Easy killer, I thought you meant straight pipe the whole exhaust. If you delete the cats it will throw codes, so you'll have to get O2 simulators. I'd just do hi flow cats and call it good.

And no, I'm not a Harley rider.

Computer will bitch. There's an upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (after-cat) O2 sensor. Their whole job is to analyze the exhaust before it hits the cat and after it leaves the cat, then calculate how much shit got filtered out. If the amount filtered isn't within a specific range, you'll throw 'cat inefficiency' codes (P0420/P0430) saying your cats are bad.

Other than that, the upstream/pre-cat sensor also measures your combustion mixture straight outta the head so the ECU/ECM understands if it's running rich or lean, so it can adjust accordingly. Ideally, you really want to keep the upstream intact. What you could do is do straight pipe, but have a shop weld a bung on for the upstream O2, then have them toss a right-angle bung a little further down for the downstream. Then use O2 spacers (with adjustable inserts, AKA a "non-fouler") to space the downstream sensor off the pipes, so the O2 sensor "sees" less emissions ... that may take a little playing with, to get it spaced/sniffing correctly, but ...

 

Oh - and to your point ... yes, you could find a way to gut the cats, which leaves the O2s intact.

Then get a right-angled non-fouler for the downstream sensors after, and figure out the right combo on the downstream that prevents the ECU from throwing the codes I mentioned.

Just remember, whatever's inside those cats is $$$, that's why all the meth heads want to steal the f'n things. So if you do clear 'em out, make sure you find a recycler who'll take the internals for $$.

 

Right on home. There worth more as a set than in prices. I'm trying to recoup some money for getting the 4wd sorted. Not sure if i want to try junk yard hoping for a couple months. Depends on the tire size. If 35's yes it'd feel a bit underpowered. If it has 4.88 or higher it's probably fine but the rpms may be high.


If you want an LSD now is the time. If a street only vehicle avoid a locker. Get a true trac or powertrax lsd (gear driven torsen).


I wouldn't remove or gut the cats personally. You could look at removing the flowmasters and doing resonators to remove any rasp. You could talk to keith/@dirtydeeds about exhaust options.

 

Right on. Thanks for the help. I'll do that. Would you go 4.56 or 4.88 or 5.29. I would be doing occasional road trips with this truck and have no plans on ever selling it. I think the lsd would payoff dividends in the long run. The guy at East coast suggested 4.56 gearing. What do you suggest.

 

For 35's I'd go 4.88. Especially if going on trips out of the flatlands.

Math wise the 4.56 is closest to stock rpms but doesn't take into account the extra mass of larger tires. Plus the 4sp trans can use a little extra help.


If an 05-06 with a 5sp that has a better gear spread the 4.56 could be acceptable.

 

Awesome Man. Makes sense. Is 5.29 overkill or have any extra benefit ir downfall.

 

Way overkill. Rpms will be sky high. Unless you're planning for 40"+ tires.

Hey Assassin-There is 2004 Tundra 4x4 SR5 AC that threw a cylinder and doesnt run. I found on criagslist. It has well over 200K. It is stock. Is it worth getting the front and rear differential or any other parts from it. Do you happen to know if the gears are same size compatible with the 2001? 7.5/8.4 inch. He doesnt know what gears size he has. I may go there saturday morning if the price is right and take what I can from it.

 

AC sr5 V8 4x4 will have 3.9's. should be a direct swap except maybe the rear pinion flange.
