Well, after 18 months of ownership I sold her, got $60k for it with the bumper, winch, lightbar and decked system- stripped everything else off. Moving to a GEN 2 Seqouia TRD pro, army green. Makes more sense for our family and i gotta be honest, as @Eurodriver put it, it’s hard to simp for the new tundra after 18 months.

    things I loved:
    The power
    The tech
    The luxury
    The looks

    things I hated:
    Build quality- gaps everywhere
The rattles, every week a new one popping up
    Wind noise
    Truck payment
    The resale value
The lack of trust in the vehicle- thing is bound to leave you high and dry
Long term reliability, long term resale, long term build quality

I’ll keep everyone posted on the new build, going be bronze F5’s, 34’s or 35’s, to start a westcott kit up front, reservoir rear shocks w/ adjusters (dobbys if I can find em), rear springs and airbags, Baja lights all over, if we love it (aka the wife) I’ll do the 18+ Seqouia front end swap on it

    inspiration from @Devildawg712

Oof. At least it’s off your plate though.

If for some reason I need to move on from our ‘09 LX, which I don’t see happening any time soon, a 20-21 2nd gen Sequoia with low miles will most likely replace it. Extremely underrated vehicles.

I saw one on the highway the other day with the front end Tundra conversion. Looked good.

super underrated… I’ve got my eye on a local Land Cruiser and LX but unfortunately they are just a tad to small for us… but dang so I want one!

What did you pay for it originally and how many miles were on it when you sold it?

That’s pretty good since the market changed and it was modified, with almost 20k on it

    you think that’s bad ?

Did that include all the stuff you put on the truck or did you take off most your aftermarket gear?

Highly respectable move. You live once so a few grand here and there on the things you love and bring you value and happiness won’t make anyone go broke.
The 3rd gen is really nice but like you said I don’t know when I will be ready to give up that V8 sound.

$70k "plus tax" is at least $75k

All those mods in the signature (bumpers, armor, Adventure Motors lift, extensive lighting, winch, cap) I'd bet are probably $15k at minimum.

Selling for $25-30k less (if I'm way off please correct me) after 18 months probably stings a bit.

It's interesting how you went from a newer generation Toyota, to previous generation which has pretty old technology.

No adaptive cruise control, no big screen, no hybrid fuel economy - that's a big one?

What was your reasoning to give up these items and go into the old and fuel thirsty sequoia?

Wish you best by the way, it's a great suv!

That level of depreciation I know from selling tundras with 60-90k miles usually

Bumper, tint, decked system, Baja designs fogs, lightbar, winch

luckily I get a lot of the parts for free, cost or trade so way cheaper

My builds I’d like to think are always legit, love building vehicles… my dad always had vintage power wagons and Alfa Romeo’s growing up so it’s genetic…. My tastes are just more expensive

this Seqouia will be VERY similar… kept a bunch of stuff from that build so hopefully transition the Seqouia build to what that one was

wish that was mine, that’s the end goal… plus more

Assuming my 3yo’s 104 fever doesn’t get worse tonight I’m set to leave at 6am on 2 flights, drive an hour, check out the vehicle, fight with them over the “shipping charge” then repeat the process and get home at 10pm tomorrow night

agreed, but I can buy this Seqouia and have it paid off in a year vs 4.4 years and know that I can run it into the ground after that for minimal cost vs spending $2k every time a computer chip goes haywire after that warranty is up

See above, luckily kept a lot of the stuff, sold the topper today for $2k, didn’t spend that much on all the parts, so want THAT bad

sequoia has lane departure, adaptive cruise, push start, BSM, etc. hybrid fuel economy once “kitted out” was 3-4mpg better than my comparable old tundras, I’ll trade that for reliability. Big screen loss sucks, same with 360 cameras- but aftermarket can fix big screen and the frac system gets me a front camera.

honestly if we could afford the $1.2k a month to lease a diesel Yukon xl we’d be all over it, but f that car payment in a single income household with 2 young kids

I sort of get what the OP concerns are. They feel more comfortable with a well established platform.
One of if not THE reason to buy a Toyota is for its reliability. Not sold on that, get out of it.
I hedged my bets with an extended warranty. Him, got a Seqouia TRD pro = happy. Enjot those miles.

Warranty notwithstanding, that's ridiculous logic. Who wants to be beholden to a service dept. for what *should be* a reliable new Toyota Tundra?
Don't blame the OP one bit.

LOL, pretty old technology. Ask Toyota why their total redesign Tundra got old TSS 2.5 vs 3.0 then. MPG on the hybrid is non-existent compared to a non hybrid. It was for towing not MPG.
This has to be a sarcastic post, it has to be.
But you did get the "it's a great SUV" part right.

I have been toying with the idea of letting go of my tundra and switching up to a large SUV. Don't really use my bed for anything and prefer a SUV for trips. Just went on a 3k trip in the wife's 23 RDX and it's nice to have the rear space for bags, keeping them dry and out of sight and the ride is so much better.

yea, we use the truck as a truck a few times a year and I can always borrow or rent one when needed, or use one of my many trailers to haul whatever with the Seqouia. The extra seating is what we really need and interior storage space for road trip stuff.

Biggest issue in going to face/ hate with Seqouia is the tiny gas tank- no one has figured out a solution yet but I’m going to

Wouldn't the larger tank for the tundra work? Same chassis, no? I will say that I have never been a fan of larger tanks. Just the thought of having to fill it up gets to me. I know in the end it's the same but still. I did take my tundra ain the same 3k trip I just did and really didn't find it that bad having to fill up. With the tundra and the RDX I would fuel up anyways anytime the wife had to use the bathroom. She wouldn't be able to go the extra miles of a bigger tank anyways. She can barely go half of the RDX tank and thats a 17g tank.
    Enjoy the new SUV.

different rear suspension so no dice, but I’ll figure something out!
Where I live having gas is important on trips.
