    Usually it’s purely decorative but in this case, I wanted to isolate the super steel from the other steels. The carbon migrates when forging so that after several heats the carbon content is fairly uniform throughout the billet.
    For example, 15n20 with .75% carbon layered with 1095 with .95% carbon, would yield a piece with about .85% carbon.
    The white #1 has 1.35% carbon and I didn’t want it being diluted. The layer of nickel prevents that from happening.
    Does that make sense?

    Actually what happened is I have bought 2 pieces of steel; Super Blue #1 and the Super White #1. They were $135 ea, for 18” of steel. So I built the one billet and then decided what knife to make. The edges were too deformed to be sure of the layers showing up in the right way so I reduced the size of the knife to this little Bowie. I might try to get a chefs knife out of the next one.

    It’s spalted walnut. I had a difficult time picking out the material for this one. Started with 5 to choose from and narrowed it down to 3. The spalting really is amazing.here’s a couple other ones with similar wood
