My F150 has hooks and an air dam. It's doable but one of these things Toyota left off the Tundra to pinch pennies that could be tossed into development of the far more competitive Tacoma. Not saying that makes it a bad truck, I don't think it is. But we had this conversation before. The Tacoma sells and it got a couple of popular things the Tundra didn't get because Toyota feels it has more to lose on the compact segment.

"Focus groups said they didn't want it" is just better to say than "we thought we could save a few dollars there and
    still hit our targets."

I priced out a 2024 Tacoma yesterday, just out of curiosity, it’s not enough truck for me these days. But anyway it was almost $55k. Tough sell for a truck that size.

Edit: obviously they can be had much cheaper, it was loaded.

Raise your hand if you used tow hooks in the last 5 years.

I think it is funny that the image folks that never off road that put on lifts, giant tires to take their kid to school in the morning on the way to the office are offended by a lifted Ford/Chevy/Ram truck owner making fun of the lack of them in the starbucks parking lot.

I have never used the front tow hooks in any of my vehicles, ever. That includes 2 Wranglers.

Toyota is the only truck manufacturer that actually looked at how the trucks are really used. If I off roaded so much that I would require them, I wouldn't be doing it with a Tundra. The few that actually do, can add aftermarket for their needs.

I've used mine three times in the year since I got my truck. I'm also not making fun of any one brand specifically, the heaviest load carried by VAST majority of 1/2 ton owners is groceries.

I'll do you one better. I needed to take this tree down right next to the driveway, but my wife was having a fit about it because there was a "squirrel family" living in it about 8' up. So to appease her I broke rule #1 and got on a ladder with a saw. I present to you my security camera footage of how this unfolded......

Ok FINE. Our wastegates don't fail.

In all seriousness, the three times I used my front tow hooks were doing something like above or pulling out a stuck Econoline on a jobsite, could have spun around and pulled from the back (like it's supposed to be done) if I had needed to. I've never actually needed them for recovery of my truck.

If the front tow hooks aren’t there, you can’t paint them red for that +15 grip bonus

Yeah I just watched that picktruck and SUV talk guy always talked about on this thread price one out in a youtube video at over 50K. For as long as I've been buying trucks a well equipped compact truck did not provide huge savings over a middle trim half ton. In 2004 I was shopping leftover 03 F150 XLTs and gave up, moving to a Dakota Crew Cab because the Ford dealers thought the fact that I was 24 meant I was stupid and they were going to sell me a leftover old body style after the redesign at a "first year of the redesigned body style" price. But the spread between the trucks OTD was about 5K between a Crew cab Dakota and Supercab F150XLT. Years later I looked back and figured I should have looked harder for a better 2003 deal.

In 2009 I paid 32K for an 09 Tundra SR5 which was again about 5K more than a well equipped Tacoma. Crew Cab to Crew Cab. This time I ate the 5K figuring the comfort would be worth it in the long run. But There was a spread between the two. You might not save a huge amount in the long run but you saved something going with a more heavily equipped Compact over a half ton. Now the best equipped Tacoma is actually a bit more than the base Tundra Crewmax or other basic half ton Crew Cabs. All the little ones have gotten bigger inside and out.

Almost like with inflation levels being what they are Comapacts are deliberately being moved into a price point where people who can't choke down higher trim half ton prices anymore and don't really need the capacity anyway can still be sold a loaded pickup.

Had a 2023 Suburban as a rental car. Seats were not that bad. Seats in my 2019 are also not that bad, although many complain about them too. They’re are definitely better seats out there though. Navigator seats were nice.

On this forum we have 3rd gen Tundra owners who are mad they don't have tow hooks and owners who could care less and see no use for them. They are all 3rd Gen Tundra owners. They bought the truck. That's what Toyota cares about. A small number of Gen 2 owners like me who moved on because they perceived less than acceptable value in the redesign make no difference. They're hitting their targets and gaining share with a truck that's slightly smaller on the inside, and which offers no flat rear load floor, no inverter option or tow hooks. Their calculations were correct. They were able to hit targets and gain ground leaving out certain things for cost savings.

The most interesting part of that article is that every truck (titan doesn't count as they are done for) except Ram sold more year over year, just crazy the number of people buying these trucks. And yes, most of them do not need front tow hooks.

Good data. The Tundra sales had been stagnant for years and now they're not. I'm not going to look it up but I think they were in 85K/yr or so range. Now selling up 50% YoY and a run rate of aprox 120K.

You don't need them until you need them.
I have pulled two trucks out of a sandy shallow boat launch area, owners trying to pull their boat out.
They backed in their exhaust bubbling. Could not get traction to get out.
    They just kept digging in.

We'll see what the next couple years brings. Each new economic report zooms past the big picture and in on a tiny little blip on the graph that looks good and this floats the stock market and keeps consumer consumer confidence elevated. Enough people still feel like they're doing well enough to move these trucks. Maybe that will last forever but I doubt it.

We have had 2-3 years of strikes across the economy that have resulted in huge pay increases throughout the service and manufacturing and other sectors. These keep coming one after another and I don't even think they've really figured into prices yet. It will all create more inflationary pressure.

But whatever, we had a good month so that must mean we're set for another golden 10 years.

That’s about how many were sold every year from 2013-2020 before Covid.

they didnt have enough production for a long time, it wasnt really a function of the truck selling or not selling, since launch you couldn't even find one on the lot in most cases, look at that thread with the prices, trying to find one etc on this site. I think now, production is ramping up a bit more. I don't know however if they are running at full capacity yet or not. when they are at full capacity and there are tundras actually around, then we will see how much of a sales success or failure it is.

most numbers are not just 1/2 tons, so comparing market share isnt really all that easy as looking at that link above type deal, they only make 1 truck and a 1/2 ton truck. if you put in the TACO like the others have 2500s in their sales, its a little different story, jsut an illustration , not saying that makes sense.

keep in mind they have always been production limited, this is why they finally moved the taco out of the factory, but then covid hit and they are still production limited.

I think now if they can get to full capacity , they can crank out like 200-300 a year, but Im not sure they are at full capacity as I still reading about parts shortages that are intermittent .

its always that way though, the economic cycle will always turn at some point. I somewhat get a kick out of these people who are always calling for a recession, it coming, it coming, ya no shit, if you say it long enough you'll be right at some point.

Fed is already talking about holding and then 3 rate cuts next year, so money will also get cheaper. we'll see what happens

a recession is coming, LOL, someday yes

Truth. Chrome is not appealing. Does anyone look at a truck and think, sweet, lots of chrome trim. Maybe there are a few but IMO the minority. Tow hooks, prefer to have then vs. not have them. Fairly easy add if you really want them.

I looked at the Tremor. I really like the truck but have never owned a Ford. I was very close to pulling the trigger but my intuition said NO. My realtor picked up a 2023 Tremor 150, 4" lift, method 305s, SWEET looking truck IMO.
