I also ended up skipping the Tundra this time around - I bought a new F-150 last week. It's a PowerBoost Lariat.

    Biggest reasons why:
    • 4 Auto - This has been beat to death over the past few pages, but Toyota said they didn't think the lack of this feature would cost them sales. Well, it was the number one issue for me and the single one that I couldn't look past so they're wrong for at least one person. I've had two trucks without and two trucks with it and I don't want to go back. It's so nice when side roads are snowy/icy and the main road is clear. You can take off without worrying about quickly flipping back to 2WD to avoid binding on dry pavement. It's also helpful in situations like moving a trailer on a wet lawn - no binding to tear up the grass, but the extra traction if you need it. I don't buy that they couldn't have done it in a way to make it durable without breaking the bank. Ford doesn't tend to have issues with their system, and GM has been doing this on many of their trucks even longer than that without widespread problems.
    • Visibility - I could have looked past this because other competitors also aren't great in this area, but the Ford is noticeably better. The window dip that some criticized here serves a purpose and I don't think you'll hear any F-series driver say they want it gone. I will say the Tundra cameras are a little nicer - mostly in variety of views versus even the new Fords - and the rear view mirror camera is nice.
    • Rear Seat Area - The drivetrain hump and unnecessarily massive under seat bins frustrated me here because it leaves very little usable floor space. This is another one I could have looked past in order to get a 6-1/2 ft bed in a <20 ft config, but it's definitely not ideal.
    • Remote Start/Pay-to-Play - I really don't like how they locked remote start behind a subscription after a few years. Ford does have some subscription stuff (connected Nav reverts back to offline stored maps after a few years, for example), but the basic remote start/app location functions are free - as it should be.
    • Seat Comfort - At a minimum, I was going to need to drive a Tundra again because I had concerns about this from my first test drive. We do long trips and I don't want to be squirming in my seat after an hour of driving. The new Ford seats are outstanding - pretty close to Volvo-level.
    • Cost - I got a dealer to play ball on this F-150 and with invoice pricing plus a $2000 cash offer Ford sent me, the Tundra was no longer any cheaper - losing one of its key advantages.

Anyway, here it is with its winter set of wheels/tires on it. That was another plus to staying with Ford - they bolt right on and it picked up the TPMS sensors without any issues. I did go "dad-mobile" (crew cab 5.5 ft bed), but I felt I was getting a little too hung up on that when I own a 16 ft trailer. The color is "avalanche gray" - almost white, but with a slight gray hue in certain light.

That 3.0L Duramax is awesome. I towed with VW Touareg TDI for 6 years... 28-20 mpg highway, 15 mpg towing with kayaks on top!

Food for thought for everyone Payload shopping. GM can claim higher payload because they have smaller gas tanks than most Tundras. Gas and tank mass can be close to 50 lbs. Not a big deal, 50 lbs is 50 lbs.

Back to the initial poster's question regarding Ford and Tundra.
In the video regarding the 1,000,000 Tundra and the driveline component comparisons. The Tundra has many components that are bigger (rear diff), thicker (transfer case chain, sprockets), more robust (driveshaft) than the F150... plus Tundra has opposing dual piston caliper brakes, and the F150 has just single sided dual piston calipers. The list goes on.

Surely this is some of the reason Tundras have different/lower payload than Ford.
Again, I own a Ford. It's been a good truck when it's not in the shop... but there is a reason it's in the shop.

On another note, I wish the Tundra's had real bumpers... not plastic bits that are molded-in-color or chrome plated to look like steel, but alas... gotta save mass somewhere. At least the Tundra bumper won't rust like my neighbors F150 painted bumper.

Nice truck, congrats. My list for getting the Ford looks like yours, with a few additions (on-board power, bigger cab, tow hooks, 3.73 gears) but 4A was the dealbreaker.

I have the 2.4kw on-board power on this truck. The 7.2 would have been cool, but I doubt I'd have a need for more than 20 amps of 120v anyway. I could use this to run my refrigerator, pellet stove, and a few lights in a pinch. The PowerBoosts do have 3.73 gears which is nice. Tow hooks and rear bumper design were also plusses. This truck doesn't have the tailgate step like my old one, but I only used that a few times so I wasn't worried about it.

The lack of tailgate step, panoramic moon roof, and FX4 are actually good things because it helps keep the payload reasonable - the PowerBoosts are usually low in that area. It's 1537 lbs on this truck.

The bigger cab is kind of silly for me, but the market has left me behind there so it is what it is.

I have the 2kw on my Tremor, I've used it more than I'd have thought, everything from running a heat gun to peel old decals off the boat to heating up baby bottles when traveling. I have a whole house generator so 2kw when traveling is all I ever need. I see the benefit of the tailgate step but I skipped that in my special order too, I'm a spry 38 year old after all. :muscleflexing:. Payload is 1580 on my truck, and what will eventually drive me to get a 1 ton.

I can confirm Florida Toyota dealers are in lock step with each other over the added "fees/clubs/dealer addons" and will not budge off them.

I have great respect for your friend going for something useful and not a lifestyle vehicle to compare tires and lift with the other soccer dads in the starbucks parking lot.

When I was living in NYS, it was amazing how man 4x4s you would see in the ditch after a storm. Even though I had that option in my 2017 Expedition, I didn't like to use 4wd until necessary because I wanted to know how slippery the road conditions were for stopping and taking corners. So many clueless 4wd truck owners forget the 4a doesn't help you stop.

I'm mostly doing homeowner stuff - no camper or boat, so the ~1500 payload works for me. As much as I love Super Duties, there's nothing I do that an F-150 can't - even a midsize would be enough, just pushing its limits sometimes. I'm 32 so jumping up into the bed isn't presently an issue.

I'm interested in getting some tongue weight on it - I had SumoSprings on my last truck and I loved them, so I expect I'll do the same for this one. I did notice they improved the chain hookups on the hitch on this truck. On my last one they were awkwardly far back and the chain hooks barely fit through them. They're angled on this one and might be a little larger.

Look into the Roadmaster Active Suspension. I don't have them but I've been considering ordering.

Oh on a safety note with the F150 roughly 5 years ago I was involved in a rear end collision, a Dodge Ram decided to total itself while I was stopped at a red light. The truck held up fine but the seats did not, the seats in an F150 with the exclusion of the Raptor are very cheaply made. They will break under force and this could lead to permanent injuries. I am not sure if any manufacturer these days provide excellent safety seats for collisions. They look at it as a risk vs reward and if they have to pay out certain amounts of money for damages while keeping production costs low then they will do that. It is one reason I went with Toyota but there is no guarantee there, you will find most makers these days put seats in modern vehicles that have less structural integrity than your normal lawn chair.

Nice truck I strongly considered one. Do get an extended FORD factory warranty though. That is an advantage for Ford, there a couple of Ford dealers that sell them online. Here is one: https://www.floodfordesp.com/

In my research, the Powerboost Ford was one that had many issues.
    ----------------

Unfortunately, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid didn't fare quite as well. Rather, the Ford F-150 PowerBoost ranked as the least reliable vehicle in Consumer Reports' most recent rankings with a reliability score of just 4 out of 100, placing it dead last among all vehicles tested.Dec 13, 2022

https://fordauthority.com/2022/12/ford-f-150-powerboost-hybrid-is-crs-least-reliable-vehicle/#:~:text=Unfortunately, the Ford F-150,last among all vehicles tested.

    ---------------
Ford's factory extended warranty does work very well. I have used it. Good luck.

this turned out to be the truth for me as well. I really wanted the powerboost for a while but it crapped out on the test drive with malfunctions all over the place and the other one I tested was clunky in the driveline.

I was also waiting for Toyota to clean up the builds from the first year BS, decided to go with this, so well see how that turns out

should I post the vid again @Bannerman ? its been a few months, HAHHA

    Congratulations. I am in a 2021 302a 2 tone longbed CC Powerboost 4x4.

Most amazing vehicle I have ever owned. I have had some electronic glitches and recalls but it has never left me stranded. The tech should be a bit more mature a couple model years in. I have the 7.2 kw system only because it's what was on the truck I spotted on a lot but in all honesty I have only used it for a little tailgating and to run some lawn stuff. We are a block from a school so our outages are never long. House power always pops back on before I can move the truck and grab my cords.

My F series is the first vehicle I ever owned that I could drive for 6- 8 hours without a break and still feel fresh and it's just an XLT with driver and passenger 10 way power.

If 10 year vehicle turnover is your routine I recommend the extended warranty. It is the first one I ever bought in my adult vehicle buying lifetime. For me what was supposed to be A 1 day recall turned onto a 15 day sidelining due to software glitches and this was the tipping point for me to go to Grainger Ford and whip my card out. I was puttering around in the dealer's 4 year old Escape while they conference called with Dearborn and tested one computer
Module at a time. I have a great dealer but it is a complicated vehicle and full mastery of all its systems will still be spotty dealer by dealer. Things could happen that might be a head scratcher even for the master tech.

No regrets here tho. Been a great and very versatile feature rich road tripper. Aside from that 15 days it's been there for us and enjoyable since March 2022. And it did not actually break down on me. What should have been a minor visit turned into a 2 week stay due to electronics not responding well to dealer reprogramming. It's complicated but cliff notes are if I had a manual tailgate latch like I've always been fine with none of this would have ever happened.

1000x this. I've never had a vehicle go sideways like the F150. To me, it was a major annoyance and let down but not a killer as I have other vehicles. I kept thinking about the people that actually use and rely on them for work or don't have a situation where they can just grab something else.
I think ALL of the 1/2 tons are a grab bag of good and bad right now. Overall, I really like the Tundra but don't think it's a favorite vehicle or anything. I do trust the Toyota and their dealers more than any of the others.

I'll probably buy a 5y/125k or 6y/125k once Christmas is over - the 6 year would effectively get me 5.5 years if my mileage stays consistent with what I've been doing but I might be able to stretch it to the full 6 if we take my fiancee's CX-5 on trips more often. It's just like you said, though, the F-series is such a fantastic road trip vehicle. Awesome seats, great visibility, loads of power, good tech.

I usually don't hold onto a vehicle for more than 4 years, but I'm going to try for 5-6 on this one. This one was the first time I was second guessing my normal trade cycle due to cost - vehicle prices have just ballooned so much. Buying a new vehicle so often is definitely not a good financial move, but it's really the only truly questionable money decision I make.

Yeah been lazy about changing the profile. That Tundra and my '16 challenger RT went bye bye in early 2022 so I could rebuild our deck buy a brand new truck and be positioned for my wife's upcoming 50th and retirement all at the same time before pivoting to another muscle car in about 5 years.
