I used 5w-20 Penzoil my last oil change at 65k miles. All previous changes from new were the 0W-20. Is it ok to use the 5w-20 for a Northern NJ winter with trips to Vermont? Or should I go back to the 0w-20 for the winter?

I'm not to mechanically savvy, hence the reason I'm asking

I'll admit to not knowing 100% but personally I wouldn't deviate from whats documented in the owners manual but that's just me.

I personally don’t know the technical aspect of it either. But I’d be interested to know if you used the penz 0w20 that says it’s compatible for 5w-20 or just the straight 5w20 this has always confused me as if you can run whatever what’s the point of oil spec lol

Use the 5W-20 and don't look back. Let that big ole V8 warm up a bit when you head out on a cold morning/day/night.

    I run 5W-30.

The owners manuals for these motors call for anything from 0w20 all the way up to 15w40 and everything in between. Literally run whatever you want, it won't matter.

Do some searches on here for how many motors fail due to oiling issues. Let us know what you find.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. Was starting it at 8 F a week ago. Not a hiccup, no nothing. Don't even see any MPG difference with 0w20.

    I'd run 5w30 for the 5.7. Even a 40 for summer.

I have feeling especially Gen3 will benefit from thicker oil.

    Very well.

I know nothing of the weight of a lubricant. I consider API designations from my manufacturer and then consider a grade that best suits my application.

If I have to start carrying a scale around to measure the mass of engine lubricant then I'm out and going straight to EV... immolation risks be damned.

Do you hear me, @Eurodriver ?! Done, I says!!

Also, any 20 grade oil is piss water. Even 15W/20.

None that I'm aware of, I'm at 32k on my truck. Has there been reports of it burning?

No, but I've only put about 2k miles on it. Truck has a hair over 20k. 5k oil change interval.
I never burned oil in either Tundra I had, but both were basically new

I’ve been running the PUP in 0w20 and 5w30 and my truck is consuming some oil between changes. I haven’t tried other oils to track other brands consumption.

Seems somewhat common for Toyota's from other posts, forums, and YouTube I've seen. How many miles on your truck?

I doubt it matters on oil brand. But, who knows.

I also add a bottle of stp zddp treatment at oil changes. With our 5.7 vvti chain tensioner issue it can only help.

It all depends on what oil your using. Some manufacturers limit the amount of zinc. We dont want too much but having it around 1100ppm helps lubricate. If I ran Rotella brand I wouldn't add zinc since it's about 1200ppm zinc. Just a crazy Redneck idea...
