Transmission drain and fill ~60K miles

    My 2020 is a little over 60K miles. Reading up on this site and it seems that a simple drain and fill of the transmission is all I need. I do have a transmission cooler installed since like 15K miles so temps didn't get too high.

    My question is this: consensus is that a drain will get about 4 quarts out, putting in 4 fresh quarts is that all that is needed at 60K? Or do i need to do multiple in a row to try and get all 12(?) quarts out?

    I've watched the videos and feel pretty confident I can set level correctly with my OBD scanner and OBD fusion app, not a terribly complicated process. I don't want to take to shop if i don't have to, but if i have to do 3 drain and fills in a row it may be a possibility.

    One drain and fill is fine at 60k.

    Make sure to pin the thermostat on your cooler.

    4-6qts will come out. Depends on drain time and if you pin the stat before drain. I would weigh the fluid when done or measure with a non-kitchen use measuring cup. Put the same amount back in or slightly more. Then check level at proper temp.

    If you don't have a OBD scanner that can read transmission pan temperature, there's a video out there from Car Care Nut on how to do it without one.

    Yup got the little pins ready so i can pin it. So I should pin it open before I drain? I know about pinning it open when checking level, and that the engine needs to be running and transmission in park and If I remember right temp is 99-111? . I have an OBD scanner using an app called OBD fusion that shows me trans pan and T/C temps so I'm good on that end.

    You should be fine with doing it once.

    Just curious, since you have OBD Fusion, did you check your ATF thermal degradation calculation?

    More comes out if you pin before drain. Doesn't matter if you do before or during check. Either way, at 60k, you will be fine.

    No need to pin on your 2020 due to the fact that you can't. With the deletion of the trans cooler also means you do not need to pin a thermostat. Literally the only good thing about the missing cooler.

    I have a cooler installed from genuinecoolingsystems.com It came with the OEM thermostat and everything.

    Don't pin it, drain it and measure. Should be around 4 qt. Put back 4 quarts. Or pin it and measure and see what comes out. Put back what came out. +/- a bit won't do anything to the trans. Dont over think it. @60k I would probably do 2-3 drain and fills, but that's just me. I am @35k and have done 3 already, but that was because I also added the trans cooler. Done the rear dif twice. Power steering once and brake fluid once. Now just wait till 60k.

    Car Care Nut recommendations:

    -Oil & Filter: 5k miles or 6mo.
    -Transmission Fluid (drain/fill): 60k or 6yrs. (OE)
    -Coolant: (1st time) 100k or 5yrs. (2nd time, on) 50k or 5yrs. (OE)
    -Differential & Transfer Case: 30k (OE or aftermarket)
    -Power Steering Fluid (OE or aftermarket Fluid)
    -Brake Fluid, inspect at 3 years (aftermarket)
    -Sparks Plugs: 120k (OE)

    decent list. Transfer case and front diff can go way longer for most people that don’t hardcore off-road. Rear diff is the one doing all the work, 30-60k is a good change interval for it. I’ve never had front diff or transfer case fluid look anything but brand new when changing.

    It was my first 30k interval so I wanted to get the factory oils out. Adding to that, I had a decent amount of metal sheers on the magnet nut during the change on both front & rear so I was pleased with the change. The transfer case fluid however looked brand new, but did notice it shifting much smoother.

    Transfer case I used Ravenoil 75W, can't find it on Amazon anymore but here it is on another site.

    Another good choice for the transfer case is Redline MT-LV. It's a 75W oil and is GL4 compatible.

    Also using the Redline in my transfer case, 4WD performs the same as OEM oil.

    Rear diff and front diff got Valvoline FS at 30,000 miles.

    Engine gets QS FS at 5,000 mile intervals.

    Drain/Fill tranny at 30,000 with OEM Toyota WS fluid.

    Coolant will get swapped next summer, because my truck is 5 years old and will use OEM pink stuff.

    So everyone talking about drain and fill tranny is just one cycle of drain then refill ? I guess it’s the additives that’s important to replenish in the ATF?

    Thanks. I checked mine at 63k miles, i installed a cooler at 59k miles. Im currently at 3699, gives me a reference.

    Once is fine. There are some post around where people have had the fluid tested after 100k and it comes back fine. The color of the fluid turns dark quickly anyways and is not a good tell-tale for oil quality. In short, even 60k drain and refill is most likely overkill. There is little reason to go beyond that and do it multiple times. Just drain, refill then do it again in another 30k or so.

    My first two drain and fills on my 09 were consecutive oil changes at 55 and 60k and another a couple years later and it shifted like new when sold at 13 years and 113k.
