What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I don't remember this. When did you use POR15? I used the kit I linked but I only had to treat a small area on my frame.

I'm just not sure how much John will need. I suggested a needle scaler too.

 

Search the forum for the words skin gloves posted by my username you’ll find a myriad of warnings. All but the BMF thread here are examples of that, read the text on these results. I “was a badass” the first time I used it many, many moons ago, and had the evidence to show what a badass I was for several weeks after. Kept finding new spots where I didn’t realize I got some, sometimes with others pointing them out, for at least 10-14 days. If small enough you can slough it off with old skin, and a grinder/sander/emory board works. I had limited success with legit acetone and even tried MEK with limited fanfare. At least superglue comes off with acetone. This stuff… ugh.

A word of caution on electric scooters. Those fkrs are dangerous! Last week my brother in law who practically lives on 2wheels either mountain biking, dirt bike or race bike went to the hospital cause of an electric scooter.

Multiple skull fractures, spine fractures, broken ribs, shoulder plate… scary but thankfully he’s home now with a long road of recovery ahead of him.

In the past week I’ve learned electric scooters make up a decent part of emergency room visits in big cities yet I always viewed them as fun kid-ish toys.

Honestly you just want to knock off anything loose & seal it from O2.
Those kits are for getting down to bare metal, treating the bare metal, & protecting it. That's entry level restoration which is beyond what the underbellly of a truck bed in the south needs.
Grab a bottle of naval jelly if you wanna go crazy. I usually pay more for 2 pints of POR-15 instead a quart. Had a quart go hard on me once, so I'd rather have two smaller portions - enough to be sure i get the job done, less risk of expensive product going bad.

I'd love for you to get a wet sandblasting set up (fairly cheap), try it out & let me know if it's something worth owning. The concept seems promising.

I rode one of those rentals. Not a cool fast one.

helmets are a good idea. Knowing how to fall helps, too. The one i rode had soft brakes, so a full squeeze didnt lock it up, and barely squeezing let it freewheel or coast more than letting off the throttle.

 

Whimsy - the stickers I left are a vintage pickup truck, a black lab & a flag that matches my heritage.

 

kinda feel darkening your sills would balance the truck w/ those high clearance bumpers. Just not such a dark black.

John moved here from Iowa. His truck has rust. The goal is to treat the frame with the bed removed. I've never heard that POR-15 is to be used on bare metal.

Also, I got a better look at the replacement bed today. These area need to be addressed.

 

@FirstGenVol POR-15 can be used on bare metal if you use the metal prep and degreaser as instructed. If you don’t, it’ll flake off in weeks.

 

I get that. I thought he was saying it's only used on bare metal. I used that exact kit 3 years ago and it's holding up great. It was not bare metal. I cleaned the surface and painted right over the rust.

I'm just asking for advice on what to do about the rust. I'm thinking we just wire wheel what we can to knock off the chunks that are loose and then hit it with POR-15. I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than that right?

 

Yep, you don’t need the metal prep if it’s over rust, just bare metal. I wouldn’t go without the degreaser though once done. Wire wheel is best especially if you have a decent compressor to use. Hand wire brush will work too if you don’t mind the work.

Cut the liner around bolts to free them up and am gonna grab a T55 to try and make sure the others all spin. Except…this one is gonna be a problem:

I totally agree about knowing how to fall, but i can only assume that if he ride mountain bikes, dirt bikes, and race bikes that he knows how to fall? But that’s only my assumption. I’ve seen MANY a dirt bike riders, mountain bikers, road racers fall in the most inelegant way. I skated both rollerblades (both ramp and street, so lots of handrails) and skateboard for at least 20 years. I would say that we know how to take a fall better than anyone else. BUT, there are always times when the fall goes not quite as planned. Preferably that when you’re wearing a helmet. FYI, i rarely wore a helmet skating unless it was required at the skate park. But yeah, i’ve had many head bonks on handrails, masonite, and concrete...both with and without wearing a helmet. I got less dizzy and nauseous from the head slams while wearing a helmet though.

 

Yuck! What also works super fast is using a wire wheel on a angle grinder to remove the bedliner from the bolt heads as well as from inside the torx hole.

 

I would go ahead and buy that torch too.

However, i hate the side moulding on our trucks. In fact just today i removed the molding from the bed side which doesnt have holes behind it, just adhesive. If I could get rid of the whole side moulding i would in a heartbeat.

Replacement bolt should be 64189-0C011. Some diagrams show a shim at the base of the bolt, that's only for stepsides. According to the diagram, the AC and DC both share the same number of bolts. RC trucks use two add'l forward-most bolts, I assume for the longer bed.

Singularity or uniqueness?

 

No, I mean the bed length is different. It's like 18" longer. Bolt part number I believe are all the same [edit: for non-stepside]. Based on the diagram, looks like RC tkes 8, AC and DC take 6. And the diagram shows a separate part number for stepsides, but I can't see if because it's not a fit for my VIN.

Shows in the diagram though, different part number for stepside bed bolts. The lower bolt here, with a shim under it. "SSD ONLY" is "StepSiDe only", if I'm not mistaken (or SportSiDe or something). Diagram makes it look like it's a fatter bolt.

My bed has 6 but Toyota site says 8 of these 64189-0C011. I bought 8 before I double checked. Oh well.

 

Warn powdercoats their stuff an argent grey. It's a great color that complements pretty much any other color. It seems to always look waaaay better than any shade of black.
