I've been reading about problems with the 5.7 V8 breaking valve springs and consequently dropping a valve causing complete engine failure. My question is, can all of the springs be replaced without removing the engine from the truck? I am considering a 2020 Tundra without any problems (so Far) and would want to replace all valve springs with aftermarket springs. I've read having the cylinder at TDC and filling the cylinder with compressed air, this can be accomplished. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Seems to be a pretty isolated occurrence. Are you wanting to proactively replace your valve springs? Not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

Not an isolated occurrence according to the youtube car care nut. Yes, considering all new aftermarket springs

Pretty sure that was only an occurrence on the 2007 model year.

All hail car care nut! I wouldn't let a single source that posts content for money to get me tearing into my engine to replace something that is highly unlikely to fail.

That was broken camshafts. Had a bad batch that affected several thousand VINs with quite a few actual failures reported. Identified and remedied pretty early on.

I wouldn’t worry about doing anything preemptively for such a failure. It’s still rather uncommon and was more of an issue on 07-13s IIRC. Letting the engine warm up to operating temp before running it at higher RPMs is also important to preventing valve springs breaking.

Ah, I thought that it was valve springs, thanks.

I have an 07 5.7, haven't had major engine issues since I bought it in 07. Did hear about the dropped valves waaay back in the day, but in 287k+ miles I've only had basic maintenance issues with bits like: sparks, starter, water pump, radiator (collateral damage), brake pads and rotors. You can always go aftermarket springs, but in reality you'll just increase your chances of dropping a valve. Depending on mileage of the engine and whoever does the install. Quality of the springs would also come into question, OEM valves with a history of dropping you may have some recourse with Toyota Corporate, but an aftermarket option you'd be SOL on that front. I'm not here to convince you of anything, just bringing my .02.

If you can find 5 examples of a 2020 3UR motor valve spring failing, then maybe go for it.

That’s statistical noise for as many of these engines are on the road. I definitely wouldn’t bother replacing springs for all the aforementioned reason you listed earlier.

I wouldn't do it for a hundred examples and I doubt there are 5 examples of a 2020 motor failing for this. The whole thing is ridiculous to me. But OP seems concerned, I figure the only way to quell that is with new valve springs or proof his are fine.
