Toyo AT3 vs MT Baja Boss AT

Need some feedback.
These are my final two tire selections.
For my offroad use: hunting, fishing, camping, forest roads, BLM roads, both will be fine IMO.

The MT have doubling the siping when compared to the Toyo AT3. I live in ID. Rain, snow, ice, etc. We drive to a ski resort 1-2 times per week on snow/ice roads. Is it safe to say, the MT will do better on snow/ice/rain etc due to increased siping when compared to the Toyo AT3? Local tire shop told me hands down the Toyo AT3 is better in those conditions. However, I can't overlook the significant increase in siping between the two.

The MT do look better IMO which is a bonus.

 

I think you will have non-noticeable, negligible differences between driving and stopping in snow or ice between the 2 tires. I had the MTs on my old 2014 DC and they performed great for me in our lake effect whiteouts.
I’m currently on nittos version of the Toyo at3, the recon grappler (Toyo=Nitto). And have yet to put them to the test for my purposes as we’ve yet to have a real blower yet. I will say the MT’s felt “floaty-er” in real heavy rain than my current Recons that track like sled skis. Should also point out that the MTs are significantly heavier than the Toyos when comparing same size tires. 8 or so lbs more.

If you’re really serious about winter performance, get some dedicated winter tires and stud them if ID allows it. Otherwise I think you’ll be in good shape with either. Get whichever tire blows your skirt up.

 

I have limited experience with the Toyos and none with the MT’s. I’ve looks at them both. As noted above, them Mickeys are significantly heavier than the Toyos but do have much more siping.

Anecdotally speaking, I had to back up an unpaved cabin driveway of at least 30 degrees (no, I’m not joking) with a foot of packed snow under a few inches of fresh snow sitting out in the sun getting warm while it was maybe 15 degrees out - they type of snow that a soon as you spin the tires it turns in to ice. I had Cooper AT3’s with good tread. They had served me well in the same winter conditions you face. Good winter traction on snow covered roads and very predictable when they start to slip. 2wd was a no go for sure (I was already in 4wd just to drive down the road to get to the driveway). 4hi made it 2/3 the way up and spun. 4Lo made it a little further and spun. So I had to use some momentum to get up the hill, which I eventually did.

Another guy I knew showed up in his duramax with new MT AT’s and walked up the same hill without slipping.

From all the reviews I’ve seen as well as taking to people who run them, the Toyo AT3 is about on par with the Cooper AT3’s in the snow - maybe a tad better in some respects but very similar in most. This Mickeys walked all over my Coopers - on a heavier truck with higher tire pressures.

But that weight penalty… ouch. You do get a much deeper tread depth though on the Mickeys. Just my 2 cents.

 

I just went through this exact decision Last month.
I ended up with the Mickey Thompsons.

Your off-roading sounds about identical to mine. We get a ton of rain here, quite a bit of snow and lots of ice.
So far in the rain they are impressive. No snow or ice to speak of yet.
Not really been off-road. I am on tons of gravel and the Toyos probably would have been super rock chuckers with the smaller tread voids. Like my past Michelin and Wildpeaks were. The MTs sling very little gravel with the big tread voids.

They look better I don’t think you are going to really notice much of a difference in performance in climate weather to go wrong with either.
Fella above says weight is a big difference. I guess it depends on size.
I am running 285/70/17 and the MT is only 2 pounds heavier which is negligible.
Especially since I went with new wheels at the time and I am down 14 pounds a corner compared to my stock wheels with 275/60/20 Michelins.

The MTs ended up being like $400 cheaper than the Toyos since MT is currently offering $100 rebate (that gets to you in like 2 weeks).
In the end I’ll be honest that was the biggest reason for me. The Toyos are a great tire, however I don’t think they would be $400 better. Especially since I was buying new wheels that $400 was a huge consideration.

I think the only consideration where Toyo really wins is noise.

I really wanted to go with the new K03s but those were pretty much a non starter in reality because not enough real world examples out there. Figured I would let others get a bunch of miles on them and relook when these need replacing.

 

That's surprising as just about every size I looked at had the MT's much heavier. But, I also wasn't looking at 17 in wheel sizes either. If the difference is only two pounds I would jump on the Mickey Thompsons for sure. Excess weight detracts from mileage, but more so from performance and makes the vehicle feel slow to accelerate and lazy when cornering. IME.

FWIW, Mickey Thompson is made by Cooper now. Who is now owned by Goodyear...

 

AT/3 are doing pretty good in snow. Toyo is top of the line imo. Requires minimal weights to balance etc..
No experience with Mickey Thompson

 

MT 285/70R17 is 63 lbs and is 33" tire.
Toyo AT3 285/75R17 is 63 lbs and is 33.9" tire.

The MT is speed rated for 85 MPH.
Toyo AT3 is speed rated for 128 MPH.

I have never had a tire with a speed rating of 85 MPH. I'll hit 85 MPH +/- on the freeway. Is this a valid concern? I honestly don't know. Thanks

 

Two different tire sizes, but typically size for size the Mickeys are heavier. I've never seen a tire with an 85 MPH speed rating, which is lower than the factory spec'd tire. Perhaps you should double check the spec sheet? I'm seeing a speed rating of Q = 100 MPH for the mickeys with a weight of 65 lbs. I'm also seeing a speed rating of 112 MPH for the Toyos with a weight of 60 lbs.

 

Mickey Thompson Baja boss MT is an amazing tire. I’ve had it for 30k miles now and it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it. Rain, snow , mud , dirt etc. I don’t plan on running another tire. The AT is supposed to be just as good if not better in cold conditions

 

You are correct. On the MT site: A Mickey Thompson produced dot tire without a speed rating has a max highway speed of 85 mph.
I do see on the spec for the tire 121Q. 100 mph. That makes me feel better.

 

And you have the exact wheel I'm looking for in matte black. Are those the RR6-H?
Per RRW, I have to wait for a preorder release for black.

Funny thing about those wheels - every time I've looked at them online, I just don't care for them. I like the spoke design but wasn't sure about the rim detail. But seeing mounted with the Mickeys they look sweet.

 

I was the same until I saw them in person.

 

I first saw the RR6-H on youtube. TRD Jon. He had a 2022 with bronze RR6-H and 35s. Really caught my eye. I found others that I like but I always go back to these. I have a new Limited in Silver. Hence the thread on tires. I am going to go with the MT. I don't think I can go 35s w/o body mods. I will have a Westcott 3/1.

 

Is your wheel 8.5"?
From floor to top of tire how many inches?

Website says 33" for that tire.

My current tire per specs is 33.9 but measures 32.75". Curious what the real measurement is?

For those of you running 8.5" wheel, with MT Baja Boss AT 285/70R17, how tall is the tire from ground?

Current stock tire measures 31.5"
My son's Tundra has 295/70R18 and measures 32.75" (Lost some tread so originally was close to or at 33").

 

Per MT spec on their site, measured on an 8.5" rim the LT 285/70/17 is 33" O.D. x 11.50 at 63 lbs
The P rated version is 32.8" o.d. x 11.6 @ 48 lbs

I have not had the Mickey MT but have had the Toyo MT, RT and now the AT3. AT3 is hands down the best tire by far in snow and ice. That Mickey MT looks like a good tire and you can't go wrong either way.

I have a 33.9" tire per specs but in real world it measures 32.75". Probably closer to 33" if the tire was new. Part of that discrepancy could be what the spec wheel diameter was vs. what is on my truck. But I have a stock wheel with no offset. Or maybe that is normal when the tire is on the vehicle b/c where the tire hits the ground there is some flattening which causes some loss of height. My guess is they don't measure the diameter when on the vehicle.

Just inquiring if my 33" tire will actually measure 32" on the truck. My stock tire is 31.5" so I'm hoping to gain some height over stock.

 

With the wheel raised off the ground or not mounted to the vehicle, you will get closer to factory spec. But once you set the vehicle weight on the tire, it flattens the tread out to grip the road and reduces overall measured height. Else your contact patch would be thin as a razor blade. I’m assuming you are measuring tire height with the tires mounted and truck resting on the ground..

 

No experience with the MTs, but I can say I really like the Toyos. I had the AT2s a while back and liked them a lot having tried several different tires since then. I decided to spring for AT3s on my latest tire purchase. These are 305/70r17s on RR7H wheels. I do think Toyo makes some of the best ATs.

 

Did you notice a buzzing noise with your Toyos? Mine buzzed almost like a kid with a playing card taped next his bike tire tread. Drove me batty. I actually thought the guys at the tire store were punking me for a couple weeks.

 

The gunmetal looks really good on Silver with the black ring. Compared to ATII, any conclusions/feedback on improvement in rain, snow, mud, conditions.

How much poke do have with the 305s. I believe that wheel only has zero offset.

 

No sir, I have not noticed any buzzing with my AT2s or AT3s. It’s one of the reasons I went with them again was due to their low road noise and minimal vibration issues for the tire segment. That’s definitely odd! Maybe there was an issue with your set.

Thank you! Unfortunately I have not yet had these through snow as I got them in the spring. I’ll likely be experiencing some mud with them next week at the hunting camp, but I do not use the truck too heavily off road lately to comment on mud performance. They seem like a more aggressive pattern for mud than the AT2s had though. They have been excellent on wet roads for sure, same as the AT2s. I generally feel very confident in their traction in most situations. They also have great tread wear resistance so far.

 

Pic of your truck helps me visualize the tire size. According to tiresize.com, the 305/70R17 and the the 28575R17 have the same O.D. but the width is 0.8" less on the smaller tire.[/QUOTE]

Yeah, I was going for the slightly wider look. They’re stamped as being a 34”x12”. A photo from the front to get a better visual on the width.

 

I had the MTs and was never able to get them balanced properly. At some point in the process, Discount Tire replaced one of them and it was even worse. In the end they gave up and I switched to a completely differently model. If others aren't having balancing issues, then I suppose its fine. They look amazing and are beefier than other tires of the same size.
