Towing with 37s

Hey guys,

So I've been debating to go from 35s to 37s. I tow a Triton Bass boat with a 250hp mercury. The boat is fully rigged and tournament load with trailer is about 3200-3500lbs. I've been told that towing with 37s is rough.

I was also told that a regear is pointless if my reason to regear is to save freeway miles which I know regear will take away freeway mpg.

My question is, does anyone tow with 37s without regear and do you see a huge drop in performance?

Not sure everyone here would agree that a regear is pointless if you want to tow. Larger tires and new gearing would get you back to a stockish ratio, which is the desired result. I know it's long but dig through the Dirtysevens Thread in the 2.5 Gen section. My 2012 has the 4.3 rear, so consider that, but my opinion is that the truck needs bigger brakes more than gears. On brakeless trailers, if I'm pulling the boat or subcompact tractor (~3500lb) it's fine, if I'm pulling the compact tractor it isn't (~5800lb). 37s put a big hit on braking performance without a trailer involved. Of course that's irrelevant if yours has brakes.

Also of note, I don't slam it up to speed. Maybe my acceptability criteria is lower?

 

Aren't you the one complaining about "poor" fuel economy?

As for 37s with stock gears, you will absolutely feel it. The truck will still run and pull your boat, but you would definitely see an improvement if you regear it properly.

 

I regeared on 33s just for towing and Only regret not having done it sooner. Calculated Load % shows the truck isn't working as hard, too.

 

Yes I did. Lol but I'm trying to cover all bases before I regear getting opinions because regear will be the last thing I do once I decide all my upgraded parts are put on.

It’s been my best upgrade of any add one on my last trucks. Mine is getting 5.29 next month

 

Depends on your expectations, for me towing that weight with 4:30's and 37's would be nothing to worry about.

I went to 5:29's but I tow 8-9K a couple times a week

 

That's good to know and thanks. That's 4:3 was the ratio I was originally looking at.

 

I also went with 5.29s when I put 34” tires on. It is amazing…. Empty is amazing, a towing my 25’ TT is better than when the truck was 100% stock.

Zero appreciable change in fuel economy, but a huge gain in drivability. If someone is telling you that regearing a Tundra will increase your fuel consumption due to increased rpm at speed, they are absolutely mistaken.

Lower gears=more mechanical advantage=less load on engine=more timing advance and less fuel to make the power necessary for the condition.

A lot of people get hung up on the gear ratio in the rear axle and think that a 4.30 ratio is super low. That may be accurate if our 6th gear ratio wasn’t in the 0.57:1 range. It’s a pretty steep overdrive, which kills that “really low” axle ratio. In my opinion, our trucks could use lower gears in stock form…

I always forget that you’re on 4.30s! With your big power, I’m sure it rips, but how does it compare to your dad’s? Isn’t he SC also? Seems like there would be advantage to low gears with them big knobby knobby tires even after SC.


I should clarify that I’d rather slam my dick in a car door than have a N/A Tundra on 37s with stock gears.

 

4:30 is the stock gearing.

 

Haha yea he’s on a whipple also. He definitely thinks 4.88 good for none towing but sometimes in small situations the 5.29 would be nice.

Regear to make the truck not anameically underpowered feeling, makes no considerable difference in mpg in my experience.

 

37s and 5.29 here no problem towing the 6quads and trailer really don’t even feel it.

I think @reywcms needs to grab a trailer and meet up with you. Open both drivers doors and see which one you choose to get in… but if you get in yours, better drop your pants beforehand

At this time, I want to make it perfectly clear that I am only claiming that a door slam to the dick is preferred to driving a NATURALLY ASPIRATED truck with stock gears and 37” tires. Since I don’t have stock gears (or 37” tires) and Rey isn’t N/A, I’m hoping to avoid any opportunity that involves my tallywacker and any swinging part of a truck! lol.

On 37s and stock gears and towing a camper trailer weighing about 3500-4000lbs loaded. Pulls fine but definitely feel the lost of power when going uphill. Planning for 5.29gears soon

Thumb, week before Xmas in third grade. 1980 Caprice Classic, 2 door. Same scenario, in locked latch. Thumb has never fully recovered and neither have I, and thinking about it being a penis, I am nauseous.

I gained 2mpg towing going from 4.30’s to 5.29’s. From 7 to 9 towing a 4 door rzr on a 16’ trailer. No change around town mileage but the truck drives so much better with the 5.29’s and I’m only on 34’s. Can’t imagine being on 37’s.
