If spending 70k on a truck, that’s the one to get. Don’t get why people pay 70k for a Tundra

The LEDs are nice....no arguement there. I would pay 55-58ish for a Tundra.

I probably would trust them as much or more than my TTV6 or at least on par! I mean Euro has past the point where these things fail but most of us are sitting on the impending doom that Toyota has given us!

I don't mind the idea of driving mine till it fails but since I use it for towing and trips involving distance with the trailer. I am not too sure if I want to get stuck in the middle of no where with my truck and trailer. My confidence has been shattered with this truck!

I am not too excited about unloading it and taking a big loss either.

It is weird that my last Toyota was a 73 Celica but that was a great little car! My 22 Tundra is my first vehicle that I don't trust to get the job done.

I hear that! I am not one to worry about these things in general but when I have a trip planned and my family, it just makes me wonder if we are going to make it. Bringing out a wrecker to tow the truck is one thing but dealing with my trailer is another. I am sure that a Chevy V8 would have its share of issues and perhaps implode as well. A Ram or Ford, same sort of situation. I guess this is the landscape we all are playing in these days!

I guess my expectations are muddied by the stellar reputation that Toyota seems to have and what I am seeing. Did they trip and fall on their face with the Gen 3 Tundra? Will they get up and move forward to make it as good as their reputation would dictate, I don't know. If Toyota took the problem and corrected it proactively, that would certainly instil some confidence in the company. So far it seems that this is a secret that no one wants to talk about except for the internet.

I have a small business that requires me to be at sites. If I don't make it because my transportation fails me, that has a ripple effect on others who have hired my company. There are so many times that I could use the "My engine failed" excuse before it gets old. I guess I could get the tow truck driver to swing by the sites and drop me off :) I guess my dependance on "reliable" transportation is a high priority for my business and when we do get to slice out some time for a trip, we want to be able to take the trip, and not have to rent an F250 to tow the trailer.

To be fair, I don't know of anyone, personally, that has had a TTV6 failure other than members of this forum. I don't use FB so I don't get all that quality info.

A GM light duty motor I agree. Anything with cylinder deactivation I try to avoid. Now the HD motor lineups mostly do not have this (except Ram).

That is a rabbit hole for this guy.

Diesel today. Now if I lived in a place that didn't have mountain passes everywhere and no long towing...gas all the way.

Gas, without hesitation. But, my reasons may differ from others’.

I use my vehicle for (my job) work, so part of the costs are covered by them.

I purchase and own the vehicle. If I buy a gasser, I save ~$10K.
I maintain the vehicle. Gassers are cheaper to maintain (oil, filters, you name it). Gassers don’t typically eat up tires as fast…

Work pays for 100% of my fuel. I don’t care about the difference in mileage, which can be argued to be offset by the typically higher price per gallon.

Either engine option in a new HD will pull anything I need to haul.
A diesel will have higher resale, but it doesn’t pencil out to a savings in my situation, by a substantial margin.

When I finally get tired of my Tundra, I’m eyeballing a new F350 with the 7.3 gasser pretty hard. A GM 3500 is second choice.

Not sure after post COVID crazy market and hyper inflation but diesel HDs used to be the world champ in value retention. You could own them a long time and put crazy miles on them and sell them for tons. Demand always outstripped demand by a wide margin.

Not so sure that is the current state with loaded diesels being 90-100k rigs. They maybe entering high end kraut burner territory if you can afford a used one you can afford to spring for a new one

Some really good points. My highest cost on the Duramax is tires. I'm on the 5th set at 98750 miles. I went back to BFG KO2's, so they should last a bit longer and so far wear has been a lot slower.

I agree with everything except "resale". Take a 5 year old truck, same mileage. One with a diesel and one with gas. Bet there is about 5-8k difference between the two (the diesel that you paid 10k for). From my experiences, no difference in resale.

    HD trucks are for:

    Daily farm/ranch work.

    Towing significant loads/payloads safely.

Purchase price. One can get into a HD truck for at or cheaper than a light duty truck. Sadly, this is true.

What HD trucks are not great for:

Daily driving. If you ever DD a HD, you know what I'm talking about. Cost is big factor...read on.

Fuel economy. Yes my diesel on long trips empty does 18.5-22 mpg, but this is not my focus or concern. Arriving relaxed and safe is. The gas counterparts with 10 speed transmissions do rather well in this department in comparison to older HD trucks. The older HD trucks get pretty low numbers...but let's face it, this is not why someone buys a HD truck.

Cost. Not going to sugar coat anything. When you do need to replace parts, it will be expensive (gas or diesel). Tires cost more (if a 1/2 ton owner stays with P Metric tires), oil changes are sometimes more. My local dealership charges 74.00 for filter and oil. I can barely beat that doing it myself. However I am doing myself...so I know it's right.
Brakes will be more. I'm at 98,750 miles and my brakes are still 70%. However, it will be double the cost when I do replace rotors and pads (like 700+).

All things to think about. My HD sits in the garage until needed for towing or blowing snow.
