I was raised on a ranch. 4H/FFA, owned my own cattle (Herefords) and owned and rode 4 quarter horses and rarely wore cowboy boots. ( wide instep) definitely had a 5X beaver Resistol C hat and followed Larry Mahan's career as best all a round C boy for 6 or 7 years I think. I never looked looked "the part". Hate fake dime store cowboys. All hat no cattle.

Apple used to use google maps. Irony.

Apple has a long way to go before they can ever match googles power or driod power.

Sorry sean.. had to do it.

Thread is fun and all. Everyone likes ford razzing. But that ditch is huge. Not only that, linked, extended arms, 3.0 bypasses front and rear, full cage....there's nothing "Ford" left of that suspension. @Relentless nailed it. Prerunning is for a reason.
Same thing would have happened with a Toyota. Worse if it was any of the Toyota's on this forum.

    Another angle to show it:

He's lucky he wasnt a tad slower. Would have totally stuffed it into the bank and been an extremely abrupt stop, as well and possibility to front flip that thing.

It's clear that the (dry) washout has been there for more than a few days. Possibly weeks. Right in the middle of the road. Also a lot lot of weeds growing in the road. A lot of weeds. Should have been a clue that the road was lightly traveled at best. What was the spotter/co-pilot doing? Texting? You know, maybe slow down. Attention to detail like that is important. No one in their right mind pre-runs wlly nilly. Would be foolish to do so and expensive if you screw up. Yes, pre-running is for a reason. Determining pre-race road layout, sharp turns, berms, bumps, dips, rises, jumps, water, mud, speed, on VERIFIED course. Even going back to the early 70's all racing events were scoped out first by talking to the locals, ranchers, other wheelers, dirt bikers, plane/chopper flyovers for any info on road/trail conditions before any attempt at below/near WOT pre-run . What were the weather conditions the last few days? Common sense needs to come into play at this point. Possibly(possibly) lacking in the Raptor incident. Just going by what I see in the pic. First impression was WTF? IMO from my experience attending SCORE,SNORE, NORRA races going back to 1975 to 1978. The most fun was taking time off and getting to a major race a week or two early, such as the Mint 400 or in Ensenada for Baja 500/1000. Set up camp somewhere near a check point along the race course. You would see, talk to Jim Garner, Ivan Stewart, Brian Chuchua(Mr. Jeep), Rod Hall, Walker Evans to name a few. Check out their rides. Everyone and their brother would be out there "pre-running" the course before it was closed to non racers. Most of the severe damage screw ups would happen when racers left the course, fly off the road, hit a jump cockeyed or dip, etc. Not a 6 foot deep washout/mini canyon in the middle of the road covered with weeds. Sheesh.Good old days. Miss Ensenada.:jellydance:(where's the Jiffy pop?)

Thick with irony. Definitely had to be a b*t*h to "recover" it. He did "almost" make it all the way across. Sort of. heh heh. Wouldn't have even happened with my Tundra. I know better. Comes with old age. :mudding:

I'm certainly no stranger to prerunning mistakes. I've run out of talent and brains on more than one occasion.
But it's definitely not a "ford" problem either.

You're right, the only thing "ford" is the motor, hood, maybe rear diff, if it is spec class. That had to really suck for the guys in that Raptor. Probably at lot of fun until they hit the ditch. Instant bummer. I've seen the same thing happen on sand dunes. Those instant drop offs really suck. You don't see them until it's too late. Lines get blurred.Don't ask me how I know. Left my talent and brains somewhere else that day. (I was young and could live forever, not my CJ unfortunately).
