“new” used 2022 SR5 2wd — did I make a good choice?

My 1st gen Tacoma is due for a round of repairs and I decided to let it go and get something newer.

Wednesday I purchased a used 2022 SR5 Tundra. I loved my TRD Tacoma but decided I really didn’t need the 4wd on my next truck.

I am reading some of the sky-is-falling threads on here and wondering if I made a good decision. I’m sure the truck was used to tow during its first 25k miles based on the wear to the receiver, but it’s running well and has no signs of abuse.

Toyota redid the frame on my Tacoma before it came to me. I have the idea in my head that Toyota will stand by the Tundras in the long run — I’ve owned WagonVans, Previas, Priuses that have gone 280k and blown their head gaskets and still keep going —

I want to hear thoughts on the truck. CarMax does have a return policy…

On the whole, if the worst case scenario is that I run the risk of having to replace the engine once during a, let’s say, 15 year 200+k life of the truck, I think I can live with that risk.

Long term longevity is a mystery at the moment so nobody can answer that question for you in a statistical sense. I wouldn’t worry about it because there’s no sense in worrying yourself over something that may or may not happen.

some people here will tell you about the various first year issues of the new Tundras including the bearing failures. Supposedly that was a limited run of bearings that failed.

I’m going to tell you that you bought a nice looking truck in the correct color and to enjoy it. If you need help fixing it or have some of the trim issues there’s a lot of knowledgeable people on here to help.

    enjoy your new truck!!

My belief is the days of "10 years with nothing but oil changes" are over across the board due to government mandates that have given us more complicated, increasingly computer governed vehicles. People will still get that but it's not going to be nearly as common or uniform across some makes and models as it was.

Going forward I plan to budget for the premium extended warranty on anything I buy, then enjoy my vehicles without stressing out over things that haven't happened yet. In over 20 years of vehicle buying I said no to extended warranties but that's over now. If I'm likely to hold for more than 5 I'll get the coverage.

Thanks, both of you. I'm sure that I will hear some opposing advice but this is my general sense. And I’ve already ordered the vanity plate...

I do wish the world were simpler and all the new tech weren't necessary for environmental and other reasons, but I have always believed in conservation and I think the attitude of accepting it makes a lot of sense.

I just want to haul my band's gear and furniture for my family and have some more nice road trips and kayak adventures. Not looking for stress.

My payload is usually only band gear driving up to music festivals in Mass and ME. And flowers and trees or my sailboat's outboard. I figure over the life of the truck I'm gonna be in mud once per year, and that's enough of a good reason so save $$$ and have an extra mile per gallon or so. I really never used the 4WD in my Taco in five years owning it -- even on muddy farmland festivals (Yasgur's Farm etc) and in New England winters. I'm a teacher so when the weather gets bad -- I'm good to stay home until the roads are clear anyway.

Looks like a beautiful truck to me. I love the cap matching the MGM color and I am guessing you will have good luck with it.

There rarely is that kind of history on a used truck. I can get a look at the oil before my return window.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
IIRC, used cars don't qualify for that platinum warranty we all simp for. A used SR5 2022 model? We got @eurooffroadkingdriver out here talking about his $42k brand new truck, how much savings is it to get a used one, that's been almost run through original manufacturer warranty?

Not worth it to me unless it's dirt cheap and comes with a 3 year warranty.

I had the platinum VSA on used Tacoma. It was a 2019 that I bought in 2020 at a Toyota dealership and I purchased the platinum VSA from them at that time.

What part of the world do you live in? The lack of four wheel drive will be an issue if have to deal with snow. Other than that, enjoy your Tundra.

Drive and enjoy, plan on new tires soon, I will assume those are factory originals and they will the worst tire in the history of the automobile. I am close to passing 36k on a ‘22 and I actually like it way more now than when I got it about a year ago.

I live in southern New England.

They plow and salt very effectively here — and as a teacher I never have to drive in to work if the roads are bad.

Indeed. No 4 x 4 would not be my choice though, unless I had another vehicle to use when needed. Any 2 wheel drive pickup is bad in the snow.
Weight and good tires help, but are not a substitute for 4x4. Anyhow, enjoy the truck. I don't expect you will be disapointed.

There is certainly nothing " Difficult" . Driving slower, and allowing more distance between vehicles are key. A rear wheel drive vehicle without four wheel drive has very little traction. Particularly in the case of a pickup truck where the weight of the engine is in the front, and there is nothing in the back. Some weight and good snow tires help considerably on a two wheel drive pickup Truck.

Snow isn’t that bad. Just have to reduce your speed and inputs by at least half to account for reduced traction available. Inclines are an issue in the lower traction though. That’s a place 4wd really helps. It also gives you drive on the steer wheels to help with maneuvering. It’s the unknown “Ice factor” lurking beneath that is a great equalizer. Ice don’t care how many wheels you’re spinning.

I wouldn’t pull a large trailer in the snow for long distance. Maybe across town. Recipe for disaster.

Yup. I learned at a young age that I wasn't going to deal with a trailer sans 4x4. Even launching/retrieving a small boat can be a challenge depending on the traction and grade of the boat launch . I tow trailers fairly frequently. I will only have a 4x4 truck.

I wouldn't tow a larger trailer in the snow with or without 4x4.
