I've got a 2008 Tundra 5.7L with 64,000 miles on it. Was driving home 2 days ago running about 55 when I felt a loss of power. The check engine light came on with a couple others. Stopped by a local shop and had code read. They said cylinder 1 and 2 were miss firing probably needs a set of plugs. I get the truck home use another vehicle to get plugs, install them, no change. Make an appointment with Butler Toyota and while driving the truck in, the motor locks up. Butler calls me the next day and says the truck needs a new motor , going to cost $10,000. Anyone have any dealings like this or any advice?

Butler has not disassembled it yet. I had to agree to pay for tear down to find out what the problem is. Once they figure it out a representative from Toyota will be notified and investigate issue. I'm a huge Toyota fan. This is the 3rd new Toyota for me since 2003. I hope they don't let me down on this one!

yep bank account is running low from it..
If the truck only has 64,000 on the clock it should be under the power-train warranty?

Ouch. That is no Bueno. Would be good to know what the problem was. Heat is the typical reason it locked up but the cause could be multiple things. No oil? Oil leak? No coolant? Coolant leak? Coolant blockage?

What is the truck worth with a locked up engine? Not sure if $10k is worth it for a new engine in an 08 or if you take the hit on selling it to get another.

Some of the emissions components might be warrantied closer to that mileage. I'd actually have to look it up.

Just found out today from butler Toyota that a valve spring failed and dropped a valve down into the cylinder. Time to get Toyota rep involved and see what they think.

Fluids is definitely not the issue. I changed the oil every 5000. I bought the truck new and am meticulous about checking fluids, lubricants

That would tear up a engine fast. Sounds like the engine had a bad part to start from the factory. Just now showed up. Never heard of one dropping the valve out like that. I have seen burned valves but but dropped ones. Yikes

WOW. Awesome dealer! For those that were wondering. The 2008 came with a 60k/60 month power train warranty.

Congrats. With this situation, I believe we should all be happy about being Toyota owners. I know I am.
