head-on collision than most manufacturers; thus keeping the engine out of the passenger compartment...

Another more obvious point here is the way the passenger compartment maintained much of its structural integrity in spite of the amount of force and energy moving through that vehicle.

Your absolutely correct, the car did its job in a way not too many others would have been able to do in protecting the occupants as best as it could.

If you do end up at the crash scene at some point, you would be able to identify the precise point of impact by the damage to the road from debris being forced down. You would be able to see large gouges and chunks of asphalt removed from the roadway; essentially energy that could have transferred rearward being deflected downward by the design and engineering of the vehicle.

I hope that at this point in the evening she's been moved already and is on her way toward a surgery team coming up w/a solid plan to move her recovery forward. In the meantime :(

    Yes
He managed to brake and swerve some before the impact. And yes, part of the design on the Subaru places the engine lower in the engine bay and deflects it downward in a frontal collision. The amount of bracing through the core of the door structure was impressive too - positioned roughly in line with the drivers leg horizontally.

She made it into the new room at the other hospital about 8:40pm finally. I got home about 20 minutes ago to get some sleep. My wife is staying at the hospital tonight.

still not sure when surgery will be. waiting for Neuro and Ortho to consult and come up with a game plan. Still a small chance it might happen tomorrow.

she got a little care package today from some of the crew - the teddy bear was her companion in the ambulance transfer.

Whoa those pictures are scary! So glad she and her her BF are ok. I hope that she gets the transport that she needs very soon and gets the surgery asap. It is heartbreaking to hear about her pain. But the car did its job and now I am going to look for a Subaru for my daughters (19 and 16). That xray tells a story too - the amount of energy transfer that has to happen to break a humerus that cleanly is impressive to say the least. Thoughts and prayers with both of them

Definitely agree w/Gz in that if she's got the attitude of throwin' up a middle finger while she's got a smirk on her face, she's at least making the best of a really shitty situation and letting her personality fly a bit

Now onto adult feelings about this...

At this point, 'society' is telling us we should be thankful because it 'could've been worse'.... However, regardless of what led this fucktard to decide to pass in a no passing zone (on a blind stretch of roadway), he continued down a path of selfish choices and ultimately made a decision to allow impact to occur between his vehicle and casey's daughter's vehicle (regardless of the potential consequences to occupants of both vehicles.:mad::mad:

At some point, this dude had to realize he fck'd up and was now hung out to dry; and here's where the critical choice that I really have a problem with comes in...

Aside from obvious best choice during the initial stages of this incident, which was to be patient and wait until an opportunity to safely pass presents itself, he's now ass out and has to realize that a collision is imminent. Decision time jackass...

    A) he can hope that an opening magically becomes available and he'll be able to squeeze his vehicle into a place it doesn't belong just in time to avoid the impact while ignoring the potential consequences that a collision would have on occupants of both vehicles if that opening never presents itself... which is what he did :mad::mad: or...

    B) he can man up and own his catastrophic dumb ass decision and take an immediate and decisive evasive maneuver to avoid the head on collision. This probably would have resulted in him putting his own vehicle into a ditch or off a cliff or whatever... I don't care, but at least this way his initial poor ass decision would only affect him and endanger his own life; instead of hurting others :(

    Sorry, rant over...

Though I agree with the sentiment, my bet is that he was alongside another vehicle going the same direction, removing a swerve to the right as a viable option, and if he had swerved left (huge no no in any driving class where you are drilled to always veer to the right) he would have made a more complete head on impact. The best he could do and hope for would be to stand on the brakes and veer right. The trouble is that had that been the course of action he may have potentially pit maneuvered the other vehicle into the oncoming lane and caused a 3 vehicle accident. There is no excuse for him passing on the double. After that choice there was no way out and now good outcome available.

I hope one of two things happens; the court throws the book at him and he is on the hook for all the costs and loses his driving privileges (temporary or permanent) or, in the even that he skates, I hope he at least learned the lesson and never does something so foolish and selfish again. Given the sad state of "society" I would imagine that he's actively convincing himself of his own victimization and lack of guilt and will be seeking sympathy and leniency from any and all he comes across.

Don’t forget there’s the vehicle he was passing in the picture there as well. He did manage to turn to his right and helped in avoiding full head-on. No idea the positioning of his vehicle relative to who he was passing but there’s also the possibility of him sending that car off the road as well.

I know the road where it happened, and have a pretty good idea what went down. Twisty country backroad that makes a final turn into a downhill straightaway. A person being a little “extra” cautious in the dark and the rain on the twisty part (I know - I get stuck behind someone like that every few days on my roads home). He (impatient driver) knows the road straightens, so as soon as he’s clear of the corner he’s over the center line to punch past the slow guy…only suddenly there’s headlights in that other lane because the topography has some dips and a hill and he was too focused on passing the “dumbass” and wasn’t actually looking that the area is no passing for another 1/4 mile.

I wasn’t there. Don’t know all the details. Don’t need to. We will move forward - get the kids healed, get the car replaced, have our family Christmas, look forward to 2024 being better.

We’ll get the police report when it’s available. Insurance companies are already taking. Police officer that gave my wife the info exchange and tow slip said the driver admitted fault and there were plenty of witnesses that corroborated - there were cars behind my daughter and anyone in the vehicle that was being passed as well.
