OEM or OEE? Safelite wants about $760 more to install OEM glass, which I'm happy to pay if there's any benefit. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I'd prefer not to use my insurance. I have a high deductible in any case.

Comprehensive claim doesn’t effect your premium as it behooves of your insurance to have a functional, non obstructed windshield. Typically it’s just a $500 deductible. You’re paying more than that regardless of either option. Because even if you go with the cheaper satellite, you still need to pay $3-500 to have the sensors recalibrated.

OK, good to know. I guess you're saying however that OEM is preferable to OEE

I swear I read somewhere that sometimes there are issues getting the sensors to calibrate when not using oem. I know for me I'll only use OEM.

A comprehensive claim absolutely counts. Any claim is a “mark” on you. Too many claims and it’s bye bye with many auto insurers. Doesn’t have to be at fault accidents, although those are definitely counted against you and your rates. Had a buddy that drove gravel roads for work everyday had 3 windshield claims in one year and Allstate dropped him.

    Alot of them
Stay away from Safelite. Use a reputable and locally owned glass company. Your local dealerships will tell you who they send their glass work too. Safelite uses Chinese branded glass. When they tell you that they can get OEM if you pay additional, they are full of crap. It's OOE, not OEM. They can't get OEM glass, especially for a 2018. I had the windshield in my 2020 replaced a few months ago. There are only a couple of companies that make the OEM glass. My original was made by Vitro. The new one is OOE and is a PGW. PGW/Vitro are the same company. Some will debate calibration of the sensor. Shops will say that it's required....money for them of course. If the sensor is removed but NOT disconnected, it will not need a calibration. Mine was done this way and I have not had a single issue at all. On another note, Safelite will not touch a vehicle that has any type of lift or leveling kit on it.

I had my 2019 windshield replaced at Safelite with no issues at all, the particular Safelite I use was a Giant glass before and has been around for decades, and I've used the many times. I've had 0 issues with the replacement and sensors, dont know if it was OEM or not but my insurance covers glass 100%. Only claims that count against you, at least in Massachusetts are at fault accidents, an insurance company can't possibly hold a broken windshield against you unless maybe you smashed it yourself.

Guess it all depends on your state and insurance company. Electric insurance in Massachusetts has 0 deductible on glass and Massachusetts has a state mandated insurance rate and point system, its a reason why many insurance companies dont offer insurance in Massachusetts because its hard to be competitive. But 100% sure that here in MA only at fault and moving violations affect your rate. You can actually just call your insurance company and ask them if something will count against you if you file a claim, they will let you know so you can decide what makes more sense for you.

Key word. “Might”. Guess it depends where you live and who your carrier is. But moral of the story, stick with oem if you can.
