Due to the $ and lead time of a new one I am thinking about tracking down a used topper for a trip I have coming up. Thought it might be helpful if any others are in a similar situation to get a list going of what other models might fit the 22. Looks like there have been some successful installs off 2013 F150, and 2011 Silverado. Anyone else know of any that might be a good fit/look decent?

I saw someone put a topper from a Silverado on 6.5 bed Tundra and it looked like it fit well. The guy said he got all the measurements from the previous owner before going further. Do you have a 5.5 bed or 6.5? I"m looking for a contractors shell for mine that I would take on and off as needed for trips which is why I don't want to spend much on it, I need the utility of a contractor cap but only part time and I"m not entering it in a car show anytime soon so I'll take functionality over looks.

Mine's a 5.5' bed. I'm in a similar boat, really just need mine for trips a few times a year but otherwise don't really want or need one on there. Also mostly looking for functionality, especially since it's not going to be on the truck all the time.

Thanks, had seen that one. I am looking more at fitting older models, both from prior gen Tundras or other truck models. Felt like that thread was trending more towards what companies are currently making toppers for the 3rd gen, availability, etc. Thought it might be helpful if anyone else is in the same boat if we could compile a list of what works/doesn't work. :notsure:

I'm the same way but there were a few pics of trucks with canopies from Silverado's and F150's in there which I found helpful as far as compiling a list of trucks that would work.

Since you only need it a couple of times per year, have you looked into a soft topper? I have a LEER and wish I had thought of a soft topper before I bought it.

My fear is the security of what's inside the canopy getting stolen, how secure are they? I guess if someone wants something bad enough they'll figure out a way to get it.

I've thought about soft topper and had the same worry with security. A shell probably isn't that much better in reality but seems less likely someone would go to the trouble to get in vs soft top.

With a hard topper they just break the windows, is easily done. If someone wants something bad enough, they will find a way. In Grand Junction I have seen enclosed trailer with their metal side peeled open because the thieves couldn't get the rear door(s) open.

I make sure everything is secured and locked up, and most importantly insured.

Hey TN, I would like to be part of that shell compatibility compilation. I’m searching for a used shell for my ‘22 Tundra 6.5 bed. I’m wondering what you and others have found out since this original posting. I think you have a 5.5 bed but somebody’s gotta know what makes a good fit. I’m looking for used since it’s just a stretch to justify paying $3500 and up for a new one. I use my truck for work, doing construction. I currently have a cross truck tool box but would take it out to put in a shell, which I could also use for occasional camping, etc. So, I’ve heard about some years Silverado compatibility and you mentioned 2011, plus 2013 F-150, but I’m trying to fit to my 6.5’ bed. Thanks to anyone who has more info.

Thats why you don't buy a camper shell with windows - so the bad guys can't see what's inside, which helps to deter them.

Insurance is useless when dealing with theft, especially tools. They will require you to submit all of the receipts for all of your tools or whatever was stolen, and then pay you only a portion of everything that was stolen as they deduct depreciation.

Oh, and you still need to pay your deductible, which could be as high as $500-1k, and your insurance will likely go up due to a claim.

So no... Don't waste your time and money on insurance thinking that it'll help you cover stolen goods.

Don't be so hasty to paint such a broad brush with a statement like that. Not recently, but in the past I have had the opposite experience, but then again, am not in CA.

Had a vehicle broken into overnight and had some tools, expensive sports equipment, CDs, clothes stolen. Because it wasn't in my driveway, the claim was sent into homeowners insurance. Yes, deductible had to be met ($500), but I received a check and it was for around 90% (after deductible) of what I lost. I did have pictures of most everything that was in the vehicle (the pics were not from this trip). I did include a complete list of what was stolen to the police, in a spreadsheet and this was included in the police report.
