I had the same issue with my 23 TRD sport and it drove me crazy. Took it into the dealer and they said it was an Apple issue they couldn’t address….makes no sense as my previous Fors and Ram both muted the music .

I ended up installing an android 14” screen to replace my factory 8”…and guess what….it mutes the music during texts etc as it should.

same problem here. I noticed the greyed out area which I naturally believed the fix would be, but figured since I only have a platinum, it is one of those "you dot get this feature" in the software. I look forward to your update on the 16th. THX for posting this!!!

Having the same issue on my brand new 24 limited. Very annoying. Also I can't figure out how to make the text message alerts quieter. They are so loud, then I can barely even hear the message when siri reads it when I have music on.

You can adjust the system voice and driving assist volume in Settings>Sound and Music>Levels.

Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the problem of the music not automatically muting when Siri reads text messages.

Mine doesn’t allow me to adjust the ringtone, new message and received volume for some reason:

I just checked mine again, and now my Ringtone, New Message, and Received volumes are grayed out too. Weird.

This is one of my biggest annoyances with my truck. To reiterate the problem:

    1. Using CarPlay with the music playing.
    2. Incoming text message alert displays.
    3. Select the message and Siri reads the message, but the music doesn't mute, so you can't hear the message being read.

The only solution I've found is to quickly turn the music off by pushing the volume control knob, then select the message. But you have to be quick, because the massage alert only stays visible for 1-2 seconds, and it's an extra step that shouldn't be necessary.

Incoming and outgoing calls work as expected. The music automatically mutes as soon as you place or accept a call. Voice text messaging should too. Every time I see this thread pop back up, I hope that someone has found a solution.

do you know if this is an issue with all the new tundras or is it just the ones with the upgraded JBL system?

Same problem with my new 2024 Tundra Platinum. First Toyota for me, every other vehicle I’ve had with car play does not have this issue.

I can tell you I just bought a 24 SR5 without the JBL, my settings in Sound and Media are also greyed out. This is super annoying for me since I replaced the speakers and put in aftermarket amps, my ringtones, notifications, and text reading voices are excruciatingly loud and there's no way to turn them down! I had the same set up in my 21 Tacoma, and I could adjust those volumes through the radio menu as well as using the volume button on the steering wheel. I do also miss the native split screen view of the map and radio information. I listen to Satellite Radio and sometimes if there's an unfamiliar song it was nice to have that displayed. Now with the massive screen, you have to fumble and switch through the menu to see what's playing. I could live with that, but not being able to turn down the volume of incoming notifications or calls really has me disappointed because my only other option at this point is to turn off my phone completely which not only means no notifications, but no Apple Car play either

My issue is the radio volume does not go down when listening to or sending a text. The lack of split screen is horrible as well. Bigger screen that does one thing at a time is silly
Not impressed with this truck. Traded in a 2021 Lariat and am so far amazed at the stupid little things that are overlooked.

Wow. Just upgraded from my 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro to the 2024 Tundra Platinum. I was coming home today from having the clear bra and tint done at the dealer. Jammin' to some tunes and wanted to send a text. Hit the voice activation, saw the siri symbol on the screen but couldn't hear a damn thing. My Tacoma would mute the music . . . I'll have to play with the Siri volume on the steering wheel. Does it remember or do you have to do it every time?

Sadly, this is continuing problem. I was hoping the most recent head unit update would fix it, but no joy. The only way around it is to either turn the music off, or turn the volume down, before you dictate or listen to text messages using Siri.

Just took delivery of my Platinum Tundra and have the same issue as described. Driving home from the dealer and couldn't hear the text. Assumed that this was surely just a setting that I would have to toggle on the "mute media while using Siri" or something similar............um nope. I have owned/rented/ridden in many cars sense the advent of both plug in and wireless CarPlay and I cant remember one that had this issue.

I know how many computers and similar tech items my truck has because my closing guy reminded my 10 times while trying to sell a warranty. I guess they need one more computer.

Nope. I opened a ticket with Toyota USA. They referred me to my dealer and I've left their customer success person four messages - nada. Now I just turn down the music to use Siri with CarPlay. Super frustrating though.

Has anyone had any luck with a software update at a dealership ? My service dept hasn't heard about this issue (weird). So, I don't want them messing with my truck if there is no fix right now.

Honestly, I would have never bought a TUNDRA if this was told to me ahead of time.

Between that and the host of other annoyances? I definitely regret my 23 platinum. After 18k miles my list is long.

    The volume thing is annoying

JBL sound system is very disappointing. And the surround sound option in the settings makes it sound terrible for some reason…

Even if you’re subscribed to the app to remote unlock you can not lock the keys in the truck ever. Unless you throw them in the window and roll it up I guess?

The keyfob has a 50’ range at best with a direct line of sight. More like 15’ if there’s obstacles.

The remote start is pointless unless you’re going to use the app to do it from far away because for some reason the truck shuts off completely as soon as you unlock it.

the inside feels so cheap compared to my old Toyotas and other vehicles. Everything creaks if you put any pressure on it, including the stupid little storage area in the middle of the console. The fascia suffers from this as well. Feels incredibly cheap. Even with a 1 finger press the whole thing will flex and creak.

There’s very little storage room inside compared to most half tons. Speaking of which. Has anybody opened their glovebox? You have enough room in there for maybe 10 paper towels and an envelope maybe but even that’s gonna be a tight fit.

The steering wheel cruise control buttons frequently require multiple presses to work.

If I'm idling at a stop light or in a drive thru for more than a minute or 2 something under the hood starts to sound like a typewriter being used in front of a megaphone.

The seats having the plastic bracket for the seat controls coming up into the bottom of the cushion is noticeable and uncomfortable (I’m a bigger guy so that may just be me but I’ve never had the issue in other trucks).

Using my truck for work it would be nice to have a 12v outlet that wasn’t in the dash and a 120v that wasn’t in the back seat.

Doesn’t feel like Toyota is making vehicles to the same standards they used to. And it doesn’t feel like they stand behind them like they used to.

Only real reason I could recommend this truck to somebody is if they just want compliments on how nice the truck looks and that it holds its value best in the segment. Other than that I can’t really think of anything that sets Toyota above the competition like they used to.

Resurrecting this thread from the dead to see if anyone has heard anything new from Toyota?

The problem still exists for me even after the most recent head unit software update.

    Very annoying.

Got a new 2025 1794 a few months ago and once I realized the problem went on the threads and saw it's been an issue. Called Toyota and they said when an update comes they'll send me a first class letter - since then I've heard nothing. Now I just flood any social media I see from Toyota - I leave a message stating great truck crappy tech and that they should hire a new IT crew to fix what should be a simple fix/update.
