People just looking for confirmation if they made a good decision. I feel it comes down to the 5th wheel, equipment, set up and experience. Personally I don't believe that someone running 200-300lbs over payload is signing their own death certificate.

Most people advocating against overloading aren't super concerned with a little overload. Most 5th wheel pin weights crush the payload of a tundra straight off the line, then they add all the mods to the truck, a full family and pets, and a bed full of gear too. That's more than just a little overloading.

I also think it's more useful to view it from a proportional stance than from the weight itself. If you overload an HD truck with a payload of 3000 lbs by another 300 lbs it's not the same as overloading a 1/2 ton with a 1200 lb payload by the same 300 lbs. One is a 10% overload the other is 25%. Then look at the above scenario of a 5th wheel pin plus gear, mods, and passengers and it's probably closer to a 50% overload. A 50% overload is significant.

I'll stick to the 80% rule on towing and buy the appropriate truck for the job. YMMV.

That's the issue. Going to a higher payload truck means moving away from Toyota. Most of us drive Tundras because we have had bad experiences with domestic trucks and don't feel like doing that again.

Pulled the trigger. Brought the Basecamp home today. Now the modding begins.

Dedicated my truck after my first dog, Cali, but will have to change it when I'm towing because I think naming her Vader and the Basecamp Phasma is all too perfect with this combo.

After stopping by a dealership to look over a NOBO and then a competitor to look at the IBEX (rebranded NOBO) I know why. The build quality on them was garbage...

Currently shopping a few Lance models: 1685/1875/1985.

This is solid advice having owned 2 Forest river products. First was so cheap, I expected the poor materials and build quality. Paid $12,800 for a 28' bunkhouse model brand new. My current is an Outback 292RL that has some better design and materials, but still poor assembly and durability. Lots of loose trim, lots of poor craftsmanship. Also got it new super cheap, so I'll deal. Those Lances and Bigfoots seem nice.

All RVs are built like crap.

Until you get north of $100k, don't expect any quality.

Not a problem. We can only get what is offered for the Midwest. I would like to see some quality rigs, but there just isn't any available around here.

I actually own 2, 5th wheel RVs. Our 1994 is miles better quality than our 2018. We just needed more space so had to upgrade.

What model did you get? I'm looking at the 20x. Finally moving up from the Kodiak tent, sleeping on the ground isn't as easy as it used to be.

Sounds like I got the model you want and it sounds like you are in the same predicament I'm going through. It's the 2023 20X. I'm hoping to get my feet wet soon, so to speak. Been buying accessories for this thing like crazy. I will admit, there are a lot of things I'm having to buy coming from someone who's a complete trailer novice such as WDH, black tank tubing, RV specific toilet paper, etc.

If you have any questions regarding the Basecamp, let me know and I'll be sure to see what I can get answered for you since most of it is fresh in my head.

Just you talking about getting the accessories gets me excited for mine. Did you get a good deal being a 2023 model? Seen dealers having some sales on the 23s. Thought about buying slightly used, where a lot of those accessories are thrown in, particularly solar panels. Funny how I always poked fun at glampers in the past, now looking forward to having my own. Too bad the Airstream forum isn't as good as this one. Pop up adds?...come on, really

Yeah, it is a trade off. I wanted to go used but with the availability and the fact that financing doesn't care new or used, that made our decision. We compared the difference between the '24 and '23 and we determined it wasn't worth the extra cost. We did get the $1,500 off for last year's model and they were wanting $60k without batteries. We ended up $58k OTD with 2 100Ah heated Battle Born batteries and Blue Ox WDH. Before negotiations, they wanted to charge an extra $3,750 for both batteries and WDH on top of the $60k and TT&L. All in all, here in Texas I felt it was hard to beat that price for a new 20X. Ours did have the solar panels and microwave (I think all the ones we saw had the microwave). We're thinking of removing it since we don't expect to use it. I've been buying more battery stations and portable solar panels since we can't use the Coleman without shore power. Been researching adding an MPPT controller to the external solar hookup. Also bought the snap pads to extend the stabilizing jacks and looking into the fitted sheets since the bed is a wonky shape.

Its been a progression from tent camping in snow to the bed of the old original 4x4 pick ups.

We have a 2020 Outdoors RV 21DBS that we bought last year to replace our previous camper. We love it but I wasn’t able to make towing it with our Sequoia+air bags work. We love the RV though, it’s perfect for us — wife and our sweet little special needs daughter who actually is an adult now but will always be young at heart, and LOVES camping. If we didn’t need the slide out, Bigfoot would have been our first choice.

I tow with a 2012 regular cab short box with 22" Black Rhino wheels and low profile streets, and pull a 29' RV (34'9" overall) dry weight 7400 lbs. (always travel with 1/2 tank of fresh water because I often boondock). I use a load-levelling anti-sway device with two 1,500 lbs. torsion bars. In addition, I have a Subaru 3200 watt inverter in the box, firewood, equipment, etc. I've towed a lot of RVs over the years, including a 30' RV that I pulled for 7 years in Canada and the US with a 2003 4x4 Durango with the 4.7 L (lovely engine). With the Tundra in this configuration I've never felt that I was overloaded, whether on divided highways or county roads. Great truck.
