WIND NOISE

I drove 3 hours in 30 mph gusts of wind (the first experience of this kind in the new truck- 18 wheelers struggling to stay on the road/ debris everywhere, road signs displaced, etc)- the truck handled well but the wind noise in the cab was quite severe- to the point where I checked the windows and sunroof making certain the windows were not ajar

With 30 mph gusts and the speed at 80 mph, I expected wind noise but not to this extent. Since I purchased the truck (2022 LIMITED TRD OR-NH) November 11th, at these same speeds -I have not noticed crazy wind noise- (as some 2022 owners have complained).

Is this to be expected in these conditions or is this a flaw in this gen. Tundra?

 

You hear lots of complaints about wind noise, but my '23 1794 is the most quiet ride I've owned. Yesterday, I was on I-70 in the eastern plains of Colorado with a steady 30-40 mph crosswind running at 80 mph. There was a little wind noise as expected, but nothing excessive. Some guys claim they can't even hear their radios due to wind noise. it makes me wonder if they even test drove their trucks before buying them.

Well, reality is that if you take it in for service, the dealership will only drive it at the posted hwy speeds and you will only be limited to whatever winds are present at the time of diagnosis. if you can’t reproduce it during those conditions, warranty is not going to help you. Dealerships are not going to throw parts at something they cannot reproduce.

 

I just bought 2024 Tundra limited 2 months ago ,it has wind noise sound like heavy wind blowing on windows at about 30 mph and up,I down loaded db meter for phone and I am getting about 66 db with it laying on arm rest and 60 on console as anyone else checked with a meter

 

I had really bad wind noise on my 2023 Tundra TRD Pro. I finally figured out where the majority of it is coming from. It’s from the window gasket. I added 3M double sided tape on the inside where you see the highlights. It was mostly coming from the upper corner and towards the front. This reduced the noise signifianctly. It would start at about 40 MPH. But, now I don’t hear it and it’s fairly quite all around until I get to about 60-70 MPH.

 

Painful huh

 

I have two dB meter apps that can show as much as a 7dB difference for the same environment. The only way to actually know is to have a calibrated dB meter, not one of those things you get on Amazon for $25-50. You're looking at hundreds of dollars for an actual meter.

If you compress that plastic gasket it creaks if you manage to stabilize that gasket a lot of the plastic noise is gone while going over rough terrain. So now you can successfully chase down any other NVH issues Toyota blessed us with lol.

 

Yeah, it’s under the gasket so it attaches to the door.

 

Pics of your door trim? Maybe something is different?

 

How does it look with the 3M tape? Quiet trumps looks but just wondering. Pondering if stripping the entire length would provide more benefit at higher speeds. 3M tape easy to remove w/o leaving adhesive?

 

Can you post a picture of behind the gasket where the tape is? I would like to see how it looks.

 

It looks stock. The photo I shared is after I taped it. I used a heat gun on the tape and rubber so it would stick, it took a few tries to get it to hold. When I pealed off the tape after my failed attempts, it didn’t leave any residue. But, it might after staying on for a longer time.

 

I can’t without having to re-tape it. The key is to push the bottom fold of the gasket to the edge of the door, so that it blocks the airflow coming in from the outside. See attached photo of where to apply pressure. It also shows that it looks stock.

My 23 limited is currently at the dealership getting my mirrors replaced. I thought I had the same issues, but when I clasped the mirrors the noise stopped. The dealership said I could fix it with tape, but I opted for new mirrors.

 

I tried clasping mirror it just move noises to different area

I use the dB meter in my Apple Watch Ultra 2, its surprisingly accurate

 

I used .25” wide tape and 1.5mm thick. I had to use one full width strip and one cut in half to get enough coverage. It might be better to go with .5” wide and cut it down.

Just to clarify, you lift up the rubber strip and put the 3m tape between the door surface and the rubber strip?

I am thinking road bike handlebar tape could work great. Cork style, spongy, can compress when door closes. Probably not too thick but it is uniform.

If I can figure out my wind issue I would really love this truck. When I'm running the air and music is on, which is mostly the case, I don't notice it.

 

Dang thanks a lot! I have a whistling above 60mph I thought was coming from the drivers left a/c vent but it could very well be that window gasket.

 

The tape goes between the door on the metal and the rubber gasket. I just pulled back the gasket away from the door slightly so that I could place the tape. I used a heat gun on the gasket to get it to stick better to the tape.

 

I added 3m tape this morning couldn’t tell any difference, tried duct tape in different places still didn’t help I give up just turn radio on lol

Brothers from another mother. I took the post from MJE505 and tried something from my lens. I'm a road biker and had some tubes sitting around. 700x21-23c. For those of you that don't know road bike tubes out of the box: thin, flat, not too wide. 0.7" wide and 0.125" thick. Not to mention rubber which is great for vibration dampening. I cut strips to cover the sides and the top of each window except the back slider. Not small strips basically as long as possible avoiding the 90 degree angles. I put the tubing inside the rubber seal by pulling down the seal from the inside with windows down, and put the bike tubing on the outside portion of the door frame. Sits between the rubber seal and the metal door frame nicely. When putting the rubber seal back in place it sits slightly further out but unless you are looking for discrepancies it's not noticeable. Window still goes up/down NO issues. But I can tell there is slight increase in resistance but seems to be just the right amount.

Massive decrease in wind noise. Usually when I hit 50 mph it is definitely noticeable! I will was still good at 55 mph. Massive grin on my face. I like the truck but the noise seriously made me think about a trade for the unmentionable FORD. I love the look of the Ford 150 Tremor with a front leveling kit.

The rubber seal or gaskets, not sure the exact name, seem cheap and flimsy not to mention fit seems a bit loose especially when compared to my 2010 Tundra (which is very quiet).

 

But I will say when I'm stopped at an intersection there is a TON more cabin noise compared to my 2010. You can really hear the cars going by. I had to make sure all the windows were shut. Realistically this truck will just be louder than 2010 and I'll have to accept it. Only other option is to sell and get my son a 2019-2021 with low miles and take my 2010 back. Gas mileage between the two really isn't that different.
